Sequoyah (áááá¯) was born in Monroe County, Tennessee which is east of the Chillhowee Mountain. He lives about 8 miles away from New Echota, the old Cherokee Nation Capital. Sequoyah was born around 1760 - 1765 and died about 1843. Sequoyahâs mother's name is Wut-teh she belongs to the red paint clan, his father had left before Sequoyah was born, and he is believed to be known as George Gist, a German paddler of Nathaniel Gist, an English fur trader. The English name that was given to him was George Gist, his Cherokee name (S-si-qua-ya or áááá¯) meant âpigâs footâ. After Sequoyah was left permanently crippled. Some say it was from a battle others say it was an early hunting accident he became a craftsman. He had a talent for making silver ornaments and for blacksmith. Before he had become physically unable to do work Sequoyah worked as a silversmith. In 1815 Sequoyah had married Sally Waters of the Bird Clan. Her family had later settled in the Sallisaw area. Due to Sequoyah writing the Syllabary him and his daughter (A-Yo-Ka) was charged with witchcraft, although his first student to teach how to read and write the syllabary
