Office and i know so many people have a tremendous amount of respect for you and your work and i know together well push forward with some criminal changes in our criminal Justice System because we know minows work that people are truly represented and they have a fair trial is something thats important to me and to him and along with making sure that people get the best support and defense necessary. And also that we provide services and resources to people who in some instances may have made mistakes in their lives and need that hand to lift them up and support them, which we know he has done firsthand. So we couldnt have a better person to serve in this capacity and im honour ed thi honoured. I know you appointed you, but that doesnt always translate to when you win your election and get sworn in and its an honour to be here with you. And im looking forward to really working closely on this next four years because i know that people are looking for a change and looking for a difference and i know theyll see it in you. So at this time, ill swear you in. And then you can address your friends and family. Are we by the flag . Yes. Is this on sf gov tv . Yeah. [ laughter ] please raise your right hand, i, raju, do solemnly swear will support and defend the constitution of the United States and the constitution of the state of california. Anagainst all enemies foreign ad domestic and that i bear true faith and allegiance to the same. That i take this obligation freely without any mental reservation for a purpose of evasion and that i will well and faithfully discharge the duties upon which im about to enter and during such time as i serve as the public defender for the city and county of San Francisco. Congratulations thank you. [cheers and applause] so congratulations on your term. So ladies and gentlemen, your public defender, minno raju [cheers and applause] thank you, mayor. On behalf of my office, we truly appreciate all of your support through the years for both the office and decision. So i came to this office 12 years ago and i came in large part because of the vision that jeffidachi had. He was committed to us being a law office and also to be an office of zealous representation. What we mean, if you had a loved one charged with a crime or incarcerated, what kind of representation would you want for that loved one . And if were not providing that representation, we need to raise it so thats the level of representation being provided. And so as momentum gathered about me being the public defender, i came to many people in this room and talked to you about it, about whether that was the route thin right thing to ds moment and you all encouraged me saying you dont have a choice. Youre the person for this job and you have to do its. It. I took that step and i must say that i truly, truly appreciate this family of friends, allies and mentors who have been here for me throughout the years, including my first boss here. Its been quite a ride. I was appointed. I moved back to sanfrancisco. My whole family moved back to San Francisco. I was sworn in. We campaigned. We won. And now were here. Today is my mothers birthday. She cant be here today because shes in india with my big, beautiful family there, but i do want to acknowledge her and everything shes done to support me throughout the years. My motherinlaw is here representing her side of the family and shes always been just super supportive and i have a lot of love for you and the whole family. My father and sister have been here for me inspirationally and in spirit and are with me everyday, and my brother. And i also want to acknowledge my partner, asha. Her work in Youth Development and Leadership Development is vital to so many of the communities that we represent and i learned so much from you everyday. So thank you. And i told aston, i said were in San Francisco, were going to move to oakland and time to move back to San Francisco, away from your little crew and you wont be able to see them quite as often. I said, should we do this and his response was, you have to do this because you have to continue to be a freedom fighter. Thats what we need at this time, so thank you. I have a lot of hope for what we can englis accomplish over the t several years, a lot of hope, for a lot of reasons, but i want to highlight three of the reasons. One is that while campaigning across the city and meeting people, ive been really energized by the dynamic, diverse and rich tapestry of Political Engagement from all corners of the city. Its truly heartwarming to live and work in a city where there are so many people who really care not just about their family and their community but the city at large, the state, the nation in the world and are willing to put their politics on the line. I also have a lot of optimism and hope because of the deep commitment by our hardworking and talented staff who truly believe and are committed to highlevel representation and systemic reform. We recognise nationally as a beacon of Public Defense and thats not going to change. And i would say most importantly, i have hope because of the sheer billance of the intergenerational resilience of so many of those that we represent and their families. Thats something that really im inspired by everyday when you i walk across the street to 850 bryant. In 1859 on this date, richard and Mildred Loving because they violated race to interracial marriage were violated to a year in prison unless they agreed to leave the state of virginia for 25 years. Thats not that long ago. Those sentiments and laws which bring about division and continue to haunt and perpetuate inequity have real human consequences. They had consequences then and they have consequences now. This is a time for change. We need to bring about more awareness and we will and with growing awareness, meaningful change truly is possible. A friend hear sent u here sent r the holidays and in there was a quotation, courage is the most important of all virtues because without courage, you cant practise any other virtue consistently. Im honoured and proud to have been voted to be your leader of the San Francisco public defenders office. And i will continue to aspire to serve the city fervently, compassionately and always with courage. Thank you. [cheers and applause[cheers and] cheer there we go. Thank you. Congratulations [cheers and applause] welcome to another episode of safety on today is episode well show you how 0 retroactive youre home lets go inside and take a look. Hi and patrick chief officer and director of earthquake for the city and county of San Francisco welcome to another episode of stay safe in our model home with matt well talk about plywood. Great thanks. Where are we we if you notice bare studs those are prone to failure in an earthquake we need to stabilize those they dont lean over and plywood is effective as long as you nail along every edge of the plywood for the framing well nail along the sides and top and on the bottom 0 immediately youll see a problem in a typical San Francisco construction because nothing to nail the bottom of the plywood weve got to wind block between the studs and well secure this to the mud sill with nails or surface screws something to nail the bottom of the plywood. I notice we have not bolted the foundation in the previous episode thorough goes through options with different products so, now we have the blocking well a xoich attach the plywood. The third thing well attach the floor framing of the house above so the top of the braced walls one to have a steel angle on top of this wall and types of to the top of the wall with nails into the top plate and the nails in this direction driving a nail it difficult unless you have a specialized tool so this makes that easy this is good, good for about 5 hundred pounds of earthquake swinging before and after that mount to the face of wall it secures the top of wall and nailed into the top plate of the with triple wall and this gives us a secure to resist the forces. So you now see the space is totally available to dots blocking that he bottom and bolted the foundation in corneas what the code in the next good morning, everybody. The meeting will come to order. Welcome to the january 9th, 2020 regular meeting of the Public Safety and neighborhood committee. Im raphael mamdelman. Supervisor walson is not able to be here as hes attending a joint powers Board Meeting and to my left, supervisor hainey stepped. I want to thank
