Greetings and sal you take issue we are now more than 20 days into our summer of rebellion here in the United States of america in the protesting in the streets still going strong from washington d. C. To seattle to atlanta the once voiceless are now proudly and forcefully uniting in one great voice rallying against a Law Enforcement criminal Justice System thats based solely on power money and violence President Trump showed us as much in todays rose garden briefing slash 2 1020 4 campaign stump speech when after Promising Police reforms by among other things giving Law Enforcement more money. He then randomly started talking about the economy. And what does that mean the stock market went through the roof these good numbers they drove it up to a level that were almost at the same level hard to believe were getting very close to the level we were before the pandemic and before all of the things that youve seen happen yeah you know because nothing nothing says Police Reform like master pretoria wall street bootlicking i mean what ive been to reforming police a wall street meanwhile democratic candidate joe biden well. Actually as anyone even heard from joe at this point. You know rapidly rising. Because even remember hes running for president seriously but despite the failures of our corporate approved leadership on all levels its the protesters and the activists on the ground who are actually changing the world and helping us all into a better and Brighter Future since the tragic murder of george boyd on may 25th by the Minneapolis Police department the folks fighting for justice on the ground have not only been able to force the minnesota Justice System to arrest and charge the officers involved. They also gave a much deserved game of thrones style shaming to an out of this league young mayor and in a stunning turn were actually able to pressure the Minneapolis City Council to announce plans to disband its Police Department and invest in Community Based Public Safety programs following their calls to defend the police to defund the police so today my friends we honor the real warriors who are out there fighting for real change in this country as we start watching the hawks. She wanted list on a city street. That are so youd like to see that rises you always state. Rice great city displays systemic dissent says so but shes with some things just as. Well going to watching the hawks i am tyro been there and joining us today is civil rights attorney and kima levy armstrong who has been on the front lines in the battle for equality in Police Accountability since those tragic 8 minutes back on may 25th welcome the came and thank you for coming on the day. Think. Mickey mouse as i say youve been one youve been in this spot for equality of accountability in minneapolis since long even long before the tragic murder george boyd are indeed the wheels of change finally moving faster in minnesota than weve seen in years past. Well in 3rd we in that way we have been war or outcry for. That. Tragic yet ford or the Minneapolis Police department were seeing a lot more people taking to the streets quite a number of young folks who are raising their voices and who have persistently been challenging in justice for the last 20 plus days so its great to see you and i hope that it continues until we shift this whole system because as we say in the streets the whole damn system is guilty of snow. I couldnt agree with you more but i could not agree with you more and became that weve seen all of the weve seen protesters who have shouted down the mayor of minneapolis recently what do you think is the significance of minneapolis and City Councils decision to call for the disbanding of the Police Department and what are activists on the ground calling for to put in its place. Well just to set the record straight our Minneapolis City Council. Has not been active in terms of Holding Police accountable for the last several years i have been one of the folks calling them out along with other activists for trying to pander to different groups of people and not even having the Legal Authority to disband the Minneapolis Police department nor to define that at this point and so because weve been calling them out and saying listen you have to do the real boots on the ground work the heavy lifting you have to learn about these issues and you have to get serious about Holding Police accountable they have walked back a lot of the comments that they made publicly that grabbed a lot of headlines and got a lot of peoples hopes up and were and some of them were calling for them to be ousted in the next election as a matter of fact because we have gone to city hall so many times demanding that they hold Police Accountable they have failed to do so and now that there is a global outcry were seeing them pretend to become more involved but its really empty at this point until we actually see some results that truly is heartbreaking because you know nothing is worse than a politician who gets on t. V. And says what the people want to hear and then behind closed doors as oh no im sorry i cant hear you but on the ground like i said since the beginning since long before news cameras and twitter feeds ive even focused on the streets of south minneapolis from other sort of large what do you feel has been the biggest misrepresentation in the last 20 some odd days of the minneapolis protesters and activists like yourself who are fighting so hard for change. Were right were doing started burning and stores started to be looted we had a lot of our media here trying to tie. Activists to those types of demonstrations that were happening but our demonstrations have largely been peaceful for the last 5 plus years the reality is that we warned elected officials that we were in a combustible situation in the city of minneapolis because of their failed its a whole Police Accountable and because of the consistent economic injustice that africanamericans experience they have known about these problems they didnt take it seriously and finally things just exploded so none of us condone the buildings burning in the things that happen but thats what it is taken to gain the attention of the governor the mayor City Council Members and legislators to actually begin to take these issues seriously. And became a you know youve been in this movement and movements like this for a long time just as much as people are excited to see a movement take waves and get this type of national and International Attention there are people on the other side who also want to see and soon after a few new reforms are passed in some of the statues of historical races or topple brome down do you think that the fighting has needs to go deeper or are some of these moves correct and where do the protests go next whats the next change activists are calling for. Were you are persis that and calling for killer cops to be removed from the force were persistent in calling for cops with a history of Excessive Force to be removed from the police force as well were calling for the removal of the head out the Minneapolis Police Federation Bob Kroll because of his own violent history as a Police Officer but also the fact that he is often called killer cops or roic in the public eye is which is just completely unacceptable so were going to continue to demand those changes at the local level were also pushing our State Government to take action and to form an independent body that investigates Police Murder cases and that also has an independent special prosecutorial unit and right now theres a push back at the legislature to have those cases be reviewed by the attorney general for the state of minnesota but we dont want someone who is cozy with the system to investigate Police Murder cases we need a completely independent body and one that allows for some public oversight in input into how things play out i want to ask you to you know when we look back at the beginning of what black lives matter coming out well for you even before ferguson but you know really kind of you know catching major headlines after you know the killing of Michael Brown an arab gardener and you know a few years back what do you feel has been the biggest difference between the push and then for justice and what were seeing this summer. Well we know that a lot more people are informed as a result of the uprisings that happened in ferguson and just the fact that we have been persistent in terms of getting our message out whether its popular or not whether we have a crowd of 500 versus 50 people in the streets were still out there advocating but i think with the Global Pandemic that were all experiencing and having a shelter in place it forced people to Pay Attention when they saw the brutal killing of george floyd on video and i think that just all of that frustration and that anger and that outrage at our government at the fact that no meaningful steps have been taken to address Police Violence just cause people to take to the streets in mass and support and are held in jeopardy really to go out and and and advocate for justice but that is what needed to happen and were glad that folks in office the states actually got involved in demonstrating which i dont think has ever happened before naxa mentions so many folks around the world who are pushing for justice for george floyd and on stolen lives that is unprecedented as far as we can tell and it just motivates us to keep fighting for justice until we see the entire system shift and until there is an overhaul of our system of policing as we know it in so many of our communities we need Mental Health services we need social services we need jobs we dont need to continue investing so much money in our Police Forces and we came up with movements like this happen folks on the outside are always asking where is the leader we know that this this movement has taken shape across multiple states as you mentioned its also taken shape globally what would you say is the mode of success that youve seen despite the fact that a lot of people would argue that this is a leaderless group. Well i think that there are a lot of different leaders i think that it is actually a misrepresentation of the movement when people say that theres no single leader there doesnt have to be one single leader in order for a movement to be affective i think that part of the strength of the movement is that we have leaders from all walks of life particularly black leadership thats multigenerational thats out on the front lines standing up for justice along with allies along with nonblack allies as well who are you know using their voices to fight for change and fight for justice we also know historically when there has been one leader that folks can pinpoint those leaders have been assassinated like Dr Martin Luther King Jr like malcolm x. You know the list goes on and on and so i think the folks are saying listen all of us can be leaders all of us can step up to the plate all of us can demand justice and i appreciate that became i just want to tell you and you know for someone who grew up in minnesota as a native there i just want to say you know what all this went down im seeing the good work that youve been doing out there on the streets in the last 20 some odd theres i just cant tell you how proud i am and how honored i am to have you on the show today on that and thank you so much for the good work that youre doing out there and making this change happen any more for your court and. Not rightful for all of the people whove been out there thousands of people on the front lines 20 days straight fighting for justice always a pleasure having you on the kimmel every armstrong civil rights attorney keep up the great work. Were living in historic times black people in america are sick and tired of being sick and tired of being choked out by a nation that continues to offer oppression under the guise of democracy the murder of an unarmed black man george floyd spark nationwide protests that received Global Support black lives matter took center stage organizing protests from coast to coast spreading awareness on social media buying the voices of those on the ground crying out for an int Police Brutality and White Supremacy employees of tech giants like apple google and microsoft raised over 4000000. 00 for the black lives Matter Foundation noble no movements need a salient message manpower energy and yes funds but what is the black lives Matter Foundation your guess is as good as money this week the cap blew off of this shadow group that has no affiliation with black lives matter whatsoever the black lives Matter Foundation is actually located in Santa Clarita california it has one paid employee and list a u. P. S. Store as its address. The black lives Better Foundation has 0 core nation with d. L. Him and according to the foundations own Founder Robert ray barnes i never met them never spoke them and i have no one nation ship with them. Since early june donations have been pouring in to support black lives matter and this Santa Clarita group seems to be taking advantage of the moment in the popular name further once black lives Matter Foundation hasnt done a thing to advance the movement with the millions hes raised since swagger jack in the brain. But boards isnt the only one coming under fire for donations the Minnesota Freedom Fund a popular built on in the midwest is getting a lot of social media fire as well after raising 30000000. 00 in the wake of george lloyds murder and the subsequent protests the phone has only use 200000 its a bailout protesters. Black grassroots activists were quick to call out the bail fund asking for transparency in a plan of how the money would be spent but for their part the Minnesota Freedom Fund is addressing the issue in real time via twitter it seems to shake out that this bail fund isnt various at all but its understaffed working through the complicated web of cash bail important procedures and loading up to capacity. That was unclear what would you call a swagger swagger jacket swagger jacket investment new favorite word of the day out of work so what is that ok the black lives Matter Foundation to break that down for me and how exactly did this swagger jacket which is the butt lives Matter Foundation is actually a registered Nonprofit Organization and they noticed that there was a lot of attention being played to black lives matter as a group they saw the hashtags they saw that there were individuals who were willing to donate and give and they set up a go fund me page as well as a donation page on their website not listing that they had 0 affiliation with the actual black eyes matter group and they were accepting donations in the millions from the very big name individuals and celebrities sports sports folks they were accepting it from different members of the tech world and those 4 have not said anything related to where the money is going to go they have no plan of that and they havent spent any of it yet either its just certain there is it is just sitting there wow thats messed up and then theres this guy the you know the guy the owners and hes basically just not giving up anything on it right. There people are questioning him but hes not really stepping forward to giving you know sort of like about what is going to do with the money or where its going to go to just sit most moment hes just sitting on the money that he has been question about what his fund raising looked like before you know this june protests took off and a little bit of Research Shows that his fund raising was about 200 dollars so this organization had nothing. Before a lot of the protests took off and theyve really taken advantage of a name that they are using to elevate basically their best right now with mel the minnesota bail for and what you were talking about is a completely different kind of situation this is are people trying to steal peoples money or anything this is just Something Different this is an organization that i dont think was really prepared to have this much you know we were didnt have the infrastructure to be prepared to take in this much money that they got and you are 100 percent correct the minnesota bill is totally staffed by volunteers so any donation that is given to the bail fun is not used for middle management its not news for individuals at all it goes directly towards bail something interestingly creepy happened on twitter late last night where there were some conservative groups that actually attacked the baleful on because they were looking at the amount of fundraising they have done versus the amount of money that its been spent on bail the problem with that is that it went by will very quickly so it started from these conservative hacks that were basically trying to call out bail issues these are the same folks who try to shut down bail bonds across the country because they dont believe in anyone being able to help impoverished and disadvantaged people who are largely locked up for low level bail so what were seeing is that it actually ended up taking off because a lot of activists re tweeted it because they also started asking where is this money going you are legitimate question to see how much was given birth is how much would actually be spent right now to go about 35000000. 00. So legitimate questions about transparency the minnesota beltline actually decided that they were going to step up to the plate and respond in a series of tweets that are Still Available on twitter they went through exactly what their process is and i dont think that a lot of people understand how the bail process works so i worked in criminal Justice Reform specifically around bail issues and bail reform just because you someone post bail doesnt mean youre automatically released there is a process to this and sometimes it can take days sometimes it can take. You shattering my image of what hollywood has taught me that the most. You post bail and good boy walk out with your gold watch 4 and life as like a lunatic or not i want to lie to us once again. A lot of it gets wrapped up in red tape and in many cases you see Police Departments amplify charges and sometimes they get amplified specifically after somebody is taken in and we see this time and time again in protest movements there are trumped up charges that have nothing to do with what they originally told them they were getting taken away for and the bail movement is trying to work around those issues so its not nefarious at all theyre going through a process theyve actually gotten a lot more volunteers to to show up now because they know that this is overburdened some poor the current staff of volunteers that they have and i think that over the next few days were definitely going to see things shape up as you and i do love groups like that who are stuck with up to say hey give us donations so we can help these people who are you know being unfairly processed and we can bounce these people out of prison and through help through some of that red tape by giving people money and access to forms that they dont normally do exactly the bigger issue i think that is smart that the minnesota bail plan actually you know elevate it was that bail in america is a system that is designed to keep poor people poor and to take advantage of disadvantage and minority communities and thats exactly what were seeing here so all in all folks out there create tension to where you send your money when youre trying to get on board with some of these great movements were changing for change you dont want to give your money to buy a bad actors and players. In americas most populated city new york city the Police Commissioner announced the citys anticrime unit comprised of 600 plainclothes officers will be dissolved instead those officers will be shifted to more Community Policing this change as a result of on going protests putting pressure on Police Officers treatment of mainly blacks and hispanics meanwhile nationwide protests continue today and in some areas escalating to buying confrontations arties treme reports.
