EAST COUNTY —
A brush fire that began Saturday evening on the western edge of the Anza-Borrego desert more than doubled in size overnight and had charred an estimated 5,200 acres by Sunday afternoon.
On Sunday, more than 200 firefighters were assigned to the Southern fire, which was 25 percent contained as of just after 2:30 p.m., said Cal Fire spokesman Frank LoCoco. He said Cal Fire deployed 20 engines, eight water carriers and four bulldozers. There were also 10 hand crews working on building containment lines.
