Smart, William D, 1830?-1900
Farmer, goldminer and amateur artist. Born London, he arrived in New Zealand, with his brother John Franklin Smart, at Lyttelton, 1 March 1851. Between 1851 and 1861 he farmed with Mr H Turner, the 'Christchurch run' from the Waimakariri to the Heathcote River. He travelled from Christchurch to the Otago goldfields in 1861 and to the West Coast goldfields in ca 1862/1863. His illustrated diary of his goldmining experiences is held by either Canterbury Museum or the MacMillan Brown collection, University of Canterbury. Returned to Christchurch in 1872. Resided at a cottage called `Grantchester' Christchurch ca 1890s or earlier. Visited Stewart Island, 1890s and drew Canterbury back-country scenes as early as 1862. He married the widow of Joseph Deighton in 1874. He had no children. (Information from obituary, Star, 12 October 1900, page 3).
