That is love. Now, i want to talk about what excites me so much specifically about the investment in oakland. Young people, we throw around this 8. 7 million. Let me say it in the long form 8,700,000. Okay. Think of a stack of 1 bills. Thats some serious cash. That is just this year. I just want to recognize that since you began partnering with oakland, you have increased your investment every year. [ cheering and applause ]. Since london had a go back in your time machine, youre going to have to indulge me a little bit too. We all can picture in our minds that teacher, that teacher that changed our lives, that teacher who is the reason that we developed the confidence, the vision, maybe the hutspah to be where we are today. What excites me about this years investment from sales force is a new focus on teacher recruitment and retention. [ applause ]. Teachers like ms. Ducatz. She was my Dance Teacher at skyline high school. When i started running for mayor, she would show up at all my events. She would raise her hand and inform everybody that would listen that when i was in high school i choreographed a dance number where i literally leapt off a tall structure into the trusting arms of my fellow dancers and that she knew i was going to be a great mayor because i have always been a risk taker. There she was. My High School Teacher tracked me down to support me for running for mayor in my hometown a lot of decades later. Trust me, my young friends, when i went to high school, i took typing class. There were no computers. There was no internet, no facebook, no snapchat, no fortnite, none of that stuff. And yet, when i became the mayor and visited my Old High School campus, it didnt look a lot different. Now sales force has changed that with a deep investment in Computer Science. You all probably dont know what a typewriter is, do you . Do you know who a typewriter is . I see a blank look right there. Its all right. Its all right. You dont need them anymore. Yeah, you. I am also truly excited in our investment in our newcomer population. I am extremely proud to be possibly the most unapologetic city mayor in america. [ applause ]. We know that our region thrives because of its commitment to inclusive diversity, and we recognize that while everyone in this expensive bay area is struggling, there is a special need from our families who are fleeing oppression, violence, and seeking opportunity in this country. We want to welcome them and help them be successful and thrive in our communities which we want them to feel is home. In oakland, we know that, like San Francisco, we struggle with homelessness. And yet, when we look at our Homeless Population of our students in schools, half are newcomer, uncompanied minors. That is something that deserves our serious attention, love, and care. Thank you for investigating in th that. [ applause ]. Finally, i want to recognize your continuing investment in middle schools. Middle school was miserable for me. It was a hard time. And yet, it is one of the most crucial turning points in our life, when you find your identity, where you start to dream big, where you start to see your future unfold before you. As i introduce our next speaker, i will share something personal because i know shes going to go into a little bit more depth about the oakland investment. One little fun fact about the two of us. I see you, principal. We are both the mothers of middle school, Public School students in oakland. So to our incredible, heroic middle School Principals, this investment could not be more deserved than by the leaders that take care of not just our babies, but literally our babies. Its my pleasure to introduce to you the superintendent of the Oakland Unified School district, kyla johnson. Trammell. [ applause ]. Thank you all for being here. I want to give a shout out to my tour guide so i could see the campus. Thank you for your hospitality and touring us around. If you can repeat after me. I am because you are. I am going to flip that a little bit. I am because we are. This was an old african proverb that my grandmother said to me a lot. It resonates in terms of why were here beyond the cameras, beyond all the lights. Really what i believe is in marks heart and all of our hearts is that we are much Better Together than we are as individuals. When we all come together with our brilliance, when we come together with our resources, when we come together with our determination for these students, we can do impossible things. I truly believe that. If theres anything that you all get out of today. Its, one, that i believe mark has not only set forth a vision, but actually a pretty concrete model in terms of how corporate can work hand in hand with school districts. I think theres so much more we can do if we work together. I want to talk a little bit some of the journey weve been on in oakland, specifically around middle schools. I want to give a shout out to some of my middle School Principals, superintendent. I know there was a lot of them that worked together with mark. So the listening isnt lip service. Its really him coming and listening to what are the needs in the schools. Oakland and San Francisco, we have similar challenges, but there are differences. There is a different context. He really took the time, hours, to really listen for us to craft the best way to use the resources so that we would have impacts. So we really decided that we would focus on middle school, knowing that ultimately we want our kids to graduate, not only prepared for college, not only prepared for work, but prepared to be thriving, productive citizens. So really wanting to have a deep investment in middle school, knowing how critical that adolescent time is, to prepare kids to actually be their best selves in high school. Were starting to see some gains in math achievement. We focused on investing and professional development for teachers. Across the united states, its very challenging to actually recruit math and science teachers. Particularly right now in the bay area to retain. Who believes that living in the bay area is expensive, raise your hand. Okay. So were working creatively, the mayor, corporate, Public School systems to figure out how can we make a place . We cannot can thriving cities unless our Public Servants can afford to live in the city. Am i right . That is a problem that we all need to take ownership of, and mark is doing that with us in terms of really developing pipelines. In terms of preparing kids for the world of work, weve really focused on having not only a few Computer Science classes in some of our middle schools, but really thinking of a clear pathway. We know for students that look like me, we want to give them exposure early and be able to see themselves as future marks, entrepreneurs, anything they want to be in middle school before they get to high school. So weve grown from having Computer Science classes in two of our middle schools, access to 82 schools to now over 1,750 students in our middle schools and working on improving the rigour of those programs. Im a big believer that Computer Science is a language, just like spanish, just like french. So whether a kid goes into stem field, thats great, but we want all kids to understand the devices that theyre using and how they work. That is a right every kid should have as part of their education. When were thinking about what education should be in the future. Were now on the pathway to have that as an integral part of our curriculum in middle school. Finally in terms of our newcomer population thats growing leaps and bounds. We want to support our students to be their best selves. With this partnership we have developed for supports for students in terms of mental health, any other wraparound services. So when they enter the country they can be as successful as possible. Those are some of the concrete examples in the way this partnership has helped us. I want to challenge you, when you look around the world, you really do see the village here. You see some of our teachers and principals that are here. Obviously what were all here for, which are students. But i see folks from nonprofit. I see elected officials. I see corporations. So again, when were all with the gifts that we have, with the resources and the talents that we have when we come together, we really can support all of our students in both cities. Thank you all for the investments and thank you all for being here. [ applause ]. Without further ado, i would like to introduce my partner in crime on similarly dr. Matthews was raised in San Francisco. So we both have the privilege of leading school districts. He is the former state administrator and superintendent in san jose and now the wonderful superintendent of San Francisco. He is my friend and my mentor. So i would like to bring him to the mic. [ applause ]. Good afternoon, everyone. Im going to try that again. Good afternoon, everyone. This is an exciting afternoon, an exciting day. I want to thank sales force for not only what youre doing this year, but the last seven years. Its been amazing to watch this happen over time. Actually, one of our principals, hes in the back, i want, charles, if you can stand up just for a second. [ applause ]. I just wanted you to place a face with the many middle School Principals who are sitting in this room today. Think about the challenge that theyre presented with. Six years ago our Community Came together and we created a vision of where we wanted our students to be and what we wanted our graduates to look like. We called that vision 2025. We were all in agreement that this is what we wanted, but we knew we would not be able to get there without significant changes in how our schools operate. We knew there is no way we could make that happen with just the public dollars that we had. Sales force came in and they listened. You heard that earlier. They listened to what we were saying. They made the commit to support that vision, that every student would discover their spark along with a strong sense of self and purpose and graduate ready for college and career. Weve been able to go much further much faster because of this partnership with sales force. We would not have been able to get where we are today without that partnership and without sales force coming in and being that partner with us. With the investments from sales force in stem, we created the nations first prek Computer Science program and we strengthened our math instruction. Sales force is helping us transform the middle School Experience for our students by encouraging principalled innovation and enabling more handson student learning. As i said earlier, this does not happen without sales force being there. The results speak for themselves. Our district is the first urban district in california to exceed 50 proficiency in mathematics. Im going to wait for the [ applause applause. [ applause ]. Under the new common core aligned assessments, the number of students studying Computer Science over the last five years has grown from 700 students, five years ago it was 700 students in San Francisco unified studying Computer Science to 25,000 today. [ applause ]. One of the things that you need to understand is when we had 700 students in Computer Science, most of those students were white or asian males. Today those 25,000 students are reflective of our demographics of our district, more latino students, more asian students, more women. So lets give that a big round of applause. [ applause ]. You heard a bit about my background. Ive had the pleasure and privilege this is my 14th year of being a superintendent. There is supposed to be a gasp because i just cant possibly be that old. There you go, i like that sound. 14th year of being a superintendent in four large urban school districts. In each and every one of those previous districts, my hope and what i prayed for was a Strong Partnership with the community partners. Sales force is not only the best partnership that ive ever seen. It is actually the model for what these partnerships should look like. From the bottom of my heart, i thank you. I thank each and every one of you. This is what it takes to make it happen for our young people. Being involved, standing shouldertoshoulder, listening, rolling up our sleeves, and making it happen. So thank you to you all. So i just want to say and im sure you all feel the same that i am so inspired to be here today celebrating this partnership, celebrating youth students, and celebrating our Public Schools. This is really amazing work were doing and its so important. As mark said, we really want to issue a call to action to all c. E. O. S and to all companies to adopt a public goal. We feel that its so important. Yes. Id like to thank all of the speakers for being here today. We know that this work wouldnt be possible without us working and partnering together. I would like to thank all of the sales force people for being here. And last but not least, i would like to give it up to the students, not just the Presidio Middle School students, but all the students who make up our bay area. Lets give it up to them. All right. Thank you all for being here and have a wonderful afternoon. Thanks, everyone. [ ] [ ] i am the supervisor of district one. I am sandra lee fewer. [ ] i moved to the Richmond District in 1950 mine. I was two years old. I moved from chinatown and we were one of the first asian families to move out here. [ ] when my mother decided to buy that house, nobody knew where it was. It seems so far away. For a long time, we were the only chinese family there but we started to see the areas of growth to serve a larger chinese population. The stress was storage of the birthplace of that. My father would have to go to chinatown for dim sum and i remember one day he came home and said, there is one here now. It just started to grow very organically. It is the same thing with the russian population, which is another very large ethnic group in the Richmond District. As russia started to move in, we saw more russian stores. So parts of the richmond is very concentrated with the Russian Community and immigrant Russian Community, and also a chinese immigrant community. [ ] i think as living here in the richmond, we really appreciate the fact that we are surrounded three natural barriers. They are beautiful barriers. The presidio which gives us so many trails to walk through, ocean beach, for families to just go to the beach and be in the Pacific Ocean. We also also have a National Park service. We boarded the Golden Gate NationalRecreation Area so there is a lot of activity to do in the summer time you see people with bonfires. But really families enjoying the beach and the Pacific Ocean during the rest of the time of year. [ ] and Golden Gate Park where we have so many of our treasures here. We have the tea garden, the museum and the academy of sciences. Not to mention the wonderful playgrounds that we have here in richmond. This is why i say the richmond is a great place for families. The theatre is a treasure in our neighborhood. It has been around for a very long time. Is one of our two neighborhood theatres that we have here. I moved here when i was 1959 when i was two years old. We would always go here. I love these neighborhood theatres. It is one of the places that has not only a landmark in the Richmond District, but also in San Francisco. Small theatres showing one or two films. A unique they are unique also to the neighborhood and San Francisco. Where we are today is the heart of the Richmond District. With what is unique is that it is also Small Businesses. There is a different retail here it is mom and pop opening up businesses. And providing for the neighborhood. This is what we love about the streets. The cora door starts on clement street and goes all the way down to the end of clement where you will see Small Businesses even towards 32nd. At the core of it is right here between here and 20 tenth avenue. When we see this variety of stores offered here, it is very unique then of the any other part of San Francisco. There is traditional irish music which you dont get hardly anywhere in San Francisco. Some places have this long legacy of serving ice cream and being a hangout for families to have a sunday afternoon ice cream. And then also, we see grocery stores. And also these restaurants that are just new here, but also thriving. [ ] we are seeing restaurants being switched over by hand, new owners, but what we are seeing is a vibrancy of clement street still being recaptured within new businesses that are coming in. That is a really great thing to see. I dont know when i started to shop here, but it was probably a very, very long time ago. I like to cook a lot but i like to cook chinese food. The market is the place i like to come to once a year. Once i like about the market as it is very affordable. It has Fresh Produce and fresh meat. Also, seafood. But they also offer a large selection of condiments and sauces and noodles. A variety of rice that they have is tremendous. I dont thank you can find a variety like that anywhere else. Hi. I am kevin wong. I am the manager. In 1989 we move from chinatown to Richmond District. We have opened for a bit, over 29 years. We carry products from thailand, japan, indonesia, vietnam, singapore and india. We try to keep Everything Fresh daily. So a customer can get the best out a bit. Normally during crab season in november, this is the first place i hit. Because they have really just really fresh crab. This is something my family really likes for me to make. Also, from my traditional chinese food, i love to make a kale soup. They cut it to the size they really want. I am probably here once a week. Im very familiar with the aisles and they know everyone who is a cashier cashier here i know when people come into a market such as this, it looks like an asian supermarkets, which it is and sometimes it can be intimidating. We dont speak the language and many of the labels are in chinese, you may not know what to buy or if it is the proper ingredients for the recipe are trying to make. I do see a lot of people here with a recipe card or sometimes with a magazine and they are looking for specific items. The staff here is very helpful. I speak very little chinese here myself. Thinks that im not sure about, i asked the clerk his and i say is this what i need . Is this what i should be making . And they actually really helped me. They will bring me to the aisle and say this is battery. They are very knowledgeable. Very friendly. I think they are here to serve not only the Asian Community but to serve all communities in the Richmond District and in San Francisco. [ ] what is wonderful about living here is that even though our july is a very foggy and overcast, best neighborhood, the sleepy part outside on the west side is so rich with history, but also with all the amenities that are offered. [ ] shop and dine on the 49 promotes local businesses and challenges residents to do shopping and dining within the 49 square miles of San Francisco by supporting local Services Within neighborhood. We help San Francisco remain unique, successful and vibrant. Where will you shop and dine in the 49 . San francisco owes the charm to the unique character of the neighborhood comer hall district. Each corridor has its own personality. Our neighborhoods are the engine of the city. You are putting money and support back to the community you live in and you are helping Small Businesses grow. It is more environmentally friendly. Shopping local is very important. I have had relationships with my local growers for 30 years. By shopping here and supporting us locally, you are also supporting the growers of the flowers, they are fresh and they have a price point that is not imported. It is really good for everybody. Shopping locally is crucial. Without that support, Small Business cant survive, and if we lose Small Business, that diversity goes away, and, you know, it would be a shame to see that become a thing of the past. It is important to dine and shop locally. It allows us to maintain traditions. It makes the neighborhood. I think San Francisco should shop local as much as they can. The retail marketplace is changes. We are trying to have people on the floor who can talk to you and help you with products you are interested in buying, and help you with exploration to try things you have never had before. The fish business, you think it is a piece of fish and fisherman. There are a lot of people working in the fish business, between wholesalers and fishermen and bait and tackle. At the retail end, we about a lot of people and it is good for everybody. Shopping and dining locally is so important to the community because it brings a tighter fabric to the community and allows the Business Owners to thrive in the community. We see more Small Businesses going away. We need to shop locally to keep the Small Business alive in San Francisco. Shop and dine in the 49 is a cool initiative. You can see the banners in the streets around town. It is great. Anything that can showcase and legitimize Small Businesses is a wonderful thing. Mayor breed i just figured everybody would be at work and it would be a couple of us today. But i see the cole valley Community Came out. Thank you so much for being here today at wooden, one of the newest establishments right here in the cole valley community. This is an amazing neighborhood. So many great places like reverie and the ice cream bar and zazie. This is an incredible place to enjoy the day. Theres wine that you can buy. There is a postal service. There is hardware. Anything that you want is located in this community. Its one of the bestkept secrets in San Francisco. I know that because i come out here and hide a lot. [ laughter ]. Mayor breed but of course the community, they recognize me because i served as a supervisor and one of the things that we know happens sometimes with our Small Businesses, they get caught up in the bureaucracy, when all they want to do is provide a service to the community. This is a neighborhood where people know one another, where they walk down the street and see one another, where they hang out in places like this to enjoy each others company. Where we have watched kids grow up in this neighborhood. The fact that Small Businesses which oftentimes are run by the owners of the Small Businesses, the fact that they have to deal with so much bureaucracy makes me crazy. One of the things i have said we need to do time and time again is can you tell the bureaucratic red tape that gets in the way of allowing our Small Businesses to just exist and be enjoyable for communities like cole valley. [ applause ]. Mayor breed so id like to use this as an example, and let me pause for a minute and recognize captain bailey and the folks from park Police Station and the people who keep our community safe. We really appreciate you. [ applause ]. Mayor breed but when i was supervisor, val, you remember this, free gold watch. You all know that, the pinball machines in that place. So free gold watch, an incredible place. There were pinball machine tournaments, there were activities, a place where the Community Came together. Well, unfortunately it discovered after they opened that they were basically not in compliance with the law. Years ago in the 1980s when we thought that video games were going to destroy young people, destroy civilization as we know it, all these laws were created that limited the ability to have these arcade locations within the certain area of the school or a park or gas station and all this craziness. I just couldnt believe it that we could potentially lose this amazing institution because of some dated laws. Of course, its not just about creating new laws, but about fixing the old laws that put us in this situation in the first place. We got rid of that. Free gold watch and all these other amazing places are open to bring back our childhood for most of us who lived through that time. This is no exception, where i think you just if you just wanted to basically have music and sell a little bit of wine and beer for a comedy night. What he had to go through has been crazy because of some laws that were passed that impact neighboring communities which is sometimes unfair. What we are doing today is making it easier for Small Businesses to provide what i think is a basic community service. Of course, when youre watching comedy, you have to have wine or beer or some kind of beverage in your hand to just enjoy it. Because most of the comics sometimes arent even funny. [ laughter ]. Mayor breed so here we are. Trying to make it easier for our Small Business community and sign this legislation. My commitment to addressing what we know is a real challenge around how Small Businesses are able to survive and thrive in this city is important to me. Dealing with our empty store fronts, coming up with new solutions, both with changes to our policies but also with financial investments. Even if we cant get rid of certain fees, i do think its important that we continue through the Mayors Office of economic and Workforce Development under the leadership of qua joaquim torez to make sure we are working with Small Businesses to do facade improvements and many others. This is how were going to get there and the board of supervisors who has been incredibly focused. Even before she was on the board of supervisors where she served as a legislative aid for two previous supervisors, i was one of those supervisors, there was no one more committed to supporting Small Businesses and being responsive to the community than your supervisor, district 5 supervisor, val brown. [ applause ]. I just want to thank a few people. I have them written down. I want to first thank the mayor. I want to thank the team at o. E. W. D. , ben, when we were doing this legislation, it was grinding. Just because it was pushed out, came back. Ben would come back and think he had a way to do that. I want to thank my aide in the corner hiding like normal. [ applause ]. He kept saying, we can do it, we can do it. I want to thank the chamber of commerce. They were there all along coming to meetings and speaking in favor. The council of district merchants. And really especially the cole valley community. When this came to me i have to say, though, this is kind of a bit of a strange groundhog day for me. When we talked about this, actually planning came to us ten years ago and asked us to clean up a lot of the regulations around these kind of restrictions for businesses, because they said they were archaic, hurting Small Business. You have to remember ten years ago we were in a downturn, the economic downturn. We just didnt have time or the bandwidth to deal with it. When this came back to me ten years in the making, that happened with clean power. I started clean power and finished it in supervisor breeds office. This was ten years in the making again. But this time i said, hey, you know what . This is a heavy lift, but we need to do this for Small Businesses. We need to do this for the person that comes every morning, opens up their door, is here serving coffee, is here cutting your hair, giving you some of the best cheese youve ever had at say cheese. We need to do this for Small Business. Theyre struggling. We, as a city, should be doing everything we can to keep Small Businesses in place and to open Small Businesses. We need to be able to take the regulations away that hurt them, to take the time it takes to open a Small Business. I dont know how you can afford to pay for a space for a year to 18 months before you even have a business. How is that possible . You have to probably save for two years just to open a Small Business. So we have to say no. We have to make sure that we protect Small Businesses. Because, look, i lived in lower haye for 20 years and then i moved into this community. I feel its a mayberry. I walk down the street and know everybody. I can go from one store to another and get what i need for my Everyday Needs and meet the people that i absolutely adore on these streets. So we have to keep these neighborhood corridors vibrant. If we dont have vibrant neighborhood corridors, what does that do . That affects the whole entire community. When the neighbors came to me, cole valley, and said, look, we really support this business. They want a simple beer and wine license so he can have comedy night. How many times does a neighborhood come to you and say we want this business of a beer and wine . Usually its the owner, right . I said, wow, steve, you must have done something right in this neighborhood because they absolutely loved steve and said, steve, we want you to be here and successful. The least i could do was take this legislation and push it through. Now, it took me three times before it went through l. A. N. Use and i had third time is a charm and we got it through. We did it and we all worked together, and it was unanimous at the board. I want to thank everyone who was involved. There was so many people who came out for public comment. People behind the scenes saying this is what we need. Steve, you came to those public comments. Your staff watched the store while you came. Your cafe. You waited and spoke three times. Im sorry. We shouldnt be doing that to Small Businesses. So really appreciate your time becau because, steve, you helped the whole city. You helped the whole city when the supervisors heard your story and they said, weve got to help this person, this Small Business, you helped the whole city. So youre an activist. [ applause ]. So that point im going to introduce steve wikwire that owns this marvelous cafe and give you a few words. Thank you. [ applause ]. Thank you all for being here. So some of you know i opened this shop after working in San Francisco for ten years. I wanted to bring my passion and dedication for really highend Coffee Service to cole valley, where i thought it was needed. Its been really awesome and amazing being able to contribute to this community. With this legislation passing, well be able to contribute more, namely, staying open later, providing beer and wine service, and doing really fun comedy shows here that i think will just breathe some new life into the neighborhood and add to the mix around here. I really just want to thank our District Supervisor vallie brown and her team for supporting this. [ applause ]. If we do want to see more Small Businesses opening and being run by community members, people who want to serve their communities. It just needs to be a little bit easier to do. We need more pathways for these businesses to grow and adapt as they move forward. So thats really what this is all about. All of your support has made that happen here, so thank you all so much. It literally is a chamber of commerce day here in San Francisco. I want to thank mayor breed, supervisor brown for being champions of this legislation. All of the points you bring up about the vitality of San Francisco, how important it is for our streets to be filled with people and to get involved with businesses. At the chamber of commerce weve put an emphasis on Small Businesses. I feel growing up in a Small Business and running our wax museum down at fishermens wharf, creativity is the secret sauce. If we can give entrepreneurs the ability to be cultivators of things, were going to do well. Im happy to be here. I hope we have many, many more opportunities like this. Congratulations to the Planning Department and clearing some of the red tape. Hopefully we can get more businesses open here this San Francisco. Before we sign this legislation, i just want to thank our two Small Business commissioners for being here today. Thank you so much. Steve, who is the president of the commission and sharkie, one of the newest swornin commissioners because of his challenges with his Small Business here in San Francisco. So you really have some champions helping to push forward the kinds of policies that hopefully will make a difference for our Small Business community here in San Francisco. Now, lets get this piece of legislation signed. [ applause ] [ applause ] [ ] [ ] i really believe that art should be available to people for free, and it should be part of our world, you shouldnt just be something in museums, and i love that the people can just go there and it is there for everyone. [ ] i would say i am a multidimensional artist. I came out of painting, but have also really enjoyed tactile properties of artwork and tile work. I always have an interest in public art. I really believe that art should be available to people for free, and it should be part of our world. You shouldnt just be something in museums. I love that people can just go there, and it is there for everyone. Public art is art with a job to do. It is a place where the architecture meets the public. Where the artist takes the meaning of the site, and gives a voice to its. We commission culture, murals, mosaics, black pieces, cut to mental, different types of material. It is not just downtown, or the big sculptures you see, we are in the neighborhood. Those are some of the most beloved kinds of projects that really give our libraries and Recreation Centers a sense of uniqueness, and being specific to that neighborhood. Colette test on a number of those projects for its. One of my favorites is the oceanview library, as well as several parks, and the steps. Mosaics are created with tile that is either broken or cut in some way, and rearranged to make a pattern. You need to use a tool, nippers, as they are called, to actually shape the tiles of it so you can get them to fit incorrectly. I glued them to mash, and then they are taken, now usually installed by someone who is not to me, and they put cement on the wall, and they pick up the mash with the tiles attached to it, and they stick it to the wall, and then they groped it afterwards. [ ] we had never really seen artwork done on a stairway of the kinds that we were thinking of because our idea was very just barely pictorial, and to have a picture broken up like that, we were not sure if it would visually work. So we just took paper that size and drew what our idea was, and cut it into strips, and took it down there and taped it to the steps, and stepped back and looked around, and walked up and down and figured out how it would really work visually. [ ] my theme was chinese heights because i find them very beautiful. And also because mosaic is such a heavy, dens, static medium, and i always like to try and incorporate movement into its, and i work with the theme of water a lot, with wind, with clouds, just because i like movements and lightness, so i liked the contrast of making kites out of very heavy, hard material. So one side is a dragon kite, and then there are several different kites in the sky with the clouds, and a little girl below flying it. [ ] there are pieces that are particularly meaningful to me. During the time that we were working on it, my son was a disaffected, unhappy high school student. There was a day where i was on the way to take them to school, and he was looking glum, as usual, and so halfway to school, i turned around and said, how about if i tell the school you are sick and you come make tiles with us, so there is a tile that he made to. It is a little bird. The relationship with a work of art is something that develops over time, and if you have memories connected with a place from when you are a child, and you come back and you see it again with the eyes of an adult, it is a different thing, and is just part of what makes the city an exciting place.
