The first day of 2021 started in Taiwan with fireworks displays across the country, including at the Taipei 101 skyscraper in the north and Kaohsiung's Love River in the south.

An estimated 38,000 people attended the New Year's countdown in Taipei, close to the 40,000 limit set by the city government, while the Kaohsiung celebrations were closed to live audiences and were streamed live.
