The upper North Island could be battered by severe weather during the second half of the long weekend. Parts of Northland, Auckland and Coromandel will be subject to heavy rain, strong winds and large waves.
Heavy rain is expected for the West Coast, Northland and the Coromandel while severe gales could whip through parts of the Far North as a front makes its way up the country.
MetService meteorologist Andrew James said a “broad frontal system” lying over the South Island, which was preceded by strong northerly winds, was moving slowly north on Sunday, triggering several heavy rain warnings and strong wind watches.
