no one was actually watching so the bigger question i have is. for american viewers the argument that you don't want commentary that you want a straight news when you are given that you don't watch it so is that actually what you really want that's yeah that's the that's the tragedy in the room isn't that is that we're so can i think it's because we're so conditioned as a society now to believe that when you watch 2 people fighting each other that somehow that's how we should take in information and then that's kind of been slowly chipped away because you got to remember that the one of the big reasons the . news went bad or went south of is actually 60 minutes because 60 minutes shows that you could make ratings and you could get ad buys through news are going to remember 60 minutes and that drove the whole the cost of shares up almost rigid originally most corporations so they were it's ok we'll take a loss on the news we don't care if nobody watches it we're ok because it's it's a public service that and i a think that one of the other issues that we're seeing particularly in the news nation case is that you had bill shine who was known for his leadership as a box executive also some other cheating things that happened there but then moved on to the top administration and then the white house he is somebody who has an obvious partisan bent you say that it's clear it's evident hiring him even though he's a consultant and doesn't actually have an executive team title still shows where next nation is going yeah and one to the problem is too is that we are such a polarized kind of tribalistic society now when it comes to our information and how we get it that the moment you suddenly lose half your audience because if they see that name attached then suddenly it's like oh well i was going to be all conservative all day long i'm not you know that every liberal or everybody left wing they're going to like i can't trust that you know and independents too because once you get that stay in a fox it's interesting though when you look at it when you mention as well how cold it is like decimated online and then you have these giant mergers like we need more corporate mergers but this one between huff post and buzz feed you know again that's one of the things that just bothers me not only for journalists out there but also for people because the more you see these can go on. or it's merge the less avenues of news that we did because it was controlled by still many you know just a few companies and you're absolutely correct and that was one of the things that when the a merger was initially announced people were pushing back against because they knew that this will look very different they knew that they were more than likely going to be some major cuts on the horizon and that the voice of the writers the voice of the authorship was going to change so they had a very strong pushback against it in large part the argument was hey digital media is going in a different direction we're having crazy fierce competition again the ad buys are very difficult with facebook and google basically having the entire market and so what are you going to do. and what i'm curious to is is you know there's been a lot of heavy calls in our group that we need unions in the news business and we need you know the existing unions need to be brought up in things like what has been the union response to these massive layoffs well it depends on the media company but when we're talking about huff post and what we're seeing with busby the unions have been very serious about trying to issue some sort of protection so they work very hard to make sure that workers aren't just you know thrown thrown out at the door so that they have initiated severance pay but they're also working towards again making this a more equitable workplace for those who still happen to be there because one of the issues that happened but also at huff post was that minority writers and minorities who are also in production staff weren't necessarily getting their top billing they weren't getting pay equity at all so that's one of the things that they were surprising to hear that when you have 2 companies that kind of pride themselves on the liberal on a very progressive belief system but they don't practice with that a little chill back there and you think. right conservatives seem hell bent on ignoring all of that and going full throttle and further isolating the trans community president joe biden has signaled his support for federal funding for trans health care to address the nec what he's dismantling housing discrimination aimed at the community supporting transgender military service and withdrawing from a controversial connecticut law suit to trump administration advocated for. the connecticut lawsuit seeks to ban transgender athletes from participating in girls' high school sports the lawsuit was initially filed last year by sister gender runners who argued that they lost their competitive advantage in state titles athletic scholarships and other opportunities if they were to compete against athletes who are male. there is a war against transgender girls waged by republican state leaders as well south dakota governor christie know is set to sign a bill that restricts transgender women from competing on high school and college girls and women's teams in arkansas all the state house panel advanced legislation banning gender confirming health care for minors this measure would prohibit doctors from providing gender confirming hormone treatment to minors or even referring them to other providers a huge setback for transgender youth all in all over 24 states have introduced bills targeting trans people 16 states have bills that would criminalize didn't care for trained youth that include 12 therapy in puberty blocking medication joining us now is taylor chandler was a transgender health coordinator for us helping us people into living and welcome. thank you for having me guys. well taylor as a trainer advocate writer and line service provider what are your thoughts on the aggressive bills aimed at limiting trans women and girls from participating in sports and what do you think this signals why is the right criminalizing gender. you know i feel like through history there's always been somebody that's been on there and conservatives i call on christian republicans. and at this point there's no evidence to back up what they're fighting against there's not this mad domination of sports by trans individuals never has been it's very rare that someone of trans experience is even in in the higher levels of competition where they're winning yet this is the target. so they're in essence in my mind saying it's ok for us to be in sports as long as we don't win which seems ridiculous to. i'm not sure where this comes from. but i know that on the local level the facts are being thrown out because like you said all those states that have bills in front of the legislature to limit restrict access to public spaces that are or what they define as women as well as competition in sports under title 9. these are going to have far reaching into effect and we saw this start over in the united kingdom where the court system actually is now involved in gender affirming care for people under i believe at 13 and so in order to have puberty blockers or any kind of medication intervention or surgery it has to be deemed necessary by a court now not just a doctor or a health care professional. you know you've spoken about the need for expanded access to hormone therapy gender affirming care and puberty blocking medication particularly for the you there as a ton of angsty on this topic because you've got a lot of naysayers who don't believe young people have the ability to decide their gender or they're just confused or whatever they're going through a phase what do you say to them and why is advancing access to hormone therapy and puberty medication such a priority and why is it important for trans you have in order to get these things and to have access to these and very important procedures. i mean 1st and foremost gender affirming care is life or death you take that away from someone that's young going through 'd gender identity conflict and you will see the suicide rates go through the roof. you know at at this point it it boggles my mind it really really does. for me personally and how i see it is that gender affirming care to young age prevents you know all of what we're facing now to go on this care as a youth to transition living your truth you don't masculinized you don't go through these processes that 18 if they pass these laws you would have to undo them all. and with title not i it almost puts trans youth in a situation of being outed because so many lives still they go to school their schoolmates do not know what's between their legs and i would i pose this to the op the audience the viewers do you look between your legs to know who you are i've never done that and what happens if you are in an accident your lower extremities were gone. no longer have a gender you know if if i took your genitals away you wouldn't automatically think you're a woman if i put your genitals on to me she wouldn't automatically be a man no one agenda five's who they are by what's between their legs and you know who's going to do this litmus test you know with if i'm in a hospital have gone through a rape and i'm saying i want same sex nurses while what if i think there's something and i'm wrong in my going to make them drop trout and show me their genitalia and in my own expert on genitalia to know if it's genitalia from birth or from a doctor's office great point it's really a great point and tailor you know the bite administration is no doubt a lot more friendly than the troubled ministration but do you think they're going far enough you know the top administration appointed judges that had anti il to miti bents they allowed for religion to be used on the basis to discriminate against the community and even gave adoption agencies the green light to deny. couples that ability to become parents what are concrete policies that you expect from the white administration that can reverse course from what we saw from trump but also address the concerns that all going concerns about. i mean right now where we're there i want the equality act passed and i want all of these radical feminist groups that are popping up across the country that reality stonewall was started by black and brown trans women black pride came out of black and brown bodies at the forefront black women and cheer we are all these years later and you know we think of pride and it's run in large part by white organizations when in reality it is rooted in black pride and obviously you take the situations that are facing trans people across the all demographics but at the end of the day it's still black and brown trans people that are facing the moron of all of what's happening and not getting the services and care and black trans women are still being murdered at alarming numbers and to me it's not even necessarily a transition that goes back to as a country we need to value black lodz we most definitely do it's a human issue at the end the love of our
