State approves toll rate increases for Seattle's 520 bridge, SR-99 tunnel and Tacoma Narrows Bridge

The Washington State Transportation Commission voted to approve toll increases on Tuesday for the state Route 520 bridge, state Route 99 tunnel and Tacoma Narrows Bridge.
Analysts noted that the increases were largely unpopular during public outreach, but ultimately were necessary given the revenue shortfalls.
"It was across the board basically that those who use the facilities more were less supportive of an increase," said Aaron Halbert, a fiscal analyst for the commission.
For the SR 99 tunnel, the commission approved a 15% uniform increase, raising tolls between 15 and 35 cents depending on the time of day starting this October. Additionally, another 3% toll rate increase will go into effect on July 1, 2022. Drivers with a Good to Go pass currently pay between $1 and $2.25 to use the tunnel based on the time of day.
