Continues. Good afternoon well can you watching our see international now in america people are waking up there to find their president ial election race is stuck on a knife edge the results are hanging in the balance in a few key states and as it stands right now joe biden has a narrow lead with 224 Electoral College votes compared to Donald Trumps 213 the victor will be the 1st to reach 270 biden claimed overnight on cost of victory went 1. 00 step further saying that hes already won and is threatening legal action to get more on this now were joined by murray gas if hes in and also with the market he joins us from new york so lets go to karen. As i said waiting for us in new york. Hanging in the balance not all the votes are in still everything to play for. Well at this point its down to a number of key states it was widely anticipated that the morning after the election in the United States we would not yet have the results and that is what occurred at this point we are waiting for results from pennsylvania michigan georgia North Carolina wisconsin and new vadra and it is those states that will make the determination announced so far in the states that have been called joe biden has a lead with 238 electoral votes trumps got only to 213 both candidates though still have a clear possible path to victory. Now the next expected results are in wisconsin where over 97 percent of the ballots have been counted so we are awaiting the wisconsin results that should be coming pretty soon its only a matter of time however there are other states where its going to be much longer pennsylvania is delayed due to a Court Decision that required that postal facilities that are processing mail and ballots be inspected so because of that pennsylvanias results are going to be delayed as well nevada has announced that they wont be giving results until thursday so nevada also up for grabs we wont be hearing the results until thursday so at the moment the country is on edge its not clear who the winner is its still possible that the election could go either way we heard what was said by both candidates and 87 electoral votes are up for grabs at this point now we know that there were clashes in the streets of washington d. C. In the early hours of the morning people were injured people were taken to the hospital now around the country there have been some interesting results in local races for example the state of mississippi for a long time it had a flag a state flag based on the Confederate Flag but that was voted down the residents of mississippi mrs. He voted to get rid of that flag get a new state flag that doesnt have the legacy of the confederacy furthermore oregon the u. S. State of oregon became the 1st state to legalize heroin and cocaine that is certainly a Significant Development in american politics so some interesting results in local races around the country still waiting for the official final results from a number of states to determine who will be in the white house for the next 4 years as was widely anticipated we dont yet have the results its the morning after and the country is still waiting for an answer this is what we all thought might happen and it has happened ok thanks kelly that was kind of in there in new york for us lets talk now with more gas if hes in the studio no doubt is are we hearing then nevada you know its not going to claim were not going to. Result of its vote in pennsylvania is delayed to. Inspect things have gone so for fall that was a court ruling it seems extraordinary that. Either candidate can complain theyve won well this is this is what the problem is its all this waiting all this county tallying it is its straggling things out so you have hundreds of thousands of people out. Disappearing disappearing all of the country you have you have violence you have none of that kind of that. Now the kind it has and who is to concede since who both of them are now claiming you know and telling their supporters that we go to win this and considering how out fried have bizarre how little patience there is live among the public how both sides 1 more and more confident that their guy has won you know this this is a doing the one and the business is doing america and thieves this is doing a lot of damage to the country that is already divided and both candidates saying they have cause to believe theyve. I think that theyre going to win this. Night we believe were on track to win a selection were going to win this thank you thank you thank you. We were getting ready to win this election frankly we did win this. We will win this and. We already have. And also as far as he can see he is concerned could well be a very lengthy legal challenge to any result well look there were many scenarios that looked at in the lead up to the election the polls the polls were wrong i mean they had a blowout Biden Victory obviously with florida especially trump clinton that that went out the window right out the window so what we were left with was a bunch of worst Case Scenarios one of them so if i the cabinet what out right you know it would have been done and over now that could have contested. It would have the election would have been done sort of we have a situation where both sides are now claiming victory and theres this weight this weight is as i said it isnt doing america the fabric of american society. Any favors all the ugly all the all the dirt all the bitterness it is now coming out you know peoples nerves peoples nerves theres theres going to be insults and im surprised there hasnt been more of what weve seen so far the candidates now the latest biden saying that hell challenge any any trump lawsuit to the to the Supreme Court you know this is a game where the psychological game where theyre trying to threaten the other side leave themselves open to a lot of options going into the future if its too close if its too close to force a recount to delay to challenge any potential ruling. We want the law to be used in a proper manner so well be going to the u. S. Supreme court we want all voting just. We dont want them to find any ballots at 4 oclock in the morning and add them to the list ok. The president s statement trying to shut down counting of julie cost ballots was outrageous unprecedented and incorrect a naked effort to take away democratic rights never before has a president sought to strip americans of their voice it will not happen counting will continue until every duty cost vote is counted. Weve seen the tension have me on the streets just in the last few hours 4 people stopped outside the White House Well exactly across america still over not protests not as large as you would expect during the day but you know as i said people who support biden people who support trump theyre out in the streets and they believe that their cabinet is the one that should be in the white house and theres theres very little middle ground America Today is divided like never before in living memory in living memory the v. V. That they have so many differences and suitable to agree on the direction the United States look at the black lives protests back to its mouth that deal of protest over the summer that they could then continuing now by the way b. L. M. Chance being heard in American Cities for people stab outside the white house and theyre still counting the votes and magine what potentially could happen if you can do that you know a disagreeable cabinet what the problem is everybody believes that their net think their candidate should be in the white house and there is there is no acceptance no recognition of the other sides opinions and this is what weve seen throughout the entirety of the summer protests and violence and where you know dialogue fails its all thats left. And this is where we are at now with the waiting the waiting in a situation election where each side is willing to take it out that theyre adding to the nerves physically on their opponents on people wearing different you know different colored hats with different names written on their t. Shirts and this is why the situation is so dangerous america is polarized like never before with silly little middle ground with so little overlap in the beliefs and interests of both sides america is changing it is evolving at a breakneck speed we see this in the way that people have voted against all polls against all predictions we see that america their values peoples values peoples ideology it is changing and evolving and as my colleague donald. Reports you know theres this new predicting which way this will go. It was all high hopes and big promises back in 2016 when donald trump took his place in the white house the nation was already divided by race gender class you name it and the country needed a hero now its time for america to get behind a division have to get together. Republicans and democrats and independents across this nation i say it is time for us to come together as one United People turned out trump never came to be that knight in shining armor. 20 twentieths president ial election seasons looked more like an all out war on the streets more than anything mishandling of the Pandemic Response and the economic crisis but most significant was the brutal killing of george floyd that sparked outrage across the nation and even calls to defund the police altogether. And instead of trying to unite people americas dividing lines became part of both parties political strategies on the one hand biden and the democrats sold themselves as allies of the socalled peaceful protests wets lets be honest were not so peaceful problem. Peacefully protest. Not a bad way to dip your toes into the more radical left and black voter pool. But on the other hand trump who decided to play the tough guy calling anti racism protesters vandals and anarchists trump sent federal troops to put down uprisings in cities a move that won support from a number of Police Unions and people who didnt want to see their white picket fence neighborhoods ruined now the law and order doctrine also embolden some of trumps more radical supporters so that seeing armed right wing militias and anti for freely Walking Around the streets of American Cities became a new reality and one of both candidates done to fix all this point the finger is also what it is using raese whats going on and he doesnt want to see a lone order because you cant because you lose his radical left supporters. Stand back and stand by but ill tell you what ill tell you what somebody has got to do something about the left because this is not a right as we know it is a direct this is. Not what its about this is the radical left would you she was on both sides of the political spectrum weve got armed groups white nationalists proud boys right wing militias and the whole bunch so what exactly will happen when the election is over well everyone just sit down and decide to accept the results. Now lets get some reaction from dr robert gates he joins us hes from Lancaster University department of sociology and also author of the Trump Presidency journalism and democracy so we appreciate your thoughts a softening thanks for coming on robert firstly all the poems were expecting i wouldnt say an easy win but biden when were not saying that is that surprised you. Well youre absolutely right i mean the pollsters you know up until earlier this week so for sure this was going to be maybe not a landslide but a very definitive win a for joe biden side thought that it was going to be a definitive win for donald trump so what is surprising here to a lot of people is that it is so close of an election that despite all that you just showed on the screen and that that we know about has been going on in the last 4 years in the United States that people want more of that is surprising to 2 not just pollsters and journalists but to some average citizens that what weve been seeing on the streets of the United States is the way we want american democracy to look for the next 4 years what you think is plain cyclists then what all of the main issues that have brought brought back into this. Yeah so i think there really over ones the ones that we can identify have to do with issues of racism in the United States as a race based nation categorized as based on race just like in the u. K. It seems to be based on class and race is also connected to that so immigration and race issues are things that are that are really there for term supporters but also it has to do with the fundamental values of who and what america is. And what joe biden stands for and i think a lot some people were confused about maybe when joe biden would bring to the table. The thought that maybe he was a socialist. That he was just another broch obama something that they didnt want in in the white house so i think that you know biden probably needed to do a little bit more to explain a bit of his his positions he probably took it a little bit too soft on donald trump for a little bit too long doesnt he still get come out with a win but its not that decisive win thats going to help us understand really where the country situated as one. Time played a part in this to you think the people have surprised perhaps the poll says because theyve decided that trumps economic policies and perhaps trying to open up the economy would be better for then. Yeah absolutely i mean one of the things that donald trump has brought to politics and in recent memory is the notion of capitalism again right i mean so every president talks about the economy they use unemployment as an indicator even though its a bit of a fallacy of an indicator of how well a nation or a community is doing they bring those things to the table every election and throughout their presidencies but donald trump. You know represents the American Dream even though the richest person weve never met he presents himself as a business person he is a business person someone whos been on television who has money coming in every single month and has his name on buildings including you know right over Michigan Avenue in chicago big gold letters for donald trump and i think for a lot of people that represents how they too could make it. In some form of prosperity you know joe biden maybe talks about hope and talks about human rights but he doesnt maybe talk enough about how his presidency would put food on the table and i think that thats one of the major divides between things that thats not thats less overt right how how my going to be more prosperous and whos going to help me get there not everybody everybody. Everybody has cast their votes and thats still being counted but i mean this could go on for a long time couldnt it. Was nevada said it was and that was the result and. Then well have the how prospect of a legal challenge perhaps going to the Supreme Court how would defend and in the meantime what will happen on the streets of america. Well its you know this is reminiscent of 2000 when that election did go to the u. S. Supreme court in george bush was awarded the president s despite the outcomes of the popular vote and other indicators so we could see it move in that direction people are concerned about the stacking of federal judges that might be making some decisions about ballots across the country and certainly you know 3 which is a huge number 3 justices from one term on the Supreme Court concerns about a stat stacking might might help too this is going to go on for at least the rest of this week just to get the numbers released and i believe them recounts the next question yeah well i mean the big difference i was in that role but between now and 20 years ago i was the violence missing on straight. Ill go can say graciously accounts can you see it happening one side graciously conceding defeat. Well i dont think wed ever see donald trump conceding defeat and if you did do that he would do it in his own sort of his own sort of way and that still makes him either a martyr of some sort joe biden. May i mean you know the democrats using the court system in this in this way seems a little bit strange to me at least i mean thats certainly not the tone and tenor that theyve had this as long as donald trump has over the last few weeks in the last month or so talking about the courts but theyre out there theyre using the legal system and joe biden has to instead of maybe just common for patience a calm meeting is to show a little bit more about what kind of president he would be in in that culture of violence and calls for anxiety but to to stand up even now against donald trump because if he does lose if biden does lose hes still going to have to be a part of bringing the Democratic Party back together in opposing policies to the degree that they want to within the Democratic Party if donald trump goes on for another 4 years right now if that happens im thinking from a more of a global perspective many people got an interest in this countries around the world not just people in america but breaks it is about to happen what has happened but its about to go through in the u. K. If biden for example gets elected how does that alter things because everybody certainly in the u. K. Were hoping the good try to deal with america pretty much pending that on getting elected but what sort of things could happen if biden gets elected. Yeah i think you know the trump position is privatization of the National Health Service Concerns issues of culture into other privatization of other spaces with joe biden i think he is looking at a much more Global Community has a lot of work to do thats beyond just bricks and he he would have to you know get the u. S. Back into the World Health Organization and maybe get back into some treaties in Environmental Policies that donald trump removed the United States from some bracks its going to be one of a puzzle of things for joe biden on an International Level on the fascinating thing here is that the International Level is not seemingly on americans minds theyre not pressing and asking either of these these candidates or these potential president s to talk about that certainly you know joe biden would bring very different feel in negotiations with the u. K. But i think he would try and smooth things over with donald trump would benefit the United States probably in his in his relationship with a u. K. Outside of the e. U. And so it would be very different tasks one softer a little bit harder the other. We dont really have an indication that they havent been pressed on those questions enough for us to get a real good indication so you dont think perhaps that if biden was elected it might weaken the negotiating position with the e. U. With them im tell you that some sort of trying to. Well it might i mean they you know if some of this has to do with who theyre going to surround themselves with right i mean so its not just the president sitting at tables negotiating things its the presidency and its institutions around the president and so if joe biden gets himself some hardliners right which may not be in his his public personality and for sort of that hes been putting out there we could see some some hard lining negotiating going on at the table that you know just review in opposite direction from where donald trump would take it but right now i dont know that we even have an indication of how joe biden would operate in an International Sphere being so concentrated on the domestic issues and thats a really and so thats an interesting question watch this space for how Joe Biden Mike kandel and International Presidency just on that main highway the day with china do you think. Yeah you know i dont think that joe biden would be getting on any planes to go to meet with any leaders of some nations that maybe donald trump would try but i do think that hes going i think it is going to be a softer touch i think hes going to go back to iraq obama type of diplomacy but you know we dont know if joe biden has that persona and that feel we have tested him enough on the International Level weve tested donald trump and some people have been excited about his approaches and others not particularly in the constitution with china over economics in Technology Information but we havent tested joe biden hes been out of the circle for a while you know he was Vice President and then kind of went away for a bit im not criticizing joe biden im just saying that we havent seen him on that platform and so this is a vast need in question that americans probably havent even asked themselves about how how he would go about stitching together unity and connections across the United States when the fabric of the u. S. Is itself falling apart it is fascinating isnt it robert we could talk a lot longer but weve not propagate take a blanket. Thank you time and i thank. Ok well im going to take you over to the big screen now because weve got a map to try and explain exactly what is going on in the United States at the moment 1st. Of red and you might think that trump is pretty much won this one more states but biden actually has more electoral votes at this stage which is what counts big population states like california over here actually gave him a lot of votes 55 electoral votes and so far biden has 238223270 the magic number needed for victory however a few states as we have been saying still not have counted all of their ballots there in gray. Which you can see but one of the key battleground states neris is in the way in which you can for example. Bidens favor. For there and who knows when all this will be. Suspended its. Pennsylvania court ruling there is suspended counting and of course weve got all the legal challenges that could follow to you but theres still plenty to talk about plenty more analysis to come well do that in half and. Join me every. Time im sure. Im sure ill see you. I dont even know if the wife. Well. I dont think if the phone. Call up top that. Oh my. What 6 6.
