Ten school districts in Santa Cruz County are ready to reopen campuses for in-person learning for almost 40,000 children.Indoor masking is one of the keys to keeping everyone safe from the delta variant and there are some other safety measures that are implemented.Kristina Quilici has two children in the Santa Cruz City School District. One is in elementary school the other attends middle school."I'm hoping it to be as close to back to normal as possible for the kids and hopefully we won't get any creepy outbreaks," Quilici said. The 10 school districts in Santa Cruz County and seven private schools are ready to reopen campuses for in-person learning to 47,000 children. The mandatory indoor mask rule will continue to be part of the new normal for K-12th graders.COVID-19 testing will be available on all campuses and cleaning and disinfecting will be done daily. Next week educators will open vaccination clinics for children between 12 and 18 years of age.More than 50% of students between the ages of 12-18 have already been fully vaccinated. And 60% have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine."We're hoping to continue to work on increasing those numbers as school starts. We're launching multiple vaccine clinics at different locations; North, Mid-County and South county. Our hope is to get as many young people vaccinated because we know that's the single most important thing," said Dr. Faris Sabbah, Santa Cruz County Office of Education Superintendent. In the Santa Cruz City School District counselors are available for students to help get them through any anxiety they may experience."I think, have that space, share that with others to have students and to have students know that they're not alone and I think we can move forward from there," said Steve Perez, Mission Hill Middle School Counselor. There are no plans to offer distance learning, however, each district must provide students with an independent study program if requested."We know there are some parents who are not choosing to send their children back for in-person learning and are looking for independent study option but that is really a small minority," Sabbah said. For now, some parents feel their children will be safe heading back to the classroom this fall."I feel Safe. I feel Good with my kids going to school," Quilici said. The vaccination sites for children will open this coming Monday. They will have two locations per day.Students can pre-register at sccoe.link/studentvax.Upcoming clinics:Aug. 9: Mid County and South County Options2-7 p.m. - Branciforte Middle School Multi-Purpose Room - 315 Poplar Ave., Santa Cruz2-7 p.m. - Sequoia High School Outside Basketball Court - 229 Green Valley Road, FreedomAug. 15: North County and South County Options11 a.m. - 4 p.m. - San Lorenzo Valley High School - 7155 Highway 9, Felton11 a.m. - 4 p.m. - Pajaro Valley High School - 500 Harkins Slough Road, Watsonville
