Nickerson School Board's newest members Jay Mitzner and Luke Herren were shocked at overcrowding in South Hutchinson Elementary School. They toured the school in February.
"It was embarrassing when we gave school tours," said Chelsey Mathias, the principal of South Hutchinson Elementary School. "We had offices in closets and a classroom on the stage."
Mitzner, who is in the construction business, went to work trying to find an inexpensive, yet doable solution to the overcrowding at South Hutchinson.
He found new modules could cost the district more than $160,000, so he sought used ones. Within a day or two, he found four used portable modular classrooms and negotiated a price of $70,000 for all four.
