Raleigh, N.C. — A former state lawmaker and long-time school choice advocate is pitching the General Assembly on a $1,200 grant for struggling students.
The program, which would have a high price tag and need legislative approval, could be used to pay for tutors, textbooks, internet access and other supports. As written, the program could also fund tuition at a private school, though former Rep. Marcus Brandon said that's not the point to have students changing schools.
"Anything that can help them bring their grades back up to par," Brandon said Tuesday. "This bill would probably benefit more public school kids."
