Salem State faculty furloughed until Saturday
Faculty union says temporary lay off unnecessary as university captures relief windfall
Wicked Local
In the first of two weeks of mandatory furloughs, Salem State University’s roughly 300 faculty and librarians are temporarily laid off until Saturday, March 20.
The second furlough week for members of the local Massachusetts State College Association will come after the 2021 commencement ceremonies in May.
The university is using the two-week furloughs to achieve $3.3 million in cost savings to, in part, avert job loss and address what Salem State President John Keenan has characterized as existing structural challenges exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
