The Seneca County Sheriffâs Office has submitted its police reform plan, as mandated by Gov. Andrew Cuomo in 2020. Those plans were due by April 1, and while there were documented complaints in law enforcement circles after the initial announcement, Senecaâs law enforcement leaders viewed it as an opportunity.
There are a handful of important components, which have been points of contention in other communities across the U.S. They include updates to use of force training, crowd management control, community policing to develop relationships, de-escalation training, implicit bias training, and more.
âItâs been an opportunity to get better, and thatâs what we want to do,â Sheriff Tim Luce said of the plan.
