[gavel]. President bleiman the next agenda item is number 2, approval of our Meeting Minutes from february 4, 2020, and i will ask if we have a motion to approve the minutes of february 4, 2020. I move to approve. Second. President bleiman is there any Public Comment on our february 4, 2020 minutes . Seeing none, Public Comment is closed. [roll call] president bleiman the next item is a report from our director. Thank you, president bleiman. Commissioners, it feels a little silly because we did have three commissioners in attendance at this event, but just to let you know and everyone out there watching, we are continuing to push forward on this initiative on the commission of entertainment where we take the board of supervisors out to situations where we have permits on our board that we entertain. Its relate to the district and limited to Live Performance spaces that we permit. We had a great time in district 2. Were trying to go to each district in the corresponding months, and so district 2, in february, we went out with supervisor stefani and took her to four different places that we permit, including westwood, which has the only mechanical bull in San Francisco, so that was pretty exciting. I may have ridden it. There isnt going to be anything on social media with that, but it was a good time. And then, we also went to jackson, white rabbit, and then we all went up the street where there was a live jazz trio performing that night. We enjoyed great food, conversation, and wine, and were looking forward to doing this in all of the districts that we havent gone to yet. Next will be in district 4 in april with supervisor mar. Im personally looking forward to that because thats my district. Well have some fun in the outer sunset, and well continue this process. And anybody on the commission whos interested in attending, obviously, just let me and dylan know of your district, whatever district that may be. Just to let you all know, we will have heartier agendas based in the next couple of Commission Meetings based on requests of commissioner thomas and others to have informative agenda items so well have more of those coming up on march 3. Do you have any questions . All right. President bleiman all right. Thank you very much for that report. Is there any Public Comment on the executive directors report . Seeing none, Public Comment is closed. [gavel]. President bleiman the next agenda item is number 4, which is a report from Deputy Director azevedo. Thank you, president bleiman, and good evening, commissioners. We have a fairly short enforcement report this evening. On page 1, youll see that nutrition is highlighted there. This is the locate at 4370 mission street. At our last meeting, it was kind of up in the air about what location was hosting the entertainment. We did send inspectors back out and determine that it is in fact the nutrition shop, the herb herbalife center. Our inspector fiorentino went in and let them know that they were required to have a permit, and i did contact the event managers of evening and let them know that a permit was required, and the City Attorney did contact them and let them know that they had received a complaint. The next is the independent, and every time our inspectors respond, they are being found in compliance. So we went again this past friday and saturday, took measurements, and they are, again, within their sound limit, so just bringing that to your attention. On page 3, arena s. F. , im highlighting this because director weiland issued a citation for exceeding their sound limit last week. We received a 311 complaint. Our inspector found them operating well above their sound limit, both their a and c weighting, so we did issue a sound citation for that, and we did not receive a complaint about them this weekend. Right below there is el trebol, and the reason ive highlighted there is because although they did repair their broken door, theyve been leaving it propped open and while the jukebox is playing. So we went out there two weeks ago. Inspector fiorentino asked them to close the door, and they did, and when he was driving by to go to another venue, he noticed the door open, so he issued a notice of violation. Thats all i have. Happy to answer any questions. President bleiman i did have a question here. I see that there seems to be a number of 311 complaints about the independent that came through. First question is, are those in your to the best of your knowledge, are these from the same complainant . Yes. President bleiman and the i dont want to care about exactly how many times, but it looks like we responded multiple times in the last two weeks, and did we find them out of compliance any of the visits that we went . No, not once. President bleiman okay, well, thats good to hear that they are operating within compliance. All right. Thank you very much for that report. Is there any Public Comment on the Deputy Directors report . Seeing none, Public Comment is closed. [gavel]. President bleiman next agenda item is number 6 am i correct on that . Sorry. Number 5 are we doing sorry. My thing may be a little messed up here. Number 5 is the report from Senior Analyst. Number 5, which is a report from Senior Analyst dylan rice. Good evening, commissioners. Report from Senior Analyst dylan rice. Real quick, efforts to update our permitting applications. Our sound track is now fully digital on the platform. For those of you in the audience that dont know what a sound track is, we issue it on moving vehicles and other types of compliance. Its one of our suites that we do for indoor entertainment and outdoor entertainment. Its now live on our website. It went live on february 3, and its accompanied by the onetime indoor, and the onetime outdoor permits on screen door. And crystal helped me launched it. Thank you so much for that, and weve issued two permits, one for the Chinese New Year parade, and one for a tibetan event, tibetan uprising day. And then, in an event to support builders with education and building networks, we had our last compliant, so we invited some producers and vendors to speak on a panel. So we had several people, a collective of people who promote selfsufficiency and zero waste, and people really got into it. You could also get a certificate of doing the training from environmental department. In terms of turnout, i mentioned we had 60 people, just a sample of people that came from different organizations, sunday streets, undiscovered night market, st. Patricks day, comfort and joy. And whats exciting, too, is we had several brick and mortar venue. Environmental department was really pleased with the collaboration. They said that this event had exposed their work and their mission to a broader audience of entertainment people than previously. So they were really, really pleased. They want to continue collaborating with us. We did survey the group, and some of the highlights from those survey results, we had 70 response rate. Majority of people said they heard about us from facebook or email blast. 76 said this was their first time attending the event. 86 said that they learned something new they could apply to their business, and they said that they would likely recommend the event to another person in the industry, so that was a really nice response. Talking to director weiland before the hearing, and she wanted to give a Bigger Picture in terms of increasing audience. We currently have 21 2,171 subscribers for mailchimp, and we really want to increase that. I think that mailchimp and the facebook hosts are our most popular and most used platforms right now for getting the word out, so we hope to continue that. That is all i have. If you have any questions, let me know. President bleiman i do. Any discussion on the water bottle . Now are street fairs considered water bottle banned because its on the street or is it only on City Property . So yeah, any City Property, so that would include a street or sidewalk as well as a city building, you are not allowed to distribute any plastic water bottle, not even to volunteers or to staff with the exception of athletic events. President bleiman so did anybody at the meetidid so did anyone think of ways that they could do that . They could actually promote bring your own cup to the audiences, and they do their Due Diligence for compliance, they would fulfill that law. Theres different ways you can use it to your advantage. Wthey do that for the beer, but theres always supposed to be water available. Yeah. Theres always supposed to be water available. They can do it through a vendor or utilize it through sfpucs Potable Water fire hydrants. If they can make a case that its very cost prohibitive for them to bring in the water for various reasons, they can have the department bring in the water. So theres stores along the sidewalk, and the Grocery Stores sell plastic bottles, and theyre Walking Around with plastic bottles at the street fair. Thats legal because the point of sale is happening outside the venue. So as long as the vendors isnt involved in selling or distributing bottle waters . Yeah. Its the plastic bottle thats the problem. I see. Thank you. Sure. Whens the next one . We dont know yet. Keep you posted. Were up for suggestions always. Thank you. Thank you. President bleiman before i do Public Comment, i just wanted to say thank you for your work on thursday night. You did a stellar job organizing that bar crawl. I like to see it as you stressed out so we dont have to. Is there any Public Comment on Senior Analysts report . Seeing none, Public Comment is closed. [gavel]. President bleiman the next agenda item is our regular agenda under item number 6, hearing and possible action regarding the applications for permits under the jurisdiction of the entertainment commissioner. And before i ask Deputy Director azevedo, i just wanted to poll the crowd. Can you raise your hand if youre in support of the agenda item, the rite spot. Okay. Does anybody here have concerns for the agenda item . Okay. Nobody appears to be in opposition of the item. You can speak to the item. Its your right, but you can also judge who your leaders are, and we can judge by the out pouring of the crowd. This is your First Amendment right, and we encourage you to do so, but also, you dont have to if you dont feel like it. So now, id like to introduce or have Deputy Director azevedo introduce the applications for the evening. Before i introduce the application, im going to pass around a stack of about 120 letters. They did also receive that in advance. Absolutely, yes. These were all submitted in advance, including up until today, so thats reflective of everything that we received. Okay. The only permit on the regular agenda is for place of Entertainment Permit at the rite spot, located at 2099 folsom street. The rite spot has been providing venues for 30 years, and want to apply for a permit. There was an outpouring of support for this venue. Included are three tenants living above this spot. Additionally, the applicants distributed the letter included in your file to six of their neighbors businesses. There was no neighboring businesses. There was no opposition for this permit, and mission station approved this with no additional conditions. They completed all their inspections, and this is the last thing they need. Here to tell you more is manager, christina. Okay. Hi. Hi. President bleiman hello. So just state your name and tell us about the project. My name is christina hu. I manage the rite spot cafe, and yeah, were looking to get our place of Entertainment Permit so we can continue serving the community and having live entertainment. President bleiman can you just tell us a little bit about what type of entertainment youre going to be having there . Yeah. We host pretty intimate shows of music with, id say genres like blues, americana, folk, jazz, blues, r b. We do tributes once a month. We have comedy, opera every third sunday, so its pretty diverse, the type of entertainment we have, but definitely focused on an intimate space, and so we are a really small bar, yeah. What else should i say . Sorry. President bleiman oh, yeah, and can you tell us the length of time that you have been operating and doing events. Okay. Yeah. So the music usually goes president bleiman for how many years, and then also, wed like to know okay. So my family has owned the bar since 1990, and theyve had music since then, but before they purchased the bar, to my knowledge, they had been operating with music for maybe 15 years prior to that, so i think the mid70s or im just kind of basing this off of stories that people tell me, that theyve come to the rite spot and had music there. So i think that since the mid70s or something. It seems really popular in the 80s, as well, and then, we came to own it in the 90s, so yeah, weve had music for, yeah, pretty much that whole time without the permit. And we just didnt know that we needed one, to be honest, yeah. We also never received complaints. President bleiman got it. Questions . Hello. Thanks for coming in. Thank you. First of all, thank you for bringing such a great number of neighbors to this event. Its a testament to the Community Support for your venue. I have a couple of questions. Next one, do you have any it looks like we have some letters from residents directly above you . Yeah. Do you have any special soundproofing that keeps the sound contained in your venue . I dont believe we have sound proofing because the building is really old. The building itself is i think probably almost 100 years old, so i dont believe that there is. Okay. [inaudible] your neighbors upstairs were in support of you. Yeah. Theyre all fine with it. Most of them have lived there between five to longer. Five to i think one of thems lived there for over ten years, so yeah, theyve never complained, and theyve been happy to live above the bar, and acknowledge the sound, and theyre okay with it. And so have you had any complaints from any neighbors about sound . Yeah no, weve never had any complaints. We share the block with mostly comcast and then businesses, so the area isnt very residential at all. Okay. Thats great. So lets just say in the future if somebody has a complaint about the loud noise or music, what is your policy or procedure to address those in realtime . Definitely, kind of turn it down a bit, and maybe have our windows and doors closed. You have a manager on staff who can pick up the phone when somebody calls or stops by, and they have the ability yeah. We have a p. A. System, and we can control that ourselves. Okay. And the musicians, theyre pretty good, if its loud for us in the bar, we ask them to turn it down, and they do so. A lot of people find your bar such a benefit, and theyre here to support you. So what can you tell us is the secret to your success . So being a benefit to the community and giving a space for them to feel safe to express themselves. Awesome. Thank you so much for coming. Congratulations. Thank you. Real quick on the industry side. How long have you been managing . You took over from your parents . I help manage. They still own the place. Ive been doing this since probably late 2016. So four years. Yeah, i guess almost yeah. Are you there almost every night . Actually, i bar tend i am actually the bartender behind the bar two nights, depending mostly two nights a week, yeah. I come in when needed, but the bar is pretty small, so we usually have the man the bartender working that night. They have the you know, the ability to make decisions. So theyre the onstaff manager, the bartender is the yeah. Onstaff manager . Yeah, i would say so. Okay. And the groups youve had have been often rotating for the past 25 years or whatever . Yeah. I think our longest residency is over 25 years. Do you ever rent out your venue to a buyout situation . We do parties, mostly office parties. Sometimes weddings. And no complaints . No, yeah. So it sounds like, you know, its a great bar, and i guess during Public Comment, i would love to hear from the neighbors exactly, you know, what is your secret because we have very similar places that are were not getting the same kind of response. So i mean, i think its just the people that come. Its just they they together collectively love the space so much, so i think that helps. And i think its a family business, and your family has been there a long time. It does make a difference, im sure. I mean, some of the people have been coming well before my family has owned it, so their loyalty is really to the rite spot, the bar itself. Okay. Thank you. Thank you. I dont have any questions, but i just want to encourage, if we do vote in favor of this, just to see us as partners as well as the best relationships we have with places like yours that have been operating a long time, if there is a situation in the future, if you see our offices as a helpful partner in promoting night life and not the principal in a school thats coming to get you. Yeah. We have things work out really well. I just want to plant that seed in your mind. We regulate the night life and the sound, the other thing is we actually promote it. So were looking for cultural venues and places that offer cultural experiences for the city, and we want to make sure that we continue on both those joint missions. [please stand by] ive been going to the rite spot forever it seems. I used to go to the rite spot and people would ask you what kind of art do you do. Its right near project arteu, a lot of artists, im not an artist, but its a great place to hear music. People complain about what music costs these days, rite spot you go and make a donation to the musicians and its a place where people of all ages can afford to hear music. They have great food. Its just a great spot, the rite spot. They have art shows every month. So its a very welcoming place. I love going there, i love the music, i love the people, and these owners have done a great job in the last 20 years, is it . 20 years. But i went there before that. I met my friends there after the earthquake in 89. Its just a Great Community place to go. So thank you for your support. Thank you. Hi. Im ginger murray, and im one of the bartenders there. So i work at the place. But what i wanted to say about that is its not a place that generates a huge amount of money for anybody concerned. Certainly the band doesnt get paid a lot. However, myself included, and many of the musicians who are really great musicians and get paid well in other places, love to come there, because it is this very special we feel like we can be who we are. We feel we can care for each other, we feel like we can be alive in the space. Wonderful unique and fun way, and thats part of the secret sauce is that everybody feels cared for and respected and welcomed there. And the people who come in there just really love it. And sometimes they keep it a secret from other friends of theirs they dont like so much, because they dont want it to be ruined. But thats the thing is i think its so profound and powerful and has been for so many years that it cant really be ruined because the people who care for it really care for it as do i. And i love working there. Thank you. All right. Seeing no more Public Comment, Public Comment is closed. We can entertain a motion. I move to approve. Ill second. With the staff recommendation . Yes, with the staff recommendation the motion is to approve with staff recommendations. [roll call vote] congratulations, its been approved. [applause] its my understanding that because you took care of all your inspections and everything that you are okay to have entertainment tonight, so if you want to have a celebration, go for it. Try not to be the first night you get that complaint. [laughter] and please follow up with Deputy Director at your earliest convenience. Thank you for coming and congratulations. If you want to take a photo, our Senior Analyst can help with that. I dont know if i had anything extra in there. I think they should take a photo. The final agenda item is number 7, commissioners comments and questions. Commissioners . Comments . Questions . Thanks for the happy hour. That was great. Commissioner. Yeah, it was wonderful. I just want to make a comment about this last agenda item. I think its really powerful to see how a small mom and pop business has been able to turn out over a hundred letters of support and just understand just the process. So kudos to this little photo shoot happening over here. [laughter] i think we are very popular this tuesday night. So, yeah, i just want to say thank you everybody for coming out and for any of our viewers, come to our hearing. [laughter] let us know whats going on. I want to reiterate that. As hard as it is right now for a Small Business to get by in San Francisco, its groups like this that remind us why its so important we cherish them and do everything we can to protect them in the city. I want to reiterate that. Are there any Public Comments on commissioners comments and questions . Seeing none, Public Comment is closed, and ill adjourn this meeting at 6 07 p. M. [please stand by] [please stand by] one more statement. We are the one. That is our first single that we made. That is our opinion. I cant argue with you. You are responsible please do not know his exact. [ ] [ ] [ ] i had a break when i was on a major label for my musical career. I took a seven year break. And then i came back. I worked in the library for a long time. When i started working the San Francisco history centre, i noticed they had the hippie collection. I thought, if they have a hippie collection, they really need to have a punk collection as well. So i talked to the city archivist who is my boss. She was very interested. One of the things that i wanted to get to the library was the avengers collection. This is definitely a valuable poster. Because it is petty bone. It has that weird look because it was framed. It had something acid on it and something not acid framing it. We had to bring all of this stuff that had been piling up in my life here and make sure that the important parts of it got archived. It wasnt a big stretch for them to start collecting in the area of punk. We have a lot of great photos and flyers from that area and that. That i could donate myself. From theyre, i decided, you know, why not pursue other people and other bands and get them to donate as well . The historic moments in San Francisco, punk history, is the sex pistols concert which was at winterland. [ ] it brought all of the punks on the web west coast to San Francisco to see this show. The sex pistols played the east coast and then they play texas and a few places in the south and then they came directly to San Francisco. They skipped l. A. And they skipped most of the media centres. San francisco was really the biggest show for them pick it was their biggest show ever. Their tour manager was interested in managing the adventures, my band. We were asked to open to support the pistols way to that show. And the nuns were also asked to open the show. It was certainly the biggest crowd that we had ever played to. It was kind of terrifying but it did bring people all the way from vancouver, tee seattle, portland, san diego, all up and down the coast, and l. A. , obviously. To San Francisco to see this show. There are a lot of people who say that after they saw this show they thought they would start their own band. It was a great jumping off point for a lot of west coast punk. It was also, the pistols last show. In a way, it was the end of one era of punk and the beginning of a new one. The city of San Francisco didnt necessarily support punk rock. [ ] last, but certainly not least is a jello be opera. They are the punk rock candidate of the lead singer called the dead kennedys. If we are blaming anybody in San Francisco, we will just blame the dead kennedys. There you go. We had situations where concerts were cancelled due to flyers, obscene flyers that the city was thought that he thought was obscene that had been put up. The city of San Francisco has come around to embrace its musicians. When they have the centennial for city hall, they brought in all kinds of local musicians and i got to perform at that. That was, at in a way, and appreciation from the city of San Francisco for the musical legends. I feel like a lot of people in San Francisco dont realize what resources there are at the library. We had a film series, the s. F. Punk film series that i put together. It was nearly sold out every single night. People were so appreciative that someone was bringing this for them. It is free. Everything in the library is free. It it is also a Film Producer who has a film coming out. Maybe in 2018 about crime. What is the title of it . It is called San Francisco first and only rock n roll movie. Crime, 1978. [laughter] when i first went to the Art Institute before the adventures were formed in 77, i was going to be a painter. I did not know i would turn into a punk singer. I got back into painting and i mostly do portraiture and figurative painting. One of the things about this job here is i discovered some great resources for images for my painting. I was looking through these mug shot books that we have here that are from the 1920s. I did a whole series of a mug shot paintings from those books. They are in the San Francisco history centres s. F. Police department records. There are so many Different Things that the library provides for san franciscans that i feel like a lot of people are like, oh, i dont have a library card. Ive never been there. They need to come down and check it out and find out what we have. The people who are hiding stuff in their sellers and wondering what to do with these old photos or old junk, whether it is hippie stuff or punk stuff, or stuffestuff from their grandpar, if they bring it here to us, we can preserve it and archive it and make it available to the public in the future. You. Ic in the future. When i first moved here people come to San Francisco to be the person you want to be can be anyone you want. The community is so rich and diverse that im learning every single day San Francisco is an amazing photoy town historically been base on evolution and that applies to every single professional field including philanthropic arts today what i do is photo based art manifests traditional forest and some colonel lodge and other frames of Digital Forest is a meeting that has been changing like super rapid and the quality is not extended by the medium if you took forest in school or you get a job in a newspaper theyll give give you a list of how to create a philanthropic story my goal to break down that model and from a to b that is unique and allows the ability to incorporate different types of i believey about propels someone through the rise and a fall of their own experiences one of the main things im trying to contribute it unconditional narrative form the narrative art of photograph the in between of photos how does a group of photos come together as how to use the space between photos to alight emotional responses from the audience and bring innovation and create bodies of work that narratively function the way that photos do San Francisco as the commission came out and you visited me and one of their prerestricts was to find an art with enough work to fill a large says that a quad down the hallway downstairs and we hung that quad to feel like a train station that constant sensation from all Different Directions some of the major characteristic of the landscape festivities the blur of the train their 70 Miles Per Hour and theyre not perfect as opposed to to what landscape will look like it creates a dichotomy for people insides the train not just the story of the subject it is not just the visual design the composition juxtapositioning, etc. Not just all autobiography boohoo it creates pictures with meaning within them and then some of the portraits feel awkward some of them feel welcoming and the person that mime making the picture is really comfortable and other ones feel awkward and weigh i didnt and tense that sensation is counter to what we feel like makes a successful portrait that sensation makes that work it is hard to be an artist in a city is 100 percent focused an business the cost of living is expensive and to value your success not scribble on financial return creates a conflict between the paramount egos in San Francisco today. You see a lot of artists leaving for that reason because you need space to make work my ultimate goal to make work that firms people firms this gift and just the experience of life and of their worst and of the amazement the wonderment of everything around us i love teaching. It is such an exhilarating experience when people began to feel their own creativity. This really is a place where all people can come and take a class and fill part of the community. This is very enriching as an artist. A lot of folks take these classes and take their digital imagery and turn it into negatives. There are not many black and white darkrooms available anymore. That is a really big draw. This is a signature piece. This is the bill largest darkroom in the u. S. There are a lot of people that want to get into that dark room. I think it is the heart of this place. You feel it when you come in. The people who just started taking pictures, so this is really an intersection for many generations of photographers and this is a great place to learn because if you need people from different areas and also everyone who works here is working in photography. We get to build the community here. This is different. First of all, this is a great location. It is in a lesspopulated area. Of lot of people come here just so that they can participate in this program. It is a great opportunity for people who have a little bit of photographic experience. The people have a lot, they can really come together and share a love and a passion. We offer everything from traditional black and white darkrooms to learning how to process your first roll of film. We offer classes and workshops in digital camera, digital printing. We offer classes basically in the shooting, ton the town at night, treasure island. There is a way for the programs exploring everyone who would like to spend the day on this program. Hello, my name is jennifer. My name is simone. We are going on a field trip to take pictures up the hill. Cmon, cmon, cmon. Actually, i have been here a lot. I have never looked closely enough to see everything. Now, i get to take pictures. We want to try to get them to be more creative with it. We let them to be free with them but at the same time, we give them a little bit of direction. You can focus in here. That was cool. If you see that . Behind the city, behind the houses, behind those hills. The see any more hills . These kids are wonderful. They get to explore, they get to see Different Things. We let them explore a little bit. They get their best. If their parents ever ask, we can learn they can say that they learned about the depth of field or the rule of thirds or that the shadows can give a good contrast. Some of the things they come up with are fantastic. That is what were trying to encourage. These kids can bring up the creativity and also the love for photography. A lot of people come into my classes and they dont feel like they really are creative and through the process of working and showing them and giving them some tips and ideas. This is kind of the best kept secret. You should come on and take a class. We have orientations on most saturdays. This is a really wonderful location and is the real jewel to the community. Ready to develop your photography skills . The Harvey Milk Photo Center focuses on adult classes. And saturday workshops expose youth and adults to photography classes. Is our United States constitution requires every ten years that america counts every human being in the United States, which is incredibly important for many reasons. Its important for preliminary representation because if Political Representation because if we under count california, we get less representatives in congress. Its important for San Francisco because if we dont have all of the people in our city, if we dont have all of the folks in california, california and San Francisco stand to lose billions of dollars in funding. Its really important to the city of San Francisco that the federal government gets the count right, so weve created count sf to motivate all sf count to motivate all citizens to participate in the census. For the immigrant community, a lot of people arent sure whether they should take part, whether this is something for u. S. Citizens or whether its something for anybody whos in the yUnited States, and it is something for everybody. Census counts the entire population. Weve given out 2 million to over 30 communitybased organizations to help people do the census in the communities where they live and work. Weve also partnered with the Public Libraries here in the city and also the Public Schools to make sure there are informational materials to make sure the folks do the census at those sites, as well, and weve initiated a campaign to motivate the citizens and make sure they participate in census 2020. Because of the language issues that many Chinese Community and families experience, there is a lot of mistrust in the federal government and whether their private information will be kept private and confidential. So its really important that communities like bayviewhunters point participate because in the past, theyve been under counted, so what that means is that funding that should have gone to these communities, it wasnt enough. Were going to help educate people in the tenderloin, the multicultural residents of the tenderloin. You know, any one of our given blocks, theres 35 different languages spoken, so we are the original u. N. Of San Francisco. So its our job is to educate people and be able to familiarize themselves on doing this census. You go online and do the census. Its available in 13 languages, and you dont need anything. Its based on household. You put in your address and answer nine simple questions. How many people are in your household, do you rent, and your information. Your name, your age, your race, your gender. Everybody is 2,000 in funding for our child care, housing, food stamps, and medical care. All of the residents in the city and county of San Francisco need to be counted in census 2020. If youre not counted, then your community is underrepresented and will be underserved. Okay. Somebody said this feels like a wedding, and i think it is good news. My name is bill witte, and on behalf of tndc and united, i welcome you on behalf of avery. And were here today because of years of work and creative policies from mayors and boards of supervisors and ocii and its staff to create a neighborhood, transbay neighborhood, of which this is the largest building that is truly mixed use, mixed income, and i think a model for what can happen elsewhere in San Francisco and frankly in other cities. So this is 548 units total. Its condominiums and rentals, and 150 of those units are permanently affordable. And again, this took political will and commitment and a lot of work by the ocii staff, headed by nadia cesae and her commissioners, several of whom are here today, and it shows public, private, for profit, nonprofit, what it can accomplish. It has world class design, as well, and i want to thank our highrise architect, and lowrise architect. You wont find a better lowrise building in San Francisco, to their credit. Im going to begin by introducing the person who needs no introduction, our mayor. I mean, ive been around a long time in San Francisco, and this mayor, its not possible to be more supportive of housing, Affordable Housing, creative approaches to move the needle and to think outside the box. Again, needs no introduction, but its my pleasure to introduce mayor london breed. [applause] the hon. London breed thank you, bill. Thank you, bill, and thank you to related for your patience in developing this incredible project. I remember when i first serves on the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency commission, and this community, this area was only just a thought. What would happen, what could happen, how do we look at ways to turn it into a new neighborhood . So in 2005, the transbay redevelopment plan was adopted with a goal of really creating what has become an incredible community. And the money that paid for this this property was used to help with transbay terminal, finding creative ways to generate more revenue to invest in this neighborhood was possible as a result of years of hard work. And so here we are, opening 548 new units of desperately needed new housing in San Francisco. This is an amazing accomplishment. [applause]. The hon. London breed but when you think about the fact that this plan was passed in 2005, and its now 2020, and 15 years later, were just now getting to a point where were realizing the benefits of the housing that we so desperately need. And the sad reality is we have to do better. We cant continue to delay important Housing Development in San Francisco, especially ones that have a larger percentage of Affordable Housing tied to those projects than what is required. And this is critical to the future success of our city. We have not build enough housing, and here, we have an opportunity to do more, if only the courage exists with our policy makers to make the hard decisions. So i will continue to fight for a more equitable San Francisco because i cant help but think about every time i show up to cut a ribbon for an Affordable Housing project how happy i am, but also how sad i am that this didnt exist before where people when i was growing up with in this city needed an opportunity to have a safe, affordable place to call home. But now, we have a chance to change that. We have an opportunity to move forward differently than what weve done in the past by making significant policy changes, and those policy changes will be coming sooner rather than later. So i hope youll keep an open mind and open eyes to what is possible because we all know that San Francisco Needs Housing all over the city. We all know that people who have raised their children here cant their children their grow up here. Their children agrgrew up here but now, they cant afford to live here and they have to commute long distances into the city, so thats why its so crucial for our housing stock, and thats why its so critical for those 150 families who are moving in and having the housing and security that they need. This is what we need to be doing on a regular basis in San Francisco, so i am really grateful to bill witte, im greatful to don falk and tndc for their advocacy and outreach and work to help support folks that are part of the Affordable Housing units. Im excited about what this project along with others that will open in this particular community will do for the future of our city, and i cant wait to see people continue to move in. So thank you all so much, and have a wonderful day. [applause] well, thank you, thank you, mayor breed. Those are words we should all live by. So supervisor matt haney just reminded me hes been in office for its either a little less for a little more than a year, although it probably feels like five years. He came into office already a big supporter of Affordable Housing and has continued in that leadership role, you know, working with mayor breed on the homeless issue, on providing Mental Health services to this population. Hes been a huge advocate, and were very happy to welcome him to the avery today. Matt . [applause] supervisor haney thank you. Thank you, bill, and related and everyone that was a part of making this possible. I first just want to acknowledge and thank the residents, cici and regina and all the folks that are welcoming us into your home. This is beautiful. This is my first time being here, and im so proud that this project and this development is here in district 6. This neighborhood is growing fast, maybe faster than any neighborhood in San Francisco, and its growing with a balance of housing. I hear some folks saying yeah, we could use more open space, but were doing this in a way by building a neighborhood that is truly for the residents. And this is an area that mayor breed said, there was not much housing here. There was not much here at all. And now, it is one of the densest residential neighborhoods in San Francisco, and we should be very proud of that. I want to thank mayor breed for her leadership on housing and building more housing. In district 6, we are building thousands and thousands of units of housing, tens of thousands of units of housing in the pipeline, and i agree with mayor breed, we desperately need that housing throughout the city, as well. So as we celebrate this housing, we also know it cant come online fast enough. Some places in the city actually dont have 500 units of housing building in an entire tenyear period, and we have so much here. I also want to recognize and thank you for building so many affordable units here in this building. 150plus affordable units, families, folks like cici, who ive come to know well, are going to be able to call this place home. And we know that our most desperate need for housing is Affordable Housing. Some folks, when they build Affordable Housing, they want to do it offsite, and i think the best way to do that is on side affordable. I want to thank related, and tndc for your part in making this possible. I agree, we need to do these things quicker and more of them, but this is a moment of celebration and appreciation for everybody who made it possible. Thank you. [applause] as we have said, tndc is not only a part of this development, theyre a coowner in those apartments. Do don falk has been executive director for 15 years at tndc. During that time, they built and or renovated over 1500 units, and those numbers are great, but the reason why were so excited to have tndc as a partnership other more projects, as don has told me, its about improving those units, and no one does those Services Better with attention to detail than tndc. So it is with great pleasure i introduce my friend and partner and fort wayne, indianas gift to San Francisco, don falk. [applause] thank you. I am pleased on behalf of tndc to take this opportunity to express gratitude. First and foremost to our partners at related and bill. And people may or may not know this about related. Theyre a forprofit company who is very capable of doing Affordable Housing, 100 Affordable Housing, mixed income, and they invited us into this project i think because they understand that tndc offers some unique capabilities and something in my mind that is singular that arises out of tndcs values and how we approach the work. And so despite the incredible skills that related brings, i mean, ive never been involved in a 55story building before. It has been a true learning experience. Im just really proud of what tndc can offer in our role here. I want to take this chance also to thank our partners. We have so many, i cant even begin to say, but especially ocii, the mayor, the Mayors Office of housing. Your staff has been wonderful for us to work with. And i just want to say the Mayors Office of housing are forever and always a partner in everything that we do. I just want to take a moment to appreciate the people at tndc who made this happen, starting with the Services Staff thatll oversee the services here. Thats Yvette Robinson and deline rankin. [applause] and on the development side, kato aumont, a couple of former tndc staff people, sarah moore and steve white. So thank you to all of you for not only supporting this development but for supporting all of tndcs work. We are truly grateful. [applause] thank you to katie and tndc staff. Were longterm owners, and were going to be working with the staff and everybody. And now, were celebrating the building. Its great design, and theres hopefully going to be very active public space. But the real story is among the 150 residents who will be able to live affordably and hopefully close to where they may work in San Francisco, and ive gotten to talk to cici roberts a little bit, whos going to speak to you now, whos one of our residents, who came through our leaseup process to get a unit. A single mother of two was living on the peninsula, commuting to a job in San Francisco. I cant have to tell you about the cost of housing everywhere in the west bay, certainly. Commuting and all of that, trying to deal with the two kids and now is here. She also has some incredible stories, which just happened organically, which you always hope will happen in a mixedincome community. So please welcome one of our residents, cici roberts. [applause] im so nervous. Good morning. My name is cecelia roberts, and im so honored to be here. I have to take the time to tell my story. As a single mother of two beautiful amazing kids, ive lived and worked in San Francisco for over 20 years, doing work for the community in the nonprofit field, advocating for clients to change their lives and better for lives. However, the Daily Community for me grew a hardship on me traveling 22 miles back and forth to work in San Francisco and provide for my kids. I was looking through my email and seen eligibility for 250 fremont, and it brought tears to my eyes that finally all my hardship work has paid off. I arrived on time for my appointment, playing the song, im so excited, smiling from ear to ear. I was so happy, and my kids were so excited. I first met the related staff, completed all of my paperwork, and after everything was completed, i was told i would receive a letter in the mail. That letter came, and it showed i was denied, and i cried, but i was not going to give up on this big opportunity for me and my kids, so i appealed it, and i sat down with danny, with julie fungroberts by my side, and we talked, and we talked about my credit. With the help of danny along with supervisor matt haney and honey mahogany, i was able to cleanup my credit and submit my application, and in seven months, i was able to sign my lease. And seeing this beautiful place, i cried and cried, and the joy and the tears that it brought to my kids eyes. Danny, and mr. Haney, my eightyearold wanted me to tell you thank you. Shes not late to school no more. And now, she can focus on her arabic language. My son doesnt have to take an hourlong train ride to get here to college, and my job is six minutes away. Since living here, ive met some beautiful people, one being my neighbor, regina allen, the related staff. Just on the corner, i had the pleasure of meeting Golden State Warriors Glen Robertson iii. I cooked him a southern meal, and he rewarded me then and furnished my whole house. [applause] he furnished my whole house, and it made me day, and this i cant read from a paper because i just cooked for him when he came into my house. I had two air beds and three floating chairs, but we were happy to live in this apartment, so it didnt matter to me, and i was ashamed, and i was not embarrassed. He was saying his brother is really big football wise, and he was saying i hope my brother dont break one of these folding chairs. So i cooked for him a good, good southern meal. And october 24, on my birthday, he asked me what i was doing, and i said oh, nothing. He said id like to take you to lunch, and i thought i was going to lunch, and he took me to coit on vanness and furnished every room in the house from head to toe. And he has a charity for his daughter. And i was just so grateful. You can find the video on youtube, but i was just so grateful for what hes done, so thank you. So at the end, i would like to thank i would like to thank danny, thank you, matt haney, and thank you, london breed. Thank you to all the avery staff. Stephanie got the best team. She got the best team. Mario, justin, amber, omar, saeed, armando, and the leasing staff. I want to say thank you for giving me the opportunity to live in a beautiful place like this, me and my kids. Thank you, danny. Thank you. [applause] thank you. And cici was telling me before the program that as a new resident, she sees something that maybe could use improvement, she goes down stairs, she talks to the staff, they interact. Thats how this is supposed to work, and its working. Can we do better . Yes, and we will, we will because we have residents like cici who will help us do that. So now, i want to acknowledge all the people who helped make this happen, who designed it, planned it, funded it. This is a 600 million project. Even today, thats a big number, but i want to start with ocii, with nadia and her staff. And they presided, as they did at mission bay, over the two major mixedincome neighborhoods in San Francisco. And without their participation, including financial and the Affordable Housing, this wouldnt happen, so thats nadia and sally hirth, her deputy. Shane and brandon, the project Management Team who we still continue to work with. Jeff and elizabeth from the housing department, and our old colleague, jim morales, whos general counsel. Tndc, don mentioned katey lamont, whos one of the Top Developers in the management sector in the city. And this is basically a complement. We have vertical condominiums above mixed income and Affordable Rentals all sort of coming together. There was Construction Financing from bank of china, wells fargo bank, and citigroup. Citigroup i think also bought the tax credits which helped pay for the Affordable Housing. On the design side, i mentioned o. M. A. And fougeron, and the architects of record who did the actual drawings. I mentioned webcor drawings. Jeff peterson is here. Again, this is a major building, not a simple project. And then last, but not least, our team at related. And often times, i leave the project manager to the end but Jonathan Schumm was with me when i responded to the ocii. Theyre still involved in leasing up the retail space, all of the financing, closing it all out. One of the most complicated deals weve ever worked on, so jonathan, thank you for all of that. [applause] and as our architects and contractors will tell you, were very active clients. Were almost like partners. And on the design side, phoebe yee and her team worked with o. M. A. And fougeron on every detail of this project, laying out the units. If you get a chance, walkthrough the common areas because i dont think youll see nicer interior design than we have here. Thats a function of phoebe and her team. On the construction side, we we actually take cost risk in working with webcor, so very, very active. Our head of construction who refuses to show up at these events, jeff lucas, but his team helped build this with jeff and his team at webcor. And then ballin simszyk also deserves a lot of credit here. Id also acknowledge a former colleague of ours, greg bilkin. Also had a large role in helping this happen. And finally, jennifer lee and jill blumberg for organizing todays event, so thank you. I always like to finish these by saying we are longterm owners. We typically keep and own everything that we build, so were going to keep it. Were going to be neighbors in this community, working with people like mr. Robertson and kineta johnson from the citizens advisory group, who is now, i think, Business Improvement district. Also been very active, mayor and supervisor mentioned the community. Very involved in this, well continue to be, so well be your neighbors for a long time, and i think weve done okay. We can and will do better. We look forward to your input, meeting with you, and continuing to improve the neighborhood. I think we will have some tours available for people who are interested. Oh, ive neglected to involve our marketing team. You dont sell 118 condominiums and lease 350 rentals without a very active team, and from our end, we have kalee pickett and others who are still very involved. So this is hopefully a model for the city. Thank you all for coming. [applause] this neighborhood was lived for approximately 22 years. Yeah, like 21 years. 21 years in this neighborhood. In the same house. We moved into this neighborhood six months after we got married, actually. Just about our whole entire married life has been here in excel. The owner came to the house and we wanted to sell the house and we were like, what . We were scared at first. What are we going to do . Where are we going to move into . The kids school . Our jobs . My name is maria. Im a preschool teacher for the San Francisco unified school district. My name is ronnie and i work in San Francisco and im a driver from a local electrical company. We went through meta first and meta helped us to apply and be ready to get the down payment assistant loan program. Thats the program that we used to secure the purchase of our home. It took us a year to get our credit ready to get ready to apply for the loan. The whole year we had to wait and wait through the process and then when we got the notice, its like, we were like thinking that. When we found out that we were settling down and we were going to get approved and we were going to go forward, it was just a really we felt like we could breathe. We have four kids and so to find a place even just to rent for a family of six. And two dogs. We were going to actually pay more for rent and to own a house. It feels good now to have to move. It feels for our children to stay in the neighborhood that they have grown in. They grew up here and they were born here. They know this neighborhood. They dont know anything outside San Francisco. We really have it. Wed love to say thank you to the Mayors Office. They opened a door that we thought was not possible to be opened for us. They allowed us to continue to live here. Were raising our family in San Francisco and just to be able to continue to be here is the great lesson. After my fire in my apartment and losing everything, the red cross gave us a list of agencies in the city to reach out to and i signed up for the belowmarket rate program. I got my certificate and started applying and won the housing lottery. [ ] the current Lottery Program began in 2016. But there have been lot rows that have happened for Affordable Housing in the city for much longer than that. It was there was no standard practice. For nonprofit organizations that were providing Affordable Housing with low in the city, they all did their lotteries on their own. Private developers that include in their buildings affordable units, those are the city weve been monitoring for some time since 1992. We did it with Something Like this. Where people were given circus tickets. We game into 291st century in 2016 and started doing electronic lotteries. At the same time, we started electronic applications systems. Called dalia. The lottery is completely free. You can apply two ways. You can submit a paper application, which you can download from the listing itself. If you a plo apply online, it wl take five minutes. You can make it easier creating an account. To get to dalia, you log on to housing. Sfgov. Org. I have lived in San Francisco for almost 42 years. I was born here in the hayes valley. I applied for the San Francisco Affordable Housing lottery three times. Since 2016, weve had about 265 electronic lotteries and almost 2,000 people have got their home through the lottery system. If you go into the listing, you can actually just press lottery results and you put in your lottery number and it will tell you exactly how you ranked. For some people, signing up for it was going to be a challenge. There is a Digital Divide here and especially when you are trying to help low and very low income people. So we began providing digital assistance for folks to go in and get help. Along with the income and the residency requirements, we also required someone who is trying to buy the home to be a first time home buyer and theres also an educational component that consists of an orientation that they need to attend, a firsttime home buyer workshop and a oneonone counseling session with the housing councilor. Sometimes we have to go through 10 applicants before they shouldnt be discouraged if they have a low lottery number. They still might get a value for an available, Affordable Housing unit. We have a variety of Lottery Programs. The four that you will most often see are what we call c. O. P. , the certificate of Preference Program, the dthp which is the displaced penance Housing Preference program. The neighborhood resident Housing Program and the live worth preference. I moved in my new home february 25th and 2019. The neighborhood Preference Program really helped me achieve that goal and that dream was with eventually wind up staying in San Francisco. The next steps, after finding out how well you did in the lottery and especially if you ranked really well you will be contacted by the leasing agent. You have to submit those document and income and asset qualify and you have to pass the credit and rental screening and the background and when you qualify for the unit, you can chose the unit and hopefully sign that lease. All city sponsored Affordable Housing comes through the system and has an electronic lottery. Every week theres a listing on dalia. Something that people can apply for. Its a bit hard to predict how long it will take for someone to be able to move into a unit. Lets say the lottery has happened. Several factors go into that and mainly how many units are in the project, right. And how well you ranked and what preference bucket you were in. This particular building was brand new and really this is the one that i wanted out of everything i applied for. In my mind, i was like how am i going to win this . I did and when you get that notice that you won, its like at first, its surreal and you dont believe it and it sinks in, yeah, it happened. Some of our buildings are pretty spectacular. They have key less entry now. They have a court yard where they play movies during the weekends, they have another master kitchen and space where people can throw parties. Mayor breed has a plan for over 10,000 new units between now and 2025. We will Start Construction on about 2,000 new units just in 2020. We also have a very big portfolio like over 25,000 units across the city. And life happens to people. People move. So we have a very large number of rerentals and resales of units every year. Best thing about working for the Affordable Housing program is that we know that were making a difference and we actually see that difference on a daytoday basis. Being back in the neighborhood i grew up in, its a wonderful experience. Its a long process to get through. Well worth it when you get to the other side. I could not be happier. [ ] thank you very much for coming. Im going to let some people filter in here while i talk. My name is joanne im a reporter and anchor at abc 7news. Ill going to be your emcee today for this unveiling of this beautiful refurbished court and i know a little later on well have fun on it. So i just want to start off here we are at onetime sports. If you havent been here, this is a newly Baseball Court where the first time weve laid eyes on it, step on it. Its a great feeling. We want to thank the Warriors Community foundation for doing this and being here and making this all happen. [applause] also, for pepsi as well. [applause] and also creative Sports Concepts. Thank you, very much. [applause] so just to learn a little bit about what were on, what all is here today, the renovation work included a resurfacing of the entire court. Also the new booths and the back boards as well. And redesigned banner. We also have if you see this right here which i know the mayor is excited about. These solar powered lights that are going to be working here, which is really great for a really energyefficient city so this is a step in the right direction. Also here, the sport define features of course some key elements representing the warriors here. We have this Hometown Spirit in San Francisco. This renovation project was made possible by pepsi and creative Sports Concept and its positively impacting the community and were going to see it play out for us today. And recognizing mike taylor, you can raise their hand please. With creative sports, thank you, mike. To let you know that mike is the director of Global Operations and his amazing team and we want to thank them for this Beautiful Court and all the improvements you see here today. I also would like to acknowledge here, mike kits, your Senior Vice President partners. Raise your hand, please. Thank you, mike. [applause] and also yoyo chan. Warriors Vice President of public affairs. First up on our speakers list, please give a warm welcome to mayor london breed. Hello, everyone. You know, im really excited to be here today. Earlier today, we were at rosa parks. Many of you know rosa parks and the pink pallet down the street on connects and westbound ser and we celebrated the rehabilitation of over 200 units there just like we celebrated the units that were rehabilitated here at west side court last year in february. When we talked about rad and rehabilitation because of the many Public Housing units in San Francisco were being neglected and they were in need of refurbishing. No one wanted to do hardly anything and when i became supervisor, we were able to make this happen and but over 3600 Public Housing units throughout San Francisco has been refurbished. Its not good enough. This court, work had not been completely up to par. The nets were not up. The back board did not look like this. And we had so many kids who wanted to play on this court and we had kids who wanted to play when it got dark early. And so, at that time, we made a commitment to do something about it and today, were fulfilling that commitment faster than what i would have thought possible and clearly, you know, with the city and the challenge and trying to get things done in timely manner, the warriors foundation, the Community Foundation stepped in and said we would do it. Theyve done more than a dozen court refurbishing through out San Francisco because they know its important to have these fun, recreational spaces that are the places that create tomorrows steph currie steph cl the other nba players we love. We want to make sure west side court has the Community Resources they deserve. This rehab has been absolutely incredible and im so glad to see so many of the residents out here today. We also know that there are a lot of young people here who want to play and theyre also a lot of our elders who want to play as well. This space will do just that in bringing the Community Together. So im looking forward to the first tipoff. I see everyone has their jerseys on and the basketballs are all over the place. We are hoping that today is just the beginning of an opportunity for so many people to use this space to just develop their memories, have fun, enjoy one another, make that Community Connection and then who knows, maybe one of these kids might end up playing for the Golden State Warriors, you never know. [applause] thank you all so much for being here today and lets play. [applause] thank you so much mayor breed. The wind everyone, who knew. So next up we have here on our speaker listed dr. James mccrae from west side courts housing partnerships llp and he will say a few words for us. [applause] you got it, mayor. My brothers and sisters. I want to thank the city and county of San Francisco, the San Francisco housing authority, related and all of the many others who have opened this possibility up not only for participating as a owner and developer but also from all of the communities to experience the joy of having attention paid to you. The joy of having attention paid to you. We have a simple theme in tabernacle, its seek the welfare of the city for in its welfare you will find your welfare. It is this theme that is driven us over these now nearly 22 years to be involved in seeking the welfare of other communities cities and county of San Francisco from its top to its bottom. This moment is just the further indication that if we join together in seeking one anothers welfare, great things can happen and joy can be experienced. We can come together and feel good about what we have done and said rather than feel disappointment and shame. Thank you, everyone for being out this afternoon. For being a part of this opportunity to say we all matter because were all going to Pay Attention to one another. Thank you. [applause] next up i want to bring supervisor dean preston to the front. From district 5 here. Speak a little bit more about the impacts of this court. Thank you so much. Im going to move over here so im not looking right into the sun. Its really an honor to be here on this Beautiful Day with all of you and to celebrate this new court here in this community. Also, its an honor to be here with the mayor with our former supervisor vallie brown. We have two prior supervisors and the current so three in total here today, which i think signifies the importance of this investment in the community. As we all know too well, in district and an area of the city that has suffered from really decades of dis investment led by the assault at the National Level on our communitys particularly the African American communities in San Francisco and beyond and it is hardening when we see some of that being reversed through investments like the comments investments in the community and refurbishment of housing here and the refurbishment of this court which is so important as a place for recreation, athletics and as a Community Space to really build community that is absolutely essential particularly at this time so im looking forward to the tip off and to getting to know and i know some of you are looking forward to get to know those of you who i havent met before, i just took office a month ago and its just thrilling to be here as part of our celebration so thank you both to the mayor and our former supervisor and the warriors and to accept se pepsid aquafina. Pepsi values its partnership with the warriors and the Community Foundation which is why i would now like to bring up sean king, Vice President general manager West Division from pepsi co. Thank you, everybody. I think im going to try to move over a little bit myself to get away from the sun. First let me say, i am just absolutely incredibly honored and proud to be here today with the warriors, the local community, and of course most importantly the children that are going to be able to be playing on these brand new courts. Pepsi is proud to be a partner of the Golden State Warriors and it is incredibly humbling to be partnered with such a Great Organization that allows us to do events like this and have such a deep impact on the community. This is the fourth refurbishment we partnered in with the warriors and its part of a larger beautification effort across the bay area led by our brands life water and aquafina. Pepsi has deep roots in california. We have been in this state for over 84 years and have hundreds of employees that work within the bay. This is our community. We work, we live, and we are proud to represent the bay. Projects like this mean so incredibly much to our teams and our people and to this community. Which again, its something that all of us are a much bigger part of and wore so honored and excited to be here with this group. I also think its important to recognize the importance of Affordable Housing. West side courts offer San Francisco residents a chance to improve their quality of life with affordable accommodations and we are honored to help boost their Community Ties with this new basketball court. So again, o mayor breed, the community, the warriors, thank you for this incredible partnership and im very much looking forward to tip off. Thank you. Thank you, we are almost there to our exciting tip off. But first, i want to bring up brandon schneider, warrior chief revenue officer to say a few words for us. Thank you, very much. It is a very exciting day to be here at west side courts. Staring into the sun. As you can tell, we plan today specifically around the trade dead lines. Im sure everybody saw the moves bob myers and team made today. The good news is they spared me, i didnt get traded. Maybe that was just so i could spend the time here at todays events and maybe in the future, we will make sure to plan this after the trade deadline. Thank you to the city of San Francisco and all the residents of west side courts for letting us spend the afternoon with you. And a huge thank you to pepsi for your suppose sort and making this court possible for the community. I also like to specifically thank San Francisco mayor london breed, who we obviously just heard from and her team for their on going Community Impact efforts. This court is another example of her leadership in guidance to include all San Francisco residents access to Community Resources. I would also like to thank and acknowledge supervisor preston for his advocacy and representation of our city and district 5 residents. We look forward to partnering with you. So our goal with the warriors is to compete for championships every year. If joe was here he may not agree with me and the last five years, may tell a different story. Were probably not going to win the championship every year. This year may be an example of that. Well be back next year. I like that. But joes wife, nicole, was a big part of launching the Warriors Community foundation in 2012 and thats to ensure we can be championships in the Community Every year. Our Community Foundation granted over 12 million since 2012 to ensure Educational Equity in both San Francisco and alameda counties and one of the other things were focus on is doing Court Refurbishments threw out the bay area. Today is a huge milestone for us. As its actually our 85th Court Refurbishment weve done here in the bay area. They tell me its 380,000 square feet of playing surface weve done. I wanted to recognize again, lets have another round of applause for mike and his team from creative sports for awful their incredible work on the court tonight. [applause] so playing sports provides such an amazing opportunity for youth and Community Members to create positive change in their community and to build selfconfidence. This court will be an incredible center piece for the west side courts Residential Community and we hope that it instills confidence to those that use and and for you kids here today, we hope you will really take advantage of these new courts. You can truly be anything you want to be. Who knows, maybe one of you will be the mayor of San Francisco one day. [laughter] you stole my line. My other line was maybe one of you will follow in the footsteps of the next speaker who did play in the nba. So you guys may have noticed this tall guy standing over here, i dont know if this podium is going to work for him. The eighth over all pick in the 1997 nba draft Golden State Warriors drafted him. He played for us for 11 years, 1997 to 2007. He actually graduated in 1999 from Colgate University magna kum lad a means he is smart with a history degree. He is founded an Organization Called democracy matters to help deepen democracy and train youth how to run effective grassroots movements. His accomplished career includes his induction to the world sports humanitarian hall of fame first commitment to the community. Its my honor to welcome to the stage this is so awesome. Are you guys ready to hoop over there that doesnt sound con for instancing are you ready to hoop thats much better. I was dropped b drafted by the n 1997 and im still a part of this organization is their undying commitment to our community. As an organization and athletes, we believe that we have a morale imperative to help make our community better. And i think that from the organization from the top to bottom, all of our players embodies that philosophy. For me its a bit more personal. I think that sports is one of those things that give you amazing opportunities to do whatever you want to do. For me, its been about being the first person in my family to go to college. I got an athletic scholarship coming from an island of 500 people. What you guys have is a unique opportunity to learn some of the values that sports presents. Commitment, being selfmotivated, really the desire to compete at the highest level and still be great teammates. Those values are life values. But the thing that i want to leave you guys with before we play some basketball is a few things. One, you dont always have to be an athlete. You can be an incredible student. So the time you just need the opportunity to get into the dough. When i came from the island being the first person in my family to go to college, i played basketball very hard but i also understood that i have an opportunity to become exceptional with my mind as well as my physical body. You guys have that as well. The other thing is, along the way, there would be a lot of people who tell you you cant do things because of where you come from. Dont ever believe them. Theres everything you have within you guys to be incredible, to be great, to be exceptional. Just continue to believe that truth. This court is an opportunity for us to pull our Community Together but more than that, its to mirror values that i believe have been the corner stone of my life. A commitment t to a higher purpe than ourselves. So today, lets get some hoops going lets play i thank everybody for coming. You guys are truly incredible and i thank this community for allowing us to be part of it. Thank you guys so very much. [applause] thank you so much i want to say on behalf of the Warriors Community foundation, a big thank you to pepsi and also aquafina, San Francisco the community and everything here as well as the bay area. Also thank you to the Warriors Community and foundation and creative Sports Concepts for refurbishing this Beautiful Court that we are all on right now and most importantly thank you all for being here today so kids, are you ready to play baseballbasketball come on inside im going to ask the adults to make your way to the sidelines. We can get these athletes out here when he throws it up jump up and hands on 3, 2, 1 [ ] i just wanted to say a few words. One is to the parents and to all of the kids. Thank you for supporting this program and for trusting us to create a Soccer Program in the bayview. Soccer is the worlds game, and everybody plays, but in the United States, this is a sport that struggles with access for certain communities. I coached basketball in a coached football for years, it is the same thing. It is about motivating kids and keeping them together, and giving them new opportunities. When the kids came out, they had no idea really what the game was. Only one or two of them had played soccer before. We gave the kids very simple lessons every day and made sure that they had fun while they were doing it, and you really could see them evolve into a team over the course of the season. I think this is a great opportunity to be part of the community and be part of programs like this. I get to run around with my other teammates and pass the ball. This is new to me. Ive always played basketball or football. I am adjusting to be a soccer mom. The bayview is like my favorite team. Even though we lose it is still fine. Right on. I have lots of favorite memories, but i think one of them is just watching the kids enjoy themselves. My favorite memory was just having fun and playing. Bayview united will be in soccer camp all summer long. They are going to be at civic centre for two different weeklong sessions with america scores, then they will will have their own soccer camp later in the summer right here, and then they will be back on the pitch next fall. Now we know a little bit more about soccer, we are learning more, and the kids are really enjoying the program. We want to be united in the bayview. That is why this was appropriate this guy is the limit. The kids are already athletic, you know, they just need to learn the game. We have some potential collegebound kids, definitely. Today was the last practice of the season, and the sweetest moment was coming out here while , you know, we were setting up the barbecue and folding their uniforms, and looking out onto the field, and seven or eight of the kids were playing. This year we have first and second grade. We are going to expand to third, forth, and fifth grade next year bring them out and if you have middle school kids, we are starting a team for middle school. You know why . Why . Because we are . Bayview united. Thats right. It did take a village. I was really lucky when i was 14 years old to get an internship. The difference that it made for me is i had a job, but there were other people who didnt have a job, who, unfortunately, needed money. And they were shown to commit illegal acts to get money. That is what i want to prevent. [ ] today we are here to officially kick off the first class of opportunities for all. [applause]. Opportunities for all is a program that mayor breed launched in october of 2018. It really was a vision of mayor breed to get to all of the young people in San Francisco, but with an intention to focus on young people that have typically not being able to access opportunities such as internships or workbased learning opportunities. Money should never be a barrier to your ability to succeed in life and that is what this program is about. Theres always these conversations about young people not being prepared and not having experience for work and if they dont get an opportunity to work, then they cannot gain the experience that they need. This is really about investing in the future talent pool and getting them the experience that they need. It is good for everyone because down the road we will need future mechanics, future pilots, future bankers, future whatever they may be in any industry. This is the pipe on we need to work with. We need to start developing talent, getting people excited about careers, opening up those pathways and frankly giving opportunities out there that would normally not be presented. [ ] the way that it is organized is there are different points of entry and different ways of engagement for the young person and potential employers. Young people can work in cohorts or in groups and thats really for people that have maybe never had job experience or who are still trying to figure out what they want to do and they can explore. And in the same way, it is open for employers to say, you know what, i dont think we are ready to host an intern yearround are all summer, but that they can open up their doors and do site visits or tours or panels or conversations. And then it runs all the way up to the opportunity for young people to have longterm employment, and work on a project and be part of the employee base. Something new, to get new experience and meet people and then you are getting paid for it you are getting paid for doing that. It is really cool. I starting next week, i will be a freshman. [cheers and applause] two of the things i appreciate about this program was the amazing mentorship in the job experience that i had. I am grateful for this opportunity. Thank you. Something i learned at airbnb is how to network and how important it is to network because it is not only what you know, but also who you know to get far in life. During this program, i learned basic coding languages, had a had to identify the main components and how to network on a corporate level. It is also helping me accumulate my skills all be going towards my College Tuition where i will pursue a major in computer science. For myself, being that i am an actual residential realtor, it was great. If anybody wants to buy a house, let me know. Whenever. [applause] it is good. I got you. It was really cool to see the commercial side and think about the process of developing property and Different Things that i can explore. Opportunities for all was a great opportunity for all. We were aiming to have 1,000 young people register and we had over 2,000 people register and we were able to place about between 50 and did. We are still getting the final numbers of that. Over several weeks, we were able to have students participate in Investment Banking they were able to work with our team, or technology team, our engineering 20 we also gave them lessons around the industry, around financial literacy. There are 32,000 young people ages 16 and 24 living in San Francisco. And imagine if we can create an opera skin it just opportunity for all program for every young person that lives in Public Housing, Affordable Housing, low income communities. It is all up to you to make that happen. We have had really great response from employers and they have been talking about it with other employers, so we have had a lot of interest for next year to have people sign on. We are starting to figure out how to stay connected to those young people and to get prepared to make sure we can get all 2400 or so that registered. We want to give them placement and what it looks like if they get more. Lets be honest, there is always a shortage of good talent in any industry, and so this is a real great career path. For potential sponsors who might be interested in supporting opportunities for all , there is an opportunity to make a difference in our city. This is a really thriving, booming economy, but not for everyone. This is a way to make sure that everyone gets to benefit from the great place that San Francisco is and that we are building pathways for folks to be able to stay here and that they feel like they will belong. Just do it. Sign up for it. [ ] [ ] citybe. The hon. London breed well, welcome, everybody. My names london breed, and i am the mayor. Werent we here just last year, celebrating the victory . First of all, i was at turkey day, and i didnt necessarily sit on lincolns side to pick sides, i sat on lincolns side somehow. I dont know how that ended up happening, but i think that i was your good luck charm oh, i was with you. Many of you know i mean to galileo high school, and i am a big fan of our high schools and a big supporter and a fan of making sure we continue to uplift young people when theyre doing something great not just as athletes, but we know you also have to keep your grade point up in order to play football in the first place. So to balance that at turkey day, and emerge for the second year in a row as state champions is absolutely an incredible accomplishment. When you came here last year, i was really excited, but this year, im even more excited because ive got a special surprise for all of you. Usually, when you win the super bowl, what do you get when you win the super bowl . Exactly. Were going to make sure that each and every player gets a Championship Ring this year. [applause] the hon. London breed so you get to design them yourself and figure out what you want on them. Its going to take a few weeks for them to get ordered and set up, but we are committed to supporting your Championship Ring so you can wear your rings with pride. And im really excited that you all are here today because we want to make sure that we honor you. And coach, come on up. [applause] the hon. London breed come on up. Thank you. The hon. London breed i just feel like i was your good luck charm because i did the coin toss and all that. It was a great day, and it was so fun. I would like to say, kerry bader, he said no mayor has been out to flip the turkey coin. So i hope we can make it a tradition and youll be out when you get the chance. The hon. London breed but i think its really important. Its important that we support young people that are staying focused and positive, and the fact that this team has come together as a team and accomplished something so amazing under your leadership is really its a testament to what you do. Because i know they hear from you every day, they hear from their parents, telling them the same stuff every year, to focus and to put on your gear. You know, i was like a lot of young people here, and i would tune it out and tune it out. But today is a great opportunity to let you know that your city supports you, that your city stands behind you, and we wanted to do something really special to make it clear we are proud of each and every one of you for putting in the hard work and getting to this point. And so today is about all of the young mustangs that really put San Francisco on the map in a whole nother way. So thank you for this, coach, for this incredible opportunity, and we are looking forward to you designating whoever you want to coordinate the ordering of the rings and how you pick out what you buy. So you can have your school and your year. You know what we do. Well do that. The hon. London breed congratulations. Thats awesome. [applause] thank you so much. Its a great gift. Its totally unbelievable, and i really appreciate that. But we have something for you. The hon. London breed for me . So basically, you know you went to galileo, so we have to make sure youre representing us when you walkthrough the city. The hon. London breed oh, you guys are so lucky. We didnt have this kind of stuff growing up. Just a couple couple things just about this here. It shows the legacy of what we have here. The hon. London breed oh, wow. This is called dedication, discipline, and desire, and weve been running the program for 19 years since ive been here. You have the dedication to run something every day, you have t the dedication to run a program, the discipline to run it every day, and the desire to be a champion. The hon. London breed wow. Thats a lot of years. And so many travels that you go through, this was unreal. Just kind of a Different Team than the year before. I tell everybody last years team was a ferrari. You could do anything with it. This years team was a buick. We had to run it out. Its amazing we did this, and its amazing for them because they bought into what we were selling. The best thing is when we went up to mariposa, its the championship. None of on us kids have been none of our kids have been out of San Francisco. Whats that smell . Well, thats cow smell. We rented a room to sit in before the game. And we went to this game. And here we are, asian, African American, white. Different group against a predominantly white culture. And everyone was thinking we would be the ones who broke down, we would be the ones who pointed fingers at each other. We would be the ones who screwed it up. And you would be proud of us, mayor. We didnt screw it up. Unbelievable. People there, unbelievable. What we did just awe stirring for me. Its just amazing to see the guys pull together and be like that and represent your city so well. So that was amazing, and for that, were going to give you the state championship hat because the norcal championship, we had to win that to get this. The hon. London breed thank you. When youre Walking Around, make sure you represent that. The hon. London breed whats that on your finger . Thats last years. Thats last years. The hon. London breed look at that. Undefeated. Well, this year, im getting the ring. Hold on. Right on. Well get that. The hon. London breed thank you. And the last thing i want to say is, you know, soak up this mome moment. Enjoy every single minute. Youre going to look back at this time and realize this was one of the best moments of your life. I know theres some folks from lincoln, so raise your hand if youre a lincoln alumni. They wish they were the age you are right now, in their seats right now. Coach, you want to introduce your players . Im here to enjoy. Thank you. We have one young man to speak for us. Its an interesting story. Simani came to us from another school his junior year, reardon. He went through a lot of stuff to get on the field. It was unreal, and his parents are great people. So timani, its your turn. I was just trying to say thank you to all the parents and all the alumni and all the coaches and, you know, making this year great, and helping us restate again and helping us and having our back this whole year. Most importantly, my teammates because we did it again, especially the last year, all the seniors this year. We had all the odds against us. We werent projected to win like we were supposed to, and we had a lot of people, you know, going against us and saying that we wouldnt make it, and we proved them wrong. So at this time, for our first group of eight players, brian pinto. [applause] jonas francovich. Luis quinteros. Tyree cross. [applause] eduardo garcia. [applause] xavier abrams. [applause] jack lau. [applause] and at this time, ill take a photo. Our next group of players is john tursano. Thank you. [applaus [applause] diego ramirez. [applause] jeffrey franco. [applause] andres montano. [applause] tony crossland. [applause] all right. Take our next group of photos right now. Next group of students, dean batar. [applause] nicholas walker. [applause] darren erfrey. [applause] michael leon. [applause] tamani morris. [applause] alex mchugh. Alex . [applause] our final group of student athletes, philip acuna. [applause] alexis velasquez. [applause] jonathan chow. [applause] sicoti manunua. [applause] leonardo gallegos. Mikha. [applause] mikhail hicks. [applause] and james wish. [applause] so were going to present certificates to the managers and coaches, and once we do the presentation of certificates, well take one big group photo here. I think well do it near the steps. All right. Here we go. To the managers, cassandra matana. [applause] crystal pimentel. [applause] sharina gutierrez. [applause] and elise hammond. [applause] and reilly zuleta wong. [applause] thank you, managers. And last but not least, our coaches. Coach pereno, of course. [applause] coach andre walker thomas. [applause] coach greg wood. [applause] coach edison zau. [applause] sheri bader. [applause] and coach mark walker. [applause] and again, id like to invite principal sherry bellisi to come up for a photo. The hon. London breed again, thank you to all the players, the coaches, the managers, the principal, the teachers, the alumni, the parents, the friends, the family. Congratulations again, and i think what were going to do at this time, since that concludes our program, were going to go probably take a go down to the rotunda at the beginning of the stairs and take a picture. In the meantime, stay focused on your grades. Make sure you dont give your teachers and parents a hart time this year. Walk around like champions because you are champions, and make sure that Everybody Knows it when you step in the room. Thank you, and congratulations. My name is dave, and i play defense. My name is mustafa, and i am a midfielder, but right now, i am trying to play as a goalkeeper, because they need a goalkeeper. Soccer u. S. A. Is a nonprofessional organization. We use sports, soccer in particular to engage communities that can benefit from quality programs in order to lift people up, helping to regain a sense of control in ones life. The San Francisco recreation and Park Department and street soccer u. S. A. Have been partners now for nearly a decade. Street soccer shares our mission in using sport as a vehicle for Youth Development and for reaching people of all ages. Rec and park has a team. Im been playing soccer all my life. Soccer is my life. I played in the streets when i was a kid. And i loved soccer back home. I joined street soccer here. It was the best club to join. It helps me out. The tenderloin soccer club started in the summer of 2016. We put one of our mini soccer pitches in one of our facilities there. The kids who kpriez the club team came out to utilize that space, and it was beautiful because they used it as an opportunity to express themselves in a place where they were free to do so, and it was a safe space, in a neighborhood that really isnt the most hospitalable to youth hospitable to youth playing in the streets. One day, i saw the coach and my friends because they went there to join the team before me. So i went up to the coach and asked, and they said oh, ive got a soccer team, and i joined, and they said yeah, it was he for everybody, and i joined, and it was the best experience ever. A lot of our programs, the kids are in the process of achieving citizenship. Its a pretty lengthy process. Here, i am the only one with my dad. We were in the Housing Program, and we are trying to find housing. My sister, shes in my country, so i realize that i have a lot of opportunities here for getting good education to help her, you know . Yeah. Thats the one of the most important things that challenge me. My dad was over here, making some money because there was not a lot of jobs back home. I came here, finish elementary in San Francisco. After that, i used to go back to my country, go to yemen, my country, and then back here. Last time i went back was a couple years ago. I came here six months, i know nobody. Now i have the team has a family, the coaches. Amazing. Im hoping for lifelong friendships, and im super inspired by what theyve been able to achieve and want to continue to grow alongside them. I love my family, i love my team. Theyre just like a family. Its really nice. Street soccer just received a five year grant from the department of children, youth and family, and this is an important inreflection point for street soccer u. S. A. Because their work in our most important communities is now known beyond just San Francisco recreation and Park Department, and together, were going to continue to work with our citys most vulnerable kids and teach them to love the beautiful game. I want to tell everybody back home, i hope you all make it over here and join teams like this like street soccer u. S. A. , and live your life. Get a better life. Right away, just be patient, and then, everything will be okay. My name is amanda [inaudible] over see the girls sports program.
