A small plane landed on eastbound Loop 202 near Higley Road in Mesa on Tuesday morning, causing brief delays for morning commuters.
The single-engine Piper PA28 took off from Falcon Field Airport in Mesa and landed in the HOV lane shortly after 6 a.m. on Loop 202, according to FAA spokesperson Ian Gregor.
The pilot was forced to make an emergency landing in the eastbound lanes blocking the HOV and Number 1 lanes as the right wing came into contact with the median wall, while the left wing struck a cement truck travelling eastbound, causing minor damage, according to Arizona Department of Public Safety public information officer Bart Graves.
