all right, while the Russell Wilson to the New Orleans Saints Rumors have been fun to cover two mayors chiming in on the topic. A lot of national shows wanting to discuss what Russell Wilson could look like with not only the Saints but the other teams that he could potentially be traded to if he actually gets to the point of demanding a trade out of the Pacific Northwest, the Saints, the Bears, the Cowboys in the Raiders. Let's move past all that for the time being, since that is still a little bit of fantasy land. So to say, in reality, we are expecting Drew Brees to retire. Taysom Hill is under contract. Sean Payton has said that he wants to. He wants the team to resign. Jameis Winston will be a free agent later this month, joining us now to talk more about the New Orleans Saints. All things black and gold over the next few minutes. But we start with the quarterbacks. Our good friend Mike Triplett from ESPN. Mike, Is there a door Number three. I talked about Derek Carr. Kirk Cousins. Could the Saints explore trades for those guys? Bringing Teddy Bridgewater back is a popular topic in some social media circles. I like Taysom Hill a lot. I like Jameis Winston. I see the potential. Just your thoughts on the Saints' quarterback situation. Specifically, Is there a door number three, so to say, because those two guys, Taysom and James, are still a bit unproven when it comes to starting and having success, they should look at every door we're talking about quarterback in the NFL. Um, and I think Sean Payton had a good line for it, he said. Were in the quarterback business. Now they should look at every draft tricks. He's been saying that for four or five years. They've been looking at quarterbacks in the draft for the last five years. They've been looking at opportunities in free agency. They hopped on Jamis Winston when they saw an opportunity last year, because that's what the Saints? No, If you have an NFL team and you don't have a quarterback, that is your only objective is finding a quarterback and probably finding two or three options at the position. So, yes, they will consider all those options. When we talked about it, I know you were high on Derek Carr when we had that conversation and you suggested maybe Kirk Cousins Or, you know, maybe somebody who hasn't had success but would have more success in this situation, which is totally valid. Uh, in comparing it to to Drew Brees in 2000 and 61 Not everybody saw that coming, but I think what you get in Jamis, Winston and Taysom Hill is you have a bar. Um, Shawn Watson and Russell Wilson are up here. But you know, now you don't have to necessarily think about Mitch Stravinsky or Nick Foles or Andy Dalton and Derek Carr and Kirk Cousins. You know, Do you want to give up a first round pick to maybe be a little better than Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill? I I just think all of a sudden a lot of those scenarios get thrown out where it would cost a lot of money and a lot of draft capital to maybe only be a little better than Winston and Hill, and I think they genuinely look. They know those guys are proven answers, but I think they're genuinely high on both of them, as they should be. There's a lot of potential in both those Mike. Let's focus now on Jamis Winston and Taysom Hill. Look, I am Team Taysom for full disclosure. Taysom Hill did do a segment here at W. D s u T V. He was a Saint's analyst during the 2019 football season, but I still personal affinity aside. Believe in Taysom Hill, the quarterback I've bought in to what Sean Payton was saying. But there's a lot of hate out there regarding Taysom Hill becoming a starting quarterback. He is a polarizing figure. Jamis Winston. Sean Payton is talking up a lot this offseason. We know James has a ton of potential. We saw what he was able to do at Florida State, a number one overall pick in the draft. When he's good, he's good. But when he's bad, he's been bad. That's why he had no real takers last offseason and he came on a cheap deal to the New Orleans Saints. Do you think the Saints won Taysom or Jamous to win the job? I think it should be tasting, but maybe it's Jamous. It's gonna be a competition during the off season. Maybe the best battle we've seen. Fair to say in in recent Saints memory. Yeah, well, look, First of all, I hope we have some semblance of I'm guessing we're not gonna have OTAs and minicamp in in May and June, but an actual training camp and maybe a preseason game or two. Here I am hoping to see a preseason game, but we didn't really get to see much of Jameis Winston, but 12 practices where he was splitting reps. Um, the Saints didn't get to see much more than that. So if we're talking about a QB competition, I wonder what will even look like. But I do think they would want James to win that for two reasons. I think he has the higher ceiling, then Taysom Hill. And if Jamie's wins it, then Taysom Hill can still play the Taysom Hill role on the offense. So there's a couple of reasons why, why you would hope and give Jamis Winston every opportunity to win that job. But I am with you on the Taysom Hate, um, if they decided to go with him if Jamie's signed elsewhere, if Taysom won the battle because he looked great this summer, I think there's a formula where you can win a lot of games with tasting held quarterback, and I was actually surprised and a little disappointed. The Saints didn't use his legs more when he was at quarterback. He got a lot of trouble when he stood back there in the pocket trying to stay there too long instead of taking off Rennick. He can obviously throw the ball well. Is the first or second read is available, and if it's not, he should take off running. The only problem with that theory is I think you get hurt the way he runs. I've never seen him slider run out of bounds. He, like he plays quarterback on the line. But I think if you really dedicated yourself to making your starting quarterback, you can have some success there. But I'm going to paint. Jamous is the front runner, and I think the Saints would probably want James to to earn that job. All right, Mike, let's move on from the quarterbacks, even though we could talk about that for the rest of this day and we will talk about it a lot. During the off season into training camp. The Saints have a lot of decisions to make I mean, you've got key free agents. You know, Marcus Williams, Trey Hendrickson, guys that are gonna need new contracts. Ryan Ram check and Marshawn Lattimore that have played their way into big deals. The Saints have a lot to worry about other than the quarterback position. They may be laughing at the media, saying, We've got our quarterback situation figured out. Best man wins the job. Taste them, James. We got other things to figure out. They have a lot to deal with this offseason, Correct? I wrote about that this week. I said, You know, we're heading toward free agency and guys they have to sign this year Hendrickson, Williams, Jameis, Winston or let go. But I completely agree with you. It's the three guys who are scheduled to become free agents next year that are the major decisions facing this team because you need to decide now if you are going to pay Marshawn Lattimore nearly $20 million a year on a multi year deal. Same with Ryan. Ram check. Same with Theron Armstead. And if you're not, you better be prepared for a Maybe they'll hold out this year. Um, and if you're never going to pay them. Maybe you want to trade them right now because we've seen him do that with Jimmy Graham. We've seen him do it with Brandon cooks. You would get caps savings that you need also get really premier draft picks for those guys. So I'm not saying they should get rid of any of those guys, but I think they need to decide now what they're going to do with all three Mike before we go. One quick question not to put you on the spot, but that's what I'm gonna do. One surprise move. Maybe this offseason that no one's talking about or that we aren't talking enough about that. You could see happening. Well, I think we just talked about it. I think the big blockbuster surprised move would be trading Martian Lattimore or trading, uh, to run Armstead, I guess. Ryan Ram check. I think it's gonna be hard to extend all three of those guys. The more minor surprises would be. Maybe they let go of a Emmanuel Sanders or Latavius Murray or generous Jenkins. I don't think they'll do any of those things, but I don't see how you can resign everybody and keep everybody. I think there's somewhere where somebody's gotta go. Either either a surprise release or a surprise trade. At least one. All right. He is Mike Triplett from ESPN. Mike, thank you very much. Great insight, as always.
