Us out. We have business partners, medical dispensaries helping out. I want to say this importantly, ron conway called to give me 10,000. He wanted to put it to ed lee. He wants to help out. He knew that ed lee hated guns. You know, we have our mayor here, london breed, our new mayor. Give a hand. [applause. ] we have our supervisor in the house, our fearless District Supervisor. Jeff, come on up here, man. [applause. ] i want to also we have families of victims that are here. Mattie scott and we are going to get started, you guys. Before we start we have motorcycle sure that we honor our man and give him a moment of silence, ed lee. Thank you. One of the things i want to share this gun buy back we are having has been impacting so many people. I had a young man at the begin of the year who was took from senseless gun violence. I want to stipulate i am not against the Second Amendment but i am against sense less gun violence. We want kids and families able to celebrate christmas and holidays and live by not passing away by guns stolen out of houses, domestic violence, so many different dimensions how people are killed. We want to make sure we play apart we want have partners here that want to make sure that we have a successful gun buy back on saturday. I want to bring up our mayor, our new mayor, london breed. Thank you. Mayor breed thank you for covering this incredible event. You know, sadly, you grew up in a community where gun violence was a normal thing. As a kid, when you hear shots, when you go to funerals on a regular basis, you think that is normal. That should not be how we allow or children to grow up, not just in San Francisco but in society in general. We have got to do a better job, and gun buy backs like this is what changes lives. It prevents something from happening to someone elses kid, from someone elses husband, from someone elses daughter. John richard is here, the founder of brothers against guns. I was close with his brother tracey, we went to school together, hung out together, spent timed today. I would see anything to see tracey standing here and shawn would do anything to make that possible. Maddi scott is here. Knee her son george. An amazing person. Very handsome and charismatic, always supportive of other people, one of the most amazing people you ever want to meet. These are the people we are losing because of guns. These are the people that are no longer with us because of guns. Then what happens as a result of that, the pain, the pain, the grief, the loss. It is five years since sandy hook and since then over 500,000 people have been killed or injured because of guns. We have got to do better. I want to thank united players. They have been consistent in this fight. They have been consistent. applause for over six years they are hosting these gun buy backs and collected hundreds of guns and got them off the street. Think about the difference one gun can make in saving not just one life but several lives. We cant be satisfied. I use this quote last time from the late doctor Martin Luther king when i spoke at saint dominics when we commemorated the sandy hook tragedy that happened. I said let us not be satisfied. Let us not be satisfied until it is more important to protect our children than it is it shouldnt be more important to protect the Second Amendment than it is to protect our children. [applause. ] we cant be satisfied. Kids should not have access to guns easier than an opportunity to purchase toys or get toys. This is crazy. This the why this is important. This is why we have to make sure with all of cameras and newspaper we write the stories to get the people here. We want to people here on saturday. We want to make sure they just clear out their houses, clear out their trunks, wherever else they have a gun. What do you really need it for . Like our late may or. I hate guns, too. What they have done to my community. I hate that they have taken lives of the people i love and miss and who should be standing with me here today. I am asking all those in San Francisco and anyone else out there who wants to basically get rid of their guns, we have a place for you to do that. We have a place where you wont be judged, we just want them off the streets. We would appreciate your cooperation in supporting us and helping us do that. Thank you all so much for being here today. [applause. ] thank you, london breed. Give her a hand one more time, you all. Thank you so much. A native of San Francisco fighting against violence all of her life. I knew the mayor was extremely wanted to do was to have the gun buy backs. We had personal meetings where he would share with me and having her partner come and talk about neutralizing these guns. We have to make sure we have a lot of partners here speaking to it. I want to acknowledge the Outreach Team to get the message out there to get the guns off the streets. Our next speaker is our fear lease District Supervisor from district 6, jane kim. Please give a warm welcome. [applause. ] i just want to thank the members of the media for coming out to help us promote now the sixth annual gun buy back in the south of market hosted by united players. This is an important event that we support every single year. As mayor breed and former mayor lee said we need the guns off the streets. No questions asked. That is an important part of the event on saturday. We are asking the community and families to come in. We know the guns cause tremendous damage to the communities and families and loss of a single life has a tremendous repercussion to an entire neighborhood. None of us want to be the victims. We want to be sure the word gets out. I want to thank the many individuals who made this gun buy back possible. This is my seventh year representing this great district. I am proud to participate in the sixth annual gun buy back. This is not possible to have legal Small Businesses in the district willing to do Something Different and contribute to the gun buy back program. Many of the medical marijuana dispensaries like green door and access have been contributing today. We have news ron conway has given a major contribution. This is how to get the guns off the streets. Having participated in the event before, it is amazing who comes through. Knowing we are getting the guns off last year 113 guns off the street. If you can imagine the multiplier what that meant for the city and bay area. By the way among those guns how many assault weapons . 25 25 assault weapons off the streets in San Francisco in the bay area. [applause. ] that is a Merry Christmas and happy holidays to our city. We have to continue the work. Finally, i want to say there is a lot of media stories about relationships between the police and our community. This event is one of those positive stories about what it means when San Francisco Police Department and the Community Partner together. Deputy chief Michael Redman and chief stir was actively engage understand the gun buyback when we started six years ago. I want to recognize those two. We could not do this without sfpd. This is a story of positive policing in the community. It means a Safer Community for us all. I want to thank the officers and command staff for the engaged leadership on the issue. It goes beyond one day out of the year. This Police Department has made sure they are developing relationships directly with our youth on a regular basis coming to united players knowing who the young people in the neighborhood are. This is our deand apply our city. My neighborhood. We need a safer neighborhood for me, too. Thank you very much. [applause. ] the gun buy back is no questions asked. No questions asked. I want to bring up the chief, chief scott, come on up. [applause. ] good morning everybody. You know, it is easy to stand before you and talk about statistic. There are over 36,000 people each year in this country that lose their lives to gun violence. This year in San Francisco we have had 56 homicides, 38 were at the hands of a firearm, 13 suicides. I say that to bring it in context, but the real issue and the why is behind me. All of these people, the families that have been torn apart by gun violence. That is why we are here. It is the people that are left behind, the trail of victims and families left behind to deal with the aftermath. I applaud united players for putting this on. I applaud the mayor. I applaud supervisor kim. We are happy to be part of this. I want to piggyback on something the mayor said. The normalization of gun violence there. Is nothing normal about kids, families, people in our community having to hear gunshots go off, having to see their loved ones torn apart by gun violence. There is nothing formal about that. We cannot accept that as a normal part of life. That is what this is about. [applause. ] as mr. Corpus said. If you have guns in your house and need to get rid of them, this is the time to do it. No questions asked. Very simple process. It is for the good of this community. Please get the word out. There are too many guns in the street that fall into the hands of people that want to use them for bad. Lets get the word out and support this effort and thank you very much. [applause. ] before we bring on the last speaker, in the memory of ed lee, we have to push on. He would want us to push on. He wouldnt want nobody else killed or hurt behind guns or violence period. One of his requests was when we sat down and had lunches he jude to say i need you to help me make this the safest city in the world. Our neighborhood sixth street corridor is part of my mission and our mission i is to make sue that ed lee lives on. If we love him like we say we do, we honor him the way we live. I am going to read you off. One in three homes with children have a gun. Many left unlocked or loaded. 8 unintentional firearm deaths of kids under 15 occur in the home. Homicide and suicide by guns increase during the holidays. The words of maddi scott help end the pollution and be the solution to gun violence. Come on, we have to do this together. I will bring up joanne, one of our business partners. I am joanne hillary. I want to give my condolences to coworkers and friends and family of may or ed lee. It is a difficult time. I know the city of San Francisco will remain strong and be dedicated to the ideals he set forth. It is essential we all strive to be the greatest example of a member of the community so that we can truly honor all of those who have come and served and fought and were so dedicated before us. I believe ed lee represented that. The spirit of standing up and fighting for what is just and good for the community. It is partly the reason i am here today. My mother was also a public servant. She was an inspector for the us da ensuring compliance and food safety. On june 21, 2000 my mom and three colleagues walked into a facility under investigation. They were met with gunfire. Her and two of her fellow inspectors were waiting in the front room, he grabbed two guns, one in each hand and sprayed the room with bullets, surprised them and prayed the room with bullets. The three of them dropped to the floor. Then he went outside, chased the fourth inspector down, city streets of san leandro in the middle of the afternoon. No bystanders were injured. The fourth inspector was able to escape. He came back went to his office, reloaded his guns, walked into the room where they were laying stood above each one and shot them in the back of the head. Sorry. Now, i could rattle off statistics and very sound arguments why we need to make serious changes to the national gun laws, but common sense rationale has not worked in the last 17years since this happened. What i can tell you is my experience living with being close to gun violence and why programs like what up is doing with the gun buy back are so vitally important because the tragic events that day did not end that day. The Ripple Effect has been unending. The son of one of the victims committed suicide. He couldnt handle the loss. The woman who was on the call telling them to wait at the facility until the police came had to quit her job and move out of the area because she felt such a responsibility for the events that happened that day. My moms boss had bypass surgery because of the stress of the events. The fourth inspector who got away that day shortly after died because of the survivors guilt he held devastatingly for so long. The 17years later the events have not stopped the effects. The tragic gun violence continues as do the effects of all innocence of senseless gun violence. We have to stop the cycle. With each and every shooting i hear about, my heart breaks for these families because you can not reconcile why alloys the loved one to somebody who had easy access to guns. I know bullets do not discriminate. We as a Community Need to come together regardless of everything and work as a Community Together to stop this. This is what the gun buy back means to ne. This is why i support up and as difficult as this is i am telling my story because of what happened 17years ago. I remember it every day. I have so much respect for up and every one on the team and the work they are doing. They have seen the worst in gun violence and loss and tragedy and they choose to come every day so that every project you have going on so that hopefully no one else will have to experience the loss of the senseless gun events and violence. They represent what makes a community stronger, they lift each other up instead of slamming others down, and it is what we need in San Francisco, in the whole bay area, i am from east bay, and what we definitely most certainly need across the country. [applause. ] i want to say thank you to rudy, the up family, to the Civic Leaders and to the city of San Francisco. Thank you. [applause. ] i want to thank everybody who is a part of making this happen. Mayor breed, thank you so much project level, big ridge always represented, west bay, always helping out. My brothers, the chief, our supervisor right here, shaw richardson is consistent. Maddi scott. I aint going to name you all but you know who you are. There are people behind the scene that are consistent. My man has been hooking it up like a tow truck. I want to say there is 20 Community Participants in the gun buy back that is providing trigger locks this saturday. We have trigger locks. If you want a gun safety, come see us. It is free for that day. Brother right there front line soldiers making it happen. We are doing it together that is what ed lee did. He brought front line soldier to Work Together to end the senseless gun violence, you guys. Lets continue to live the legacy. He was a good friend of mine. He wasnt just a mayor. He was a wonderful and caring man. Lets live his legacy to make sure we destroy and get rid of as many guns as we can. Finally, i will say this. I was sent to israel. You know how devastating it is over there. There is more gun violence going on over there. They said one gun with one bullet that can kill one person can destroy the whole universe. I am going to flip it. One life that we save, one life will be the person who can change this whole universe so we can survive and live in peace. Thank you, guys, for coming out. I will let you handle it from here. Any questions about this event we can answer at this point in time . The gun buy back is this saturday, december 16, from 8 00 a. M. To noon. It will be here. 100 for handguns, 200 for assault rifles. No questions asked. Anybody want to get christmas money, come turn it in with no questions asked. Mayor breed will take questions. Any questions for mayor breed . How do you feel at this moment being the first africanamerican woman to make history . Standing beside you, women all over the world are watching you as mayor of San Francisco. It is challenging at this time mostly because mayor lee wasnt just the mayor of the city. He was my friend. I have known him over 20 years and worked with him closely as a member of a committee, and we handed out grants for neighborhood beauty and we would argue about which application to choose. We gave one to united players for a cleanup programming. I am thinking about the different suggestions and how we have worked together. Most important, i want to make sure that the city knows i am here to focus on the work that we know needs to be done. I am here to make sure that there is continuity of government, that the buses are running, everything that needs done for the incredible city that mayor lee loved in the same way i love it is welltaken care of. That is at the forefront. It is something i thought about and people brought to my attention. I am honored. I have known these kids when they were born. I am so proud of them. You know, it feels just amazing to be able to carry on an incredible legacy for the city. Mayor lee was a great person. I was honored to know him and more importantly i want to make sure that the citizens of San Francisco recognize what he has done and how hard he worked for the city and we will carry on in his honor. Will you make this a permanent job . Mayor breed i havent thought about that. I am here to do the job and do it well that is at the forefront of my thoughts. Can you walk us through us. Did you get phone calls or go to the hospital . Mayor breed i was contacted in the middle of the night and i went to the hospital, and basically had discussions with the staff and with the chief and others. I was given the news and made a decision to announce that when appropriate. Most important, i wanted to make sure that anita was okay and that his daughters were notified and didnt find out in the press. During that process in figuring those out and working with city officials and City Attorney to facilitate this because we knew as soon as the public heard the news that people would definitely be hurt and be devastated. I wanted to make sure that we delivered a message yesterday, which i did, to ensure the city that we are here to do the job and make things work. As you know, the city is a place that we have natural disasters. There is a lot of emergency things. Protecting this incredible city i love so much is always at the forefront of my thoughts. I met with our communications folks responsible for all of the major city departments who respond to emergencies, are proactive and understand the communication strategy if anything happens in the city so we are prepared and i am at the helm to make the decisions, talking to the Staff Members and ensuring them to take care of themselves. The list goes on. I have mostly felt sad, you know, during the process i havent felt anything but sad. Really, a little sad for the fact that, you know, my friend passed away. He was close to so many people. Seeing my friends who were close to him hurt, that is what death does to people. That is mostly the main emotion that i have felt. Also, of course, an incredible responsibility and just definitely up for the task. I know the city. I have worked for the city, i have been on the board and worked in the community. A lot of this stuff is Second Nature to me, and i have a great team of people. The mayors staff, my staff at the board of supervisors per they have been supportive. You know, mostly the feeling of sadness is not escaping my heart just yet. I think that is clouding Everything Else that i dont know if i am feeling or not. Are so many issues to tackle, guns, violence and homelessness. How do you move forward on that . That is one of the most troublesome issues. That is a lengthy question. It is something i have been working on in th the as Bury Community and working with the officers who are compassionate, providing more funding for resources. The hate has had the challenges. I have to tell you we have poured since i have been on the board so many resources with the help of late may or things have changed and gotten better and noticeable. Of course, we see all over the city this is a challenge. This will definitely be my top priority. I know that you are like you want more details because of the stories you write on this issue. We have to have another conversation about that at a later time. In terms of i know that you have in your mind so many things you want to do for the city. Can you share with us perhaps one to three things that are on the top of your agenda . Bree mayor breed ensuring the public we will take care of the city. The police will be there, the Fire Department there be there, the buses will run, the potholes will be fixed if you call three one one. That is my number one priority. applause and, of course, tackling the issues i have tackled on the board of supervisors pe. Safe injection sites stuff around mental health. I am not blind. I see what happened in our streets every day. I will continue to push for my housing. I introduced the legislation to purchase the mcdonald site where we will build 100 affordable housing. We are also going to use neighborhood preference to make sure that people who are in that Community Get access to those units. The priorities are going to be everything that is important and everything that is San Francisco. Iit is a crazy quilt of mixed up things that will be important and my priority. One more question. That is it. Do you think you are qualified to take this position. Given the fact you grew up here and have relationships with different groups, your babies . Mayor breed you know, i dont know what to say to that. I would just say that i have a unique experience growing up in San Francisco, probably not like anyone else that is in a position like this. I grew up here, grew up in public housing, i went to college, i worked in the community. I caught the buses all over the place, went to the cow palace for wassing. You remember hawk hogan. I have this love affair with the city i grew up in. Imagine growing up here with a lot of things i discovered. My first boy i liked at school, and all of those things. laughter you werent at school now. I was waiting outside. But i am so proud of rudy. I have known him for so long and just to see the person he has become. I am so proud. [applause. ] when i think about all of my experiences, the fact i am in this incredible position. When i won the first time in 2012 for the board of supervisors. Did i really win . I couldnt believe it. It was amazing. That feeling of service has been a part of my life. As mayor that is what you do is serve the community. Knowing the city and the pockets how it works and the people from everywhere in all walks of life. I am blessed to have those experiences. I never forget where i came from. I will use those experiences to make good decision also on behalf of the city. I dont if i am uniquely qualified but i feel strongly i am qualified and prepared to do this job. [applause. ] hi. Welcome to San Francisco. Stay safe and exploring how you can stay in your home safely after an earthquake. Lets look at common earthquake myths. We are here at the urban center on Mission Street in San Francisco. We have 3 guest today. We have david constructional engineer and bill harvey. I want to talk about urban myths. What do you think about earthquakes, can you tell if they are coming in advance . Hes sleeping during those earthquakes . Have you noticed him take any special . No. He sleeps right through them. There is no truth that im aware of with harvey that dogs are aware of an impending earthquake. You hear the myth all the time. Suppose the dog helps you get up, is it going to help you do something i hear they are aware of small vibrations. But yes, i read extensively that dogs cannot realize earthquakes. Today is a spectacular day in San Francisco and sometimes people would say this is earthquake weather. Is this earthquake weather . No. Not that i have heard of. No such thing. There is no such thing. We are talking about the weather in a daily or weekly cycle. There is no relationship. I have heard its hot or cold weather or rain. Im not sure which is the myth. How about time of day . Yes. It happens when its least convenient. When it happens people say we were lucky and when they dont. Its terrible timing. Its never a good time for an earthquake. But we are going to have one. How about the ground swallowing people into the ground . Like the earth that collapsed . Its not like the tv shows. The earth does move and it bumps up and you get a ground fracture but its not something that opens up and sucks you up into haddes. Its not going anywhere. We are going to have a lot of damage, but this myth that california is going to the ocean is not real. Southern california is moving north. Its coming up from the south to the north. You would have to invest the million year cycle, not weeks or years. Maybe millions of years from now, part of los angeles will be in the bay area. For better or worse. Yes. This is a tough question. Those other ones werent tough. This is a really easy challenge. Are the smaller ones less stress . Yes. The amount released in small earthquakes is that they are so small in you need many of those. I think would you probably have to have maybe hundreds of magnitude earthquakes of 4. 7. So small earthquakes are not making our lives better in the future . Not anyway that you can count on. I have heard that buildings in San Francisco are on rollers and isolated . Its not true. Its a conventional Foundation Like almost all the circumstances buildings in San Francisco. The transamerica was built way before. Its a pretty conventional foundation design. I have heard about this thing called the triangle of life and up you are supposed to go to the edge of your bed to save yourself. Is there anything of value to that . Yes, if you are in your room. You should drop, cover and hold onto something. If you are in school, same thing, kitchen same thing. If you happen to be in your bed, and you rollover your bed, its not a bad place to be. The reality is when we have a major earthquake the ground shaking so pronounced that you are not going to be able to get up and go anywhere. You are pretty much staying where you are when that earthquake hits. You are not going to be able to stand up and run with gravity. You want to get under the door frame but you are not moving to great distances. Where can i buy a Richter Scale . Mr. Richter is selling it. We are going to put a plug in for cold hardware. They are not available. Its a rather complex. In fact we dont even use the Richter Scale anymore. We use a moment magnitude. The Richter Scale was early technology. Probably a myth that i hear most often is my building is just fine in the loma prieta earthquake so everything is fine. Is that true . Loma prieta was different. The ground acceleration here was quite moderate and the duration was moderate. So anyone that believes they survived a big earthquake and their building has been tested is sadly mistaken. We are planning for the bigger earthquake closer to San Francisco and a fault totally independent. Much stronger than the loma prieta earthquake. So people who were here in 89 they should say 3 times as strong and twice as long and that will give them more of an occasion of the earthquake we would have. 10 percent isnt really the threshold of damage. When you triple it you cross that line. Its much more damage in earthquake. I want to thank you, harvey, thanks pat for shop dine in the 49 promotes local businesses and challenges resident to do their showing up and dining within the 49 square miles of San Francisco by supporting local Services Within the neighborhood we help San Francisco remain unique successful and vibrant so where will you shop dine in the 49 San Francisco owes must of the charm to the unique characterization of each corridor has a distinction permanent our neighbors are the economic engine of the city. Special things to the women that offered me a chance safe house will forever be a part of the who ive become and you made that possible life didnt get any better than that. Whove would know this look of this girl grown up in atlanta will be working with produced women in San Francisco part of the system that has abused and expedited and obtain identified and degraded women for century around the world and still do at the embody the spirits of women that just know they deserve respect and intend to get it. I dont want to just so women younger women become a part of the the Current System we need to change the system we dont need to go up the ladder we need to change the corporations we need more women like that and theyre out there. We get have to get to help them
