104 people were shot 13 were killed 5 of them were children one was only 3 years old just one weekend is the United States a dangerous country when it comes to gun violence but once again lets just just look at the numbers according to a study in the american journal of medicine this one was published in 2016 if you take the total of the top 22. 00 developed countries in the entire world the United States we account for 82 percent of all the gun deaths 82 percent we also account for 90 percent of all the women that are killed with guns. All the women killed with guns 90 percent and we account for 91 percent of all children under the age of 14 killed with guns. Now a lot of you are watching this newscast you happen to live here in the United States and youre probably asking yourself come on how can that be it sounds like a war zone what youre describing there rick and certainly i watching this newscast watching you present this newscast to me i dont feel like i live in a war zone certainly not advised neighborhood not my community so heres why we looked a little deeper and we found that according to a harvard study on gun violence in america the disproportionate number of gun deaths occur not in the suburbs where maybe some of you live not in Rural America where maybe some of you live they all tend to cluster or occur in inner cities in fact 60 percent of all the firearm homicides that occur in america is 50 largest cities and the number increases within pockets inside those major cities this harvard study by the way finds it the situation has gotten progressively worse in the last 50 years from the 1960 s. To the 1970 s. But why so were going to drill down on this for you here on the news with rick sanchez where we remain committed to the concept that it is time to do news again. All right heres a list of the questions we think youll be asking tomorrow after watching our newscast today why does it happen and what could be done about chicagos gun violence Columbus Churchill now gandhi statue being threatened really. How dangerous is a new border conflict between china india and pakistan hint there are casualties all right lets start with this the numbers are troubling to say the very least. Which is why what happened in chicagos weekend is the subject of some screaming headlines that are being made from coast to coast 104 shot 13 killed 23 days here with the details to start us off is our to correspond at the top of suite. The city of chicago being played with bloodshed and broken families Chicago Police reporting the highest number of shooting victims in a single weekend this year from friday to monday morning Authorities Say 104 people have been shot 14 of those fatally 5 of those who died were minors this past fathers day weekend had more victims of gun violence but less fatalities compared to the last weekend of may thats when 85 people were shot 24 of them fatally that was reported to be the windy city as deadly as weekend in several years 5 children were among the 14 dead this weekend including a 13 Year Old Girl and a 3 year old boy both died on saturday in separate shootings the boy was reportedly shot while riding in a car with his father the toddler identified as mckay james was reportedly struck in the back just before 6 30 pm someone in a blue honda was driving behind his 27 year old fathers black s. U. V. Raimi hes the c. E. O. Of justice informed. Thank you so much of for joining us so you work with. Businesses and government leaders to help them understand whats going on this harvard study says in the last 50 years the problems only gotten worse help us understand whats going on especially in inner cities especially those of us who may not live there whats the number one reason that you would cite for this problem. First thanks for having me on i wouldnt say that theres one specific reason gun violence happens because of an intersection im also saying and in some of those include everything from a lack of access to jobs some of that sense are the challenges that people have to try to engage Government Systems for income support her Human Services they also happen because of the breakdown of relationships in those neighborhoods whether that be young people to young people young people sitting there Broader Community or instigated because of the challenges are better experience and black. d police theres no saying theres no single bullet i want our you know its funny the one thing that you left out which i thought you would add you would include at the very top of your list is the easy act something that refer that creates a problem as well. Absolutely i mean america is a is an anti society we have a profound breakdown i think in our humanity because we believe that a way to solve violence is violence and whether that be entrapped immunity by ones like what were talking about today specifically in black and brown communities in chicago or whether every through our military whether it be to our police the color we are over the last few weeks from black lives matter or defund of police the success things are specifically to prevent exactly what chicago is experiencing right now i live in a city i grew up in the north who i know neighborhood was just instead of one of the most violent communities in our chicago and i know youre really there they didnt just be coming that way and a lot of the were just informed us that ive been trying to do over the last several years has been to move this site shrink where people think they have nothing to do with this because they live in a diverse city that is segregated and they themselves away from the diversity that has the shooting issues. Ok so if the issue doesnt affect affluent people whether theyre black or white by the way who live in middle class neighborhoods or gated neighborhoods etc the problem that is in these inner city communities where people are either poor or close to being poor how do we get them to somehow change what looks like a behavioral problem. Theres no getting theres only moving them up if you think that the risk of responsibility happening we see gun violence is to get louder about gun violence your law the earth the actions of dos that get closer it is the breakdown of relationships and this deprivation of resources that create violent situations that were talking about today its not you know if theres an adult white person after a black person that we think that they dont have their life isnt affected by gun violence simply because they dont live anywhere near or theyre not i have agrees or moved from someone who very young person in the last year sleepily rob while they were taxpayer how are there are. Are so francis last leslie in chicago we were talking about the funny police the reason why were saying that is because theyre by just they should be going to you program the budgets that should be going to access to quality healthcare by just they should be going so appropriate Mental Health services for kids who are living through and experiencing incredible amounts of trauma and they have a Police Officer in their school with a job have a School Counsellor or a nurse who works on earth and this time its happening and we as a society have never bet big on poor people or brown people or black people that do the right thing if they had the resources not only did they get served whether they were producing for themselves that have been stripped from their neighborhoods thats a great argument you present it well im so glad we had you on to help us understand this what well done exam here is really an author in a pleasure to talk to you my friend thanks again. Absolutely this debate over societys relationship to public statues continues to simmer here in the United States and around the globe in fact this week protesters pull down a statue of confederate general albert pike in washington d. C. Look at this the general and famous freemason statue was set up but it was set up at night t. No one local Freemasons Group with the terms that he would not be depicted in a military uniform because even they recognized that this guy was a controversial figure meanwhile in london likely statue has come under scrutiny government workers of place to protective casing around the famous statue of god be god be in the citys downtown area gandhi is revered worldwide as the father of his nation of a champion in the fight against colonialism his legacy has been called into question because of some views that he expressed about race during his life for more on the story we go to war to correspondent should a word. Shes in london. Im here on Parliament Square where standing directly behind me is the statue of a county which is the latest statue to be embroiled in the controversial race with black eyes masses protesters targeting various statutes up and down the country for connections and historical connections to racism and colonise ation and a legacy often in paris and quite controversial there that county isnt world in it because its widely accepted that county is indeed a symbol of anti colonise sation and employed as a nonviolent resistance activist not to mention of course his links to peaceful activism as well and has long been hailed for all of those. But of course the backlash not to protest this now talkative gandhi because they argue he has links with racism and says that hes even been quite openly an explicit about those links as well now as we know the practice Marxist Movement how do you believe. After the killing of george freud but here in the United Kingdom activists are not just talk at saying symbols of racism but also structures and representation of it as well and thats why Mahatma Gandhi is the latest want to be embroiled in all of that across the other side of Parliament Square where im stood is a statue of Winston Churchill of course the former Prime Minister activists deface that start to writing on it Winston Churchill was a racist they argue that Winston Churchill has numerous links to a legacy of colonize ation and imperialism so active its main aim is to rid britain of all of those connections its crimes as we saw quite iconic scenes in bristol a few weeks ago where activists pulled down a start 2 of agriculture to the 17th century slave trade and what they did with that statue is throw it into the river but it is statues like Winston Churchill and gandhi that opinion because many were doggy that those 2 figures they should be had and should be celebrated in venerated even on it and protected but Many Campaign is an activist within the black clouds marches movement say that its time to rid britain of its colonial past this is shadow star steve reporting for rick sanchez thanks so much its amazing to see how this story is spread globally this is the news with youre watching our special coverage were going to be right back. Id like one of the. Questions and actually listen to the. React to. The other still or rather new show. On the larry king question being listening learning you know ive always said i never learned anything when i was talking its important to listen. Questioning more on. Several weeks ago we hear others the rick sanchez an r t america broke on our very hot story about a conflict between china and india and kashmir particularly in a place called doc you recall that story well things have taken a turn for the worse recently in this story 120 indian soldiers were killed in a class for the Chinese Military 10 indian soldiers were also taken captive but later released by china there are also reports that chinese sort of soldiers were killed now since this clash the tensions have barely calmed down with each side hurling accusations at the other china India Chinese officials or even accusing india of sending troops across the border into chinese territory meanwhile indias dispute with pakistan over the same region see that area right there continues thats where the 3 countries sort of come together that border for more on this potential conflict boiling over lets go to Michael Maloof hes a former a pentagon official whos been helping us to understand this situation a little bit better. You know michael we thought that they had come to some kind of truce or at least there was a report out that the chinese and the indians had settled the dispute but it looks like theres no settling this dispute and iraq. Oh youre not wrong they havent settled it per se they have agreed to a 2 a cease fire temporarily and next week theres going to be a meeting which was actually planned prior to all of this hoopla between. Russia india and china its called the rick r i c meeting and its its politically interesting that russia is chairing this because on both sides both india and china regard russia as perhaps the. Better mediator then a donald trump who offered last may or for trying to bring both sides together thats going to be very very difficult to bring these 2 sides together regardless of the who brings them together because of their age old differences over disputed long held territory so yeah i mean i really i personally would not want to fight a war at 14000 feet ive been up in that region and its bitterly cold up there its really no place to fight a war be honest with you know its interesting i mean but now i mean this thing seems to be getting serious were talking about 2030 people who are yeah killed but you know i want to i want to ask you a little bit more about what you just said that i didnt know that what you just said im kind of caught by surprise i mean thinking as most westerners think youd think whenever theres a dispute and you need a country to go in and mediate it would usually be the u. K. It would be friends it would be the United States what does it say to you that in a major global dispute russia not france not the u. K. And not the United States is mediating. Well theres a number of reasons if for the United States to be looked upon as the unbiased mediator it just isnt going to fly because. Trump is really lashed out against china in very recent months and thats one of the reasons why india actually turned down truck because they did not want to appear to be using trump because of this a still image as far as u. K. And anybody else from the west they are looked upon as colonialized as are the ones who are responsible for this mess in the 1st place so theyre not good but russia is a different story because both countries respect russia and on the other hand all 3 of those well including pakistan i might add theyre all involved in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and there you have those countries evolving toward a separate world order if you will apart from the west and that and they are much more comfortable both india and. China in this case are much more comfortable with russia being a potential mediator. So its very its going to be id its going to be very interesting to see how they work these things out and sides are very far apart right now so its going to be a diplomatic challenge for russia to try to bring these sides together because each side what the india and china have been building up their forces in these disks in this disputed area and highways military installations so so its going to be its going to be a challenge for even russia at this point to try and work something out between the 2 sides so it is it comes down to choosing a good mediator depends on whether that mediator has a. Depends on whether that mediator has a dog in the fight which is why so many who will say that the United States is not the right country to try to mediate the dispute between israel and the palestinians it almost seems laughable to me even just coming out of my mouth michael gove im not going to ask you to agree with me but. I thank you for the great ocean from your lips are a. Lot of smart man. That nation and the world are reopening for business after months of covert quarantine but fears over a new rise in infections and deaths are leaving some spectacle. Skeptical i mispronounce that word did i not for the very latest lets go to our to injure sayah is following the numbers for us what do the numbers say so i read globally the u. S. Is still has the most cases followed by brazil india russia and china but look at mortality rates this is where we are now mortality rates in the u. S. Is still the highest still again followed by the top 5 countries with the most cases and although this might seem higher thats actually relatively low because if you recall u. K. In italy both have had him a tally rate or 14 percent but i also want to discuss why they you. Now accounts for 20 percent of new cases globally around the world so a number of states across the u. S. Have reached new milestones today with new cases now nationwide cases are up 24 percent and thats only compared to a week ago but i also want to highlight 5 states that are seeing their highest 7 day average and see if there is a trend there now of course we have california where the number of people hospitalized is the highest its been since to pandemic and on sunday that had the most new cases in a single day which is also why we saw california mandating that every want to wear a mask in public and then were also seeing a florida that also on saturday had reported the most in a single day that the state has seen followed by texas which now has a 37 percent increase of new cases and thats again compared just to a week ago and arizona where health and Health Officials are warning that the state can now become the new epic center of depend and make and they have a 85 percent capacity of i. C. U. Patients and hospitals and lastly South Carolina theyre also broken their record with over 1100 new cases reported on saturday but look at all these trends going is there is there a correlation here well the same for states with a record increases which are arizona texas florida and South Carolina which i just discussed well they were also the 1st among the 1st to reopen back in early may and theyve also opened before that actually flatten the curve and before they had enough testing and tracing infrastructure in place but the case for California Well thats a little different of course some of the increase is contributed to the reopening of businesses way too early and also new outbreaks in Nursing Homes but california has also had a lot more testing so more test things new cases rake thats good stuff appreciate it just just to be sure that help me understand. Is are the deaths correlated equally to the number of cases that are going up as well well right now in the us actually were seeing the death rates lower because the more people that the new patient the new people that got infected theyre in their twentys and thirtys some because theyre younger and never recover in quicker so they could actually bring down the death rate but once they infect the older population thats where were going to see an increase in cases rick ok that makes perfect sense and i appreciate your explanation. So i have lets go to lets go to sports because theres a very important story in the sports world today and its coming from someone who is one of the most respected afterwards in the world stepping up in this argument this issue of race sports and politics chris tacos here to bring us up to date on this whats going on very well we know him is his name is Michael Johnson hes one of the most decorated greatest sprinters of all time hes a 4 time olympic Gold Medalist hes known for that upright powerful unconventional stride but it worked for him in the ninetys im sure we all remember him and our good friends that laureus over there at the warriors sports awards who use the power of sport for good yeah i got to sit down with him and he had some very interesting insights on institutional racism and systemic racism and how its very prevalent and where it stems from lets take a listen. Its systems and institutions because theres so many. You know. Racist policies to be implemented and allowed to be you know and they said ok. So to a Broad Spectrum of black people. You only have to just say you wrote this on their board of directors this is to me is not what this is. Why people or what people and. Were not recognize as being equal the same system still exists in other words youre allowed to be an athlete but youre not allowed to sit in the boardroom exactly we see very few owners in the m l b the n. F. L. The n. H. L. I mean i have some numbers here we only have one majority black owner and thats Michael Jordan in the n. B. A. We have one person of color among principle owners in the m. B. And there are 0 in the n. F. L. Or the n. H. L. So it is a problem from the top down and you see very few in the front office as well and no very few black gems in these pro sports what else does he say about whats going on in the world of sports today because theres a lot of contention even in sports itself you might ask are of course oh yeah nascar is a big one were going to talk about later today a big incident there against a bubble wallace said a disgusting act actually and well get into that which the department of justice is now looking into but Michael Johnson actually using his platform and his athletic status to speak out and he says more athletes should be role models and use that platform so listen to this. Every athlete has that opportunity would this situation try to continue to try to sustain this momentous but also to talk bring people together because we know that sports as our with men are very powerful tools for bringing people together because one of the things we have to do it this is we have to had the conversation we have to continue to have that conversation we have to bring people who. Use to gather to talk and to understand want to know. Right there understand one another specters i could go a long way in self educating and having these discussions that are sometimes difficult but they need to be had youre going to join me at 5 pm with something very very ugly that has happened in the United States in the world of nascar and i know everybodys talking about it and im looking forward it has to do with the news yes well leave it at that and im looking forward to your report as well thank you steve thanks rick thats our news im rick sanchez face safe stay connected with the portable t.
