MASHPEE — After hearing concerns from residents about drivers speeding and pedestrians competing for space with vehicles, the Mashpee Board of Selectmen voted Monday to change the speed limit for Monomoscoy Road from 30 to 25 miles per hour.
“In recent years, the vehicle traffic and road occupancy on Monomoscoy Road, a main thoroughfare, have reached critical levels,” Timothy Martin, president of the Monomoscoy Island Improvement Association, wrote in a letter to Town Manager Rodney Collins. “This past summer, safety issues emerged that now confront the safety of all pedestrians on the Island.”
The speed limit on the marsh causeway is currently 25 miles per hour, but drivers have been allowed to speed up to 30 mph once they arrive on the island, Martin wrote. The entire length of Monomoscoy Road is narrow and without any pedestrian walkway option.
