A concern over an increase in downtown crime kicked off the month of September.
The rate at which the crimes — thefts, vandalism and mischief — were being committed greatly irritated some downtown merchants.

Among them was Bicycle World owner Allan McGimpsey, who said nearly $5,000 worth of bikes had been stolen from his shop. The Beat Central Dance Company, located not too far away, was also the victim of theft. A Lil’ Pole Fitness on the other hand, was targeted on several occasions by vandals that destroyed several windows.
