Few pianists have had such immediate impact as the brilliant young Icelander Vikingur Olafsson, and this delightful album, alternating between French musical revolutionaries two centuries apart, who each took keyboard playing in new directions. Olafsson says both had relentless intellectual independence, noting Rameau, a “completely obscure autodidact from the provinces”, wrote influential treatises on tonal harmony.
