Russian President Vladimir Putin held a telephone conversation with Armenian Prime Minister Pashinyan on 20 September. The two sides discussed the situation in the Nagorno-Karabakh region. Putin welcomed the agreement on a comprehensive cessation of military operations reached with the active participation of Russian peacekeepers. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, war broke out between Azerbaijan and Armenia over the ownership of the Inna Karabik region. Although the two countries reached a comprehensive ceasefire agreement in 1994, they have been in a state of hostility over the Nagorny Karabakh issue.
