Short-term rental operators could be facing a fee in Virginia Beach
Stacy Parker, The Virginian-Pilot
Operators of short-term rental properties in Virginia Beach could soon be faced with an annual fee to help the city curb party houses.
City Manager Patrick Duhaney budget proposal for fiscal year 2021-22 includes a proposal for all short-term rental operators to pay $200 each year, which would generate an estimated $450,000 annually in revenue for the operating budget, according to the city.
The money will be used to hire two employees who will keep tabs on issues that arise with rentals during nights and weekends. It will also fund new software for the program and a 24/7 hotline for residents who have complaints about short-term rentals, also known as STR, in their neighborhood.
