Out this day. And it gets written. Trail. When so many find themselves worlds apart. Just to look for common ground. Greetings and sally. Controversy has erupted here in washington d. C. After legendary watergate Journalist Bob Woodward released select audi your recordings of interviews he conducted with u. S. President donald trump for his new book entitled rain which the interviews feature the president back in february acknowledging and understanding the very real dangers of the covert 1000 pandemic saying quote it goes through the air bob thats always tougher than the touch you just breathe the air and thats how its passed its also more deadly than your you know your even most strenuous flu. Yet just days later at a Campaign Speech in South Carolina trump called criticism of his handling of the virus a hoax and went on to downplay its dangers announcing to all there are 35000 people on average die each year from the flu did he would know that 35000. 00 thats a lot of people. Could go 2100008 could be 27000. 00 they say usually a minimum of 27. 00 goes up 2100000 people a year die and so far we have lost nobody to coronavirus in the United States. Then later in march trump admitted to woodward that when it came to letting the public know about the mortal dangers of the pandemic he stated quote i wanted to always play it down i still like it play i still like playing it down because i dont want to create a panic so youve got to let all that sink in everything we witnessed in the spring everything that came out of the white house and all that you got to let that sink in for a 2nd vet is the president now hearing these calls because this is the president of the United States admitting to lying to the American People many of whom are his deval followers just how truly dangerous cope with 19 is i wonder how many of the now 200000 dead could have been saved had the president stood acted president ial and not played things down and told people to go back to work. You see my friends that that is an Impeachable Offense lying to the American People about their health and safety that is an Impeachable Offense not russia gates none of this other garbage that has been told that weve been told is impeachable it is also an incredibly Important News story but its not just an Important News story today mere months from election day no no no no it was also a vitally important story yesterday back in february march and april and that is why many are now wondering why bob woodward essentially sat on this story for over 5 months in an article in substract journalist david sirota points out that history should never forget that americas most famous journalist had a rare chance to sound an alarm about the pandemic the country was facing and instead chose to stay silent so he could berber preserve his access to the white house and sell a few more books to a nation locked down in quarantine. This begs the question are we being too cynical or too harsh mr woodward or is he just as guilty as donald trump for putting personal gain over the people in the time of the pandemic lets find out as we start watching the hawks. In a city. That is so you. See this is this. State see a. Great city desolate systemic dissent says so which. Brings up the old. Welcome everyone to watching the hawks i am a rover im of the chicago so major that is kind of the question the the sub question that has come up this week is you know should would were have released this information back in the spring at the height of the corona Virus Outbreak and scare and when it was really you know we were all on lockdown. When people were trying to. Figure out what to do next. You know should you have released this information but as opposed to so i like how you pose the question i do understand the some of the pushback and accordance with the timeline of him releasing the information but one of the other issues i find and a greater one i think is that. At the time we have to remember that there wasnt a White House Task force on coronavirus that was done yet there was some conflicting information about how to protect yourself from corona virus and i think that for him it was probably looking at the fact that theyre americans honestly didnt know what what they were going to be doing but we also didnt have a lot of guidance from the white house at that time either so i think that there was a little bit of that in addition to as you know there is Politics Around this as well he wants to sell books he wants to get attention but beyond that i think that there is this there was a belief that trumps own doing would do him so and what weve seen thus far as regardless of what trump does or says in this white house he has a quote like following that is going to believe in him regardless and i think that its interesting to note but also in america we have something that we call the october surprise or you know it often happens at election day and theres this big bomb drop that is news to change peoples mind to possibly you know push them towards a different candidate and i think that donald trump what weve seen in the past few days with scandal after scandal is that his october surprise came early did it really did its funny because the other 2 were spies references back to carter and reagan and you know ever since carter and reagan back in like in 1000. 980 its always a risk become like you said a staple of american politics woodward told the Washington Post that he didnt have any signed agreement or formal embargoed with you know with trump borders or his administration to roll back their conversations until the book was published in response to the accusations that have been kind of leveled at him by very credible journalist saying hey we could have used this information when donald especially in the later months not. Everywhere youre marj like youre saying you know when we didnt really know what was happening release the public didnt know really what was going on but then like once that kind of became this fight over should people go to where mass should people go back to work and you had all one side of the country in a lot of the big you know conservative conservative columnists and political leaders all saying no no no it would be we dont need to wear masks are all weve got to get back to work and donald trump saying as much thats when people are kind of saying you had him saying that this threat was real on tape you know and heres i want to read you what. He said the biggest problem i had which is always a problem with trump is i didnt know if it was true he went on to state that he didnt know where trump was getting his information from until may so you know hes saying look i was being a good journalist i didnt want to just run and do something right away i think thats logical and that is a good explanation on his behalf you know whether or not people fully believe it is a different story but i think that for him being someone who has busted wide open a lot of a lot of theories the things that were not only levels of impropriety but just bad judgment on behalf of elected officials in the past we also have to remember that donald trump is the present the United States and thats one of the most powerful positions on the globe so if youre going to lodge Something Like that against him you want to make sure that this thing plays out because what we have seen is President Trump get caught up before and then he goes on twitter it unravels and then its just you know him basically throwing all types of assaults on journalists i dont think bob will want to be put in that position i dont get to do that whats interesting though is that it is kind of because he waited trumps now using that as an excuse obviously weve seen him say you know hey you could have leaked this if it was so important why is it so important now david sirota wrote a really nice piece and substract kind of you know color in this argument the words put forward he he was excused by pointing out a simple fact he had the audiotape of the president United States which is newsworthy unto itself and that he concealed the tape as the perpetrator kept telling people to go out about their business kept trying to reopen the economy and kept in danger a 1000000 a lot of thats kind of. The argument that look did you put book profits over this did you put your own career over the safety of many others the same way donald trump is to me i have to kind of i got to side with the critics a word i feel like this was an important story that had you released audio of the president time may have saved lives it may have gotten the president to move his position even a little bit and i think that im not so sure what got him to move his position but i do think that it would change american behavior to hear the president flip flop and say one thing to the public and then see him Say Something entirely different in the background and allude to the fact that this is going to be a very serious pandemic and knowing you know what the potential death toll would be i think we would have seen less pushback to wearing mass less pushback to social distancing we might have seen america react differently and that would have resulted in less deaths and lesser emissions. The family of harry done a british teenager struck and killed by an automobile while on his motorcycle an accident involving u. S. Diplomat and cyclists in the United Kingdom last year followed a lawsuit here in the u. S. This week in an effort to find some kind of justice for their lost cyclist who is alleged to be a formal or possibly current cia operative is the wife of a u. S. Intelligence officer both of whom were living in england at the time of the tragedy and then led to the United States to avoid prosecution party americas alex until it has the story. It was a rude incident that left a british family heartbroken resume. Are truly amazing the wild garnering the attention in the highest echelons of government of course i have them and a huge amount of sympathy. For how youve done. This family and i can tell you that i thought either and dont rob the foreign secretary had a. Very hard to do when he drives the message home in washington that we want to see justice but how you don the and for his family in august 201919 year old harry dunn died when his motorcycle was hit by a car outside of a Us Military Base in england the automobile was being driven on the wrong side of the road by and so cool as the wife of a u. S. Diplomat 43 year old school is admitted being behind the wheel of the vehicle after being charged with dangerous driving she claimed diplomatic immunity and fled the u. K. More than a year after the incident done the family is fighting to bring security back to britain to face justice so far the extradition request has been rejected by the us having now closed the loophole the legal loophole that allowed her to escape she was the last person to escape it is absolutely clear now that the United States government does not have either a legal or moral leg to stand on the legal loophole allowed so coolest to plead the u. S. But after further discussion between the u. K. And the states moving forward family members of american diplomats can now be prosecuted in britain a small win for the dunn family who are fighting an uphill battle i dont fully with the harrys on in them than in the traits a few weeks back absolutely every shows us that the family at that level with the family would have to fight its the way we have nobody else so commit the crime such as well and kill us has done and will fray with us refusing to return to the u. K. British authorities are considering a virtual trial with the accused it of censure many feel the whole idea makes them. Of the case and are calling it a show trial meanwhile according to the dunn family there is some new hope for justice and it comes from the director of Public Prosecutions happily for us the d. P. P. Confirmed that its their view that this did not have diplomatic immunity at the time of the crash so there are legal team independent of us that form the same view in addition that this week the dunn family filed a wrongful death suit in a virginia federal courtroom just outside of washington d. C. The teenagers parents are seeking compensation and punitive damages as their fight for justice continues. Should be able to take a life i will collect for r. T. Im alex marla bitch. That is so ugly is that im sorry it just looks like to me like i did something wrong kill this kid im a runaway diplomatic immunity dont be held accountable im american im great in that sort of leads to me its like the fact that we have an administration this did buy it is also extremely questionable and you know she was definitely negligent there should be some type of criminal penalty because you killed somebody meant to walk off and still have that family grieving and just worrying about you know what type of resolution theyre going to see and it looks like a 5 from in their own country there isnt much thats going to be done and shes already here and its been back for a while i mean good for them for filing a wrongful death suit but you know come on like show some courage actually stand up and say look i may or may not should be held accountable for this i you know made a mistake whatever you want to do but stand trial at least give that family the opportunity for you to be courageous and do the right thing and say you know i will step forward will take this to trial well see how this plays out rather than like coming back here and hiding behind diplomatic move it makes me sad because it plays that american exceptionalism thing that lay we go over break laws all the time but never going to hold accountable absolutely i think the other part is this also showcases that she had a poor understanding of diplomat. Immunity because she acted as though she was never going to face any type of real penalty from start to finish from not contacting the police after she you know killed somebody to you know basically come clean here and hiding i think that she felt as though nothing was ever going to happen that she was protecting our intelligence that we would be great when it has folks like i mean theres a lot of good folks at work but. Anyway all right everybody here so we go to break remember you can also start watching dogs on demand through the brand new portable t. V. Its a. Fight every day she you meet your needs and the needs of your family. The election of congresswoman alexandria cortez sent shock waves across america not only with the youngest woman ever elected to the u. S. House of representatives but her brand of politics energized a new generation around an ex of the brit Climate Change but Climate Science and activism beating the drum for weirdness on that front isnt new for decades we see movements with implodes former Vice President al gore famously took on Climate Change with the critically acclaimed 2006 film an Inconvenient Truth a project that garnered an oscar and came on the heels of at least 4 climate books authored by gore throughout the ninetys though fanfare rose most americans were still on the fence about Climate ChangeEnvironmental Science and its place in the National Conversation after the b. P. Oil spill rapidly growing wildfires the level rise series of hurricanes and other natural disasters and of course the point water crisis what people are finally paying attention to the environment. Policies to improve our world in clean Energy Better air quality and water free from toxins and chemicals are still highly polarizing. In feb 29th teens congresswoman a causal court is championed the Green New Deal a climate proposal meant to tackle some of the greatest threats to our environment meanwhile build an economy that includes jobs designed to decrease our reliance on fossil fuels and guarantee high paying Clean Energy Employment opportunities the resolution though it drew ire from both the right and the left meanwhile gaining traction among progressive and Younger Voters so much traction that the Democratic Party primarily focused quite a bit of time on the issue during their primary even hosting a vent soley targeting each president ial came its plans to make america greener famed economist and coauthor of the book Climate Crisis and the global Green New Deal robert poland joins us now to discuss this book and whats next in the Environmental Movement welcome thank you. In an emergency a Climate ChangeClimate Science and the movement to raise awareness for issues and behaviors affecting our environment is decades old what do you think are some of the unique aspects of the modern movement that helped it gain traction and why the Climate Change crisis at its height right now. In terms of the movement i think youre absolutely right in your introduction i think young people stand ready. For a 1000000000 a congresswoman or cause you know cortez indorsing those groups energized people and activities to an extent we havent seen in a long time and greatest number 0 in sweden who then became a global figure thats young people saying you know this is our plan and you guys are just. So that it has been absolutely critical on top of it i think one of the things that a lonely c. P. M. Maybe it doesnt mean. Is that people in the us elsewhere the labor as im to embrace. A persian of the Green New Deal gradually recognize that number one that we didnt fire. And number 2 in that building a new Green Economy is actually get a big good is Good Opportunity it narrative approach decade you can protect the environment you are but you know its going to kill the Economic Growth thats has been the base of which for example through drive done this. You know these you environ vironment lets go here are well working people are supporting this increased. Working people are supporting it but yet and you see you know you see progressive Young Democrats and young people around the world pushing for not only a Green New Deal and other deals like it but its still a light. Rod here in the United States for both parties its a resolution not a bill what steps do we need to take right now to move it into a phase of actionable legislation and do you think congress is going to get behind this. Well as it happens just today. There was introduced a new bill of the prize. I myself participated in breast some of the ballot if were behind it. It was introduced by senator schumer. The Senate Minority leader and then markey who is my senator and massachusetts i sure had it on today if hes elected if the democrats take the stand and biden is elected were going to move ahead with this broad back which you braced is certainly the spirit of what is in bidens proposal on his website for green do now whether it actually happens its not going to just cover this ship but it is under fire people social people inside or but that is going to be discouraged. And criticisms a bound for the Green New Deal and you know as we spoke about earlier basically every Climate Action plan or anything around environmental policy we know that there are always naysayers does the Green New Deal do you think it goes far enough in addressing the criticism lodged against the proposal. Well if were talking about the proposal that was introduced. By stander markey congresswoman across your desk i myself and one of the critics that particular proposal i dont think it was very well thought out and it is as you noted it was was only a resolution. A dirty embrace the spirit if were going to talk about. Dear it is really transforming our energies. And creating opportunities we have to do it carefully and i think over the past year if maybe it was done to the court as marcie proposal there has been a lot of important work making here is much more credible much more serious and in my opinion yes pretty new detail it can be absolutely in. It can be the foundation for achieving a net 0 emissions economy and 13 years or less and generating a lot of Job Opportunities is effort in the process thats something that really strikes me whenever i whenever we talk about you know combating Climate Change but also green energy is to me it seems like something that could revolutionize Industrial America and really put a lot of americans at work as an economist is that what we should we cannot do that can green energy truly do that and bring in renewed this company at this countrys economy to help provide the jobs that we are so desperately in need of right now. Absolutely absolutely i mean i i you know its in our book that i thank you for noting the book. But more like it i. Just put out this thing today in congress that i did and read it in one minute and thats and ive done good. Work it dates with environmental groups and. We put out a study that was mean just 2 weeks ago or week or so before that coming out with one pro i o. And other appalachian states of course there are going to be jobs lost is by definition if were not going to earn oil call it met the gas people that have those jobs are not going to have those anymore so well. I have to establish as this central feature of the Green New DealJust Transition for all the workers and communities that are going to be negative impact and there will be that but it if we if we commit to it it will be easy to design these people into new jobs a good wages repurposed that lay in where the. Gold mines are and where the oil fields are clean that not reclaim them repurposed its been done for example pretty well right now in germany thats a great model there are some decent models in the u. S. Interesting link one decent models are decent models is general ask what they are building in or her own communities they are creating what are so called lot of energy they put a. Dollar do you think there are mo its cheaper it is today mostly right there in the community it creates yeah but it does i want to thank you so much for writing this book i ran out of time but but thank you so much for writing this book and the good work youre doing to help us come about this this this enemy that is Climate Change thank you so much mr bone thanks for having me on.
