State Superintendent Karen Salmon on Tuesday asked that teachers, school staff and child care professionals are prioritized alongside front-line health care workers as Maryland begins to distribute the COVID-19 vaccine.
In a letter to Dr. Jinlene Chan, the acting deputy secretary of public health services at the Maryland Department of Health, Salmon said the vaccine was critical for a return to full or hybrid instructional models.
"Prolonged school closures have resulted in our children experiencing diminished academic achievement and social-emotional distress,” Salmon said. “We care about all of our education and child care professionals, many of whom have continued to work on the frontline throughout the pandemic, and we are requesting that they be prioritized for the COVID-19 vaccine in the earliest stages of distribution to essential employees.”
