Michigan's top civil rights official has weighed in on the Mt. Pleasant girl who had her hair cut by a school staff member, saying legislation is needed to protect Black and biracial women from discrimination based on hairstyles.
James E. White, director of the Michigan Department of Civil Rights, said his department is gathering information and deciding on what to do next.
"We are deeply concerned about the reported incident in a Mt. Pleasant school involving a 7-year-old child whose hair was cut without her parentâs permission," White said.
"We are in contact with the school administration and the childâs family to ascertain the facts and circumstances that lead to this unfortunate event and to decide on next steps."
