Not imaginary tansey and were going underground is the 73rd World Health Assembly brings together members of the w. H. O. Virtually and after the u. S. Accuses a chinese lab of formulating coronavirus and stealing Vaccine Research coming up on the show and the strange connection. I connect with people with with animals that small mind to mind one of the worlds most famous conservationists jane goodall tells going underground that finger wagging at china from elites wont stop the Global Industrial farming practices and environmental destruction that may cause the next pandemic oliseh more coming up on todays going underground but 1st to a scientist who has transformed our definition of humanity itself while leaders like Boris Johnson and donald trump attempt to reignite neoliberal economics after coronavirus the pioneering primatologist dr jane goodall argues we need mastery education about what it is to be human without that education for moated in 140. 00 countries by our n. G. O. Roots and shoots we are condemned just suffer not just coronavirus but one pandemic after another she joins me now via skype from bournemouth in england jane thanks so much for coming on everyone here is talking about restarting the economy the u. S. And u. K. Saying weve got to fight china yet few people really talking about environmental or industrial farming what do you make of the origin of coronavirus. Well you know i obviously personally havent studied the transmission of viruses from animals to people the socalled soon arctic to c. S. S. But ive read an awful lot about it its very clear that most new diseases in people today have spilled over from bacteria or in this case of iris from animals sometimes it goes from a reservoir speed to another animal which ystem the intermediate host and from that down im allowed to people and we brought this on ourselves because of our terrible disrespect of the Natural World and animals and so you know we take wild animals we kill them eat them we trafficked them we send them to meet markets in asia well marked animal meat markets in asia and meat the bush meat trade animals also meat markets in africa and we breathe down Domestic Animals billions of them in terrible cruel. You know conditions and all of this terrible conditions in the meat markets and our factory farms are creating absolutely super environments as far as that this is a 2nd sound to animals to people who move to the markets there no less than a celebrity like support mccartney who is quick to say we must close the wet markets down i notice youve been keen to emphasize the difference between wet markets per se and wildlife markets perhaps seeking not to oriental eyes this pandemic. Yes well the thing is the point about a wet market is that most wet markets in china dont sell wild animals theyre more like the farmers markets that we have while we have them in britain and america but not wild animals thats now been closed in china the trading and selling of wild animals for troops the problem here is you saw one program but then another looms and the one looming here is all the thousands of people who actually have no other likelihood so you have to help them get through changing from breeding and selling wild animals hunting wild animals for food and finding another way of making money so you see poverty is crucial eradication of poverty is crucial to your Environmental Concerns absolutely and you know we mustnt forget the Climate Crisis and our concern for the cove it 19 because thats something which will carry on into the future this this pandemic will get through b. S. That out of many many places are going to have very serious economic problems people have lost their jobs people are mourning family members who know its been awful but we will get through it just as we get through really been through a lot of very unpleasant times in my life 9 live 860 so. When you hear leaders like Boris Johnson babson certainly dont trump repeatedly claiming no one could have predicted this pandemic you know you dont think thats the case. And i know its not its not like because people studying these these soon arctic seasons have been predicting aids started problems and things and selling eating chimpanzees into different parts of our. Sassed thats again from another wild wild animal market in china bent not again probably camels in the middle east and then being simple academics began trauma factory farms in the effort to arson all these terrible unhygienic conditions one of the new films that out from national geographic. Called jame the 1st of their 2 once called hope talks about you when youre in goma in tanzania and the tragedy when polio hits the Small Community of a chimpanzees you are investigating in and made the whole of the world realize that humans were the only not and the only species do have consciousness arguably just tell me about when a pandemic hit that camp. Well it was it was really only the worst time in my life because we never knew which chimpanzee would come in dragging an arm or a neck and then some of them would just disappear and it was it was absolutely heartbreaking and it began in a nearby town. And bizarrely the doctor at the time it was an italian he he didnt he could not talk about probably you know we think its because he couldnt have the proper supplies anyway no nobody knew that there was colon or anywhere and then some people in a village just south of gandhi got this paralysis and then some chimps there was seen dragging limbs and then it came to us so we back snake is the muslim in there is susceptible to these restore a tree diseases and were terribly worried that this could lead 19 could get you know an effect in fact our chimps and theyre all endangered now and the iranian towns yeah im going to get the reasons for there are possible extinction but speaking about gone bad nearly 60 years since you were there with a groundbreaking research but of course whats disturbing about it today is it led to a war a virtual war between different elements in the community because an epidemic struck an area well actually the division of the community and what i call the 4 year war wasnt actually. It had nothing to do with the polio epidemic what we now know is that anywhere where a tourist an ape so its a privilege that is that we have to take very great precautions to ensure that the chimps dont catch on to see since. The 2 contains i knew in the old days how honest all gone but one of the ones who has by a real say friend was graeme and. Last time i actually saw kremlin she came right up to me and looked into my eyes i mean of course they recognize us just as we recognize them that we had ducked under the shiver on this Program Actually in the past few days i know she said platforms with you she was saying it was clear the deforestation is part of the puzzle of corona virus and his one and a half acres of rain forests are destroyed every 2nd tell me about the divorce stationary its affected animal life the chimpanzees that you love so so much and why the whole world needs to wake up to the idea that its affecting them right now well the deforestation particularly of the tropical forests which are carbon sinks the way you know absorb c o 2 Carbon Dioxide from the atmosphere and store it and as we destroy the forests we release that Carbon Dioxide back of course relates to the Climate Crisis just like the pollution of the ocean but also as we clean out more and more current its rich bio diversity so animals are pushed together much more frequently than they would be because you know the owners in habitat and animals are pushed into shreds the contact with humans some a democrat rating simply becomes we have been great at their homes so yeah this is definitely an important part of the. Seasons. In one of the movies the chicago conference you spoke at in 1986 was on forest destruction and instead that 90 percent of chimpanzees were killed in the 1980 s. It seems like an enormous sum what does it feel like in 2020 talking about deforestation. Well its just going on and you know its one of the things that a con terribly concerned parent intensity o. E. M. Programs for reforestation and protecting the existing forests will have biodiversity and thats where it impacts the the zoonotic diseases so why do you think a pandemic that is made everyone conscious of that connection i suppose you would hope why is it theres been no call for companies associated with forest destruction were no call for them to be shut down after this pandemic is if not over at least has less of an impact on our daily lives. Well lets hope there were there that will be there might be i mean ive been fighting to stop the forestation and again we come back to probably because an awful lot of that the forest station and the scene with other habitats too is very poor people and down there are streams in that desperation to grow food to feed their families so you know we also have to take into consideration the growing human population world line 8 and. I learned in the rainforest how everything is interconnected and just doing one piece of it isnt enough but luckily different n. G. O. S tackle different aspects of that Global Environmental problem out in the forest i have this very strong feeling of great spiritual power and. It was the kind of feeling that i sometimes have in one of the old cathedrals where people have been to my shrimp yeah after year after year. You are arguably. Really important when it came to stopping animal experimentation basically chimpanzee experimentation with all the talk about hours of vaccines and actually theyre often talking about on the rocks or university of a chimp a dino virus that theyre injecting with corona virus as i understand it into pigs well how do you see the role of our animal animal experimentation in Vaccine Research. Well quite honestly by talk to the people who are doctors and scientists who are coming up against on the experimentation you know the stillest work on mice and rats and dogs and even chimpanzees are not so like us they were they were thought to be the arms finding back scenes and hearers but although they can be infected now the animals couldnt they didnt develop the symptoms. One of the labs i visited i was shown into this room with 4 tims down each side 5 foot by 5 foot k. To 7 foot high and the 1st form is called jojo. It was very handsome male been alone for 15 years or so and i looked into his eyes and i was thinking of the gumby chimpanzees lying in their soft ground making leafy nasts grooming each other and hed been there alone with time and so tears began trickling under my mask and he reached out a gentle finger and wiped the tears away the way ahead is to work harder and harder on alternatives to using any animals in medical experimentation and you know theres a lot of doctors writing from atlanta was going to conferences that it and huge strides has been made theres many many ways of experimenting with excel tissue and organ tissue which do not involve torturing animals the problem very often is that to get some new drugs on the market you have to show the powers that be whatever organization it is that you are done experiments on animals dr jane goodall stop you that more from one of the worlds most famous conservationists after this short break. The world is driven by. The day or thinks. We. Welcome back im still here with world renowned conservationist dr jane goodall well on the Big Pharmaceutical Companies maybe on big fossil fuel companies. Actually whos written about chimpanzees in a different context hes a hes been talking about this apparent dissonance between the c. E. O. s of these sorts of companies and the children and grandchildren of the c. E. O. s of these companies tell me about roots and shoots and how. Somehow education can create children or help children understand i dont know what their parents are doing is going to create more pandemics in the future. Yes absolutely more pandemics and more destruction of the environment and actually stealing their future it works rich interests began in 1991 and it began with 12 High School Students in tanzania its now in 65 countries its growing all the time and it has members in kindergarten university in everything in between and may choose projects themselves but want to help people one help animals one to help the environment because of this everything being interconnected and changing the world as we speak they are were listening to their very small theyre being empowered and were helping them to express us a feel and theyre learning about the kind of things that we never learn to count because they want problems back then. I had the idea for luton tonight because i found so many young people whod lost hope and said there was nothing they could do about the future of the planet so i try and inspire as many children of all ages as i can to take action and roots and shoots somehow create certain values and we found that many what i call alumni the people being true the roots and shoots program. They they you know they come up to me in china for example and say what of course we care about the environment we were in roots and shoots in Primary School and i didnt know for a fact that sometimes a child will influence the behavior parent or grandparent because they told me so what about the idea of it say no less than the girlfriend of the british Prime Minister carry simmonds of me into anything i understand about roots and shoots will politicians really react to. Speeding up processes that will stop Climate Change i mean by 20 what is that within 100 years we expect to have no rain forest whatsoever on earth at the current rate. At the current rate and thats why its so desperate to stop it and we still have time we have this window of time and i think my greatest hope is partly the resilience of nature you know around gandhi in 1998 all the trees that had been there had gone and now theyre back again because we work with the people alleviate their property and so on but. So their children you know theyre not theyre not making demands theyre showing example i dont believe you can change anybodys heart whether its a parent whos just a you know ordinary person with an ordinary job or somebody whos a c. E. O. Or a politician youve got to reach the heart its no good arguing with that with the mind because soon as you begin arguing people get defensive they want to protect their point of view and theyre thinking all the time about how theyre going to refute what they can wring but if you tell stories stories that region of the heart you may not know at the time the difference that you make but you sometimes find out later what about working with big business on environmental projects we have no less than an adviser to Prince Charles on this program who told us that he was appalled by green washing at top fossil fuel companies of course you have a history with conoco funded your project what would you advise environmentalist today about whether they should team up with big fossil fuel companies perhaps with flowers on their labels and their logos. Yes well i think the 1st thing to do is to investigate the practices that that company and what percentage of money theyre putting into developing alternative Clean Renewable Energy is a reason that we went with conoco is because back then before they were true they were bought out by 1st dupont and then today phillips but back then they were the most environmentally friendly oil company on the planet and i think i sat down and i thought ok i dont think this thing out and i thought to myself heres a company thats trying to do it as well as they can and im flying im driving im using electricity im spending money on the products that products that these Oil Companies are selling so its very hypocritical if you need one thats trying to do better and you say no im not going to take your money might look might make you look better than you are as hypocritical so my met my my advice is really find out what that company is doing i mean some of them totally mushy and its awful but some of them really are putting a lot of money into alternative energy and treat planting then take money from them and what bring them to make things thats just how i work partly this some activists with say have a time for that our environmental ism is over as the Climate Emergency becomes more obvious Extinction Rebellion the group the International Group that is. In the lead arguably with fighting Climate Change they were put on a tear or list here perhaps using tactics perhaps using weapons of their are enemies whats your reaction to Extinction Rebellion as it plans demonstrations around the world virtually or in situ during the pandemic. Well i think i honestly think that you know demonstrations have a wrote play nonviolent demonstrations and to use force has happened in an nde many countries against peaceful protest is shocking i mean people need to express their views and i think when enough people as an Extinction Rebellion do take to the streets when children take to the streets you know it must spark some new awareness in some people and the way you can understand that they threaten the profits the socalled shareholder value the with all the externalities of the account of call them the power are clearly fearful of these demonstrations and arguably the the hope that you speak of i think youre writing a book on hope at the moment. Well thats absolutely true and you know the consumer and the vote in at least in some countries are really have a powerful role we again got to say. People living in poverty dont have much choice but providing you are reasonably well off if you dont like what a company guns dont buy its cut ups its again hypocritical to say oh the way you make all your your stuff is you know is totally environmentally unfriendly or stealing our childrens future and then you go and spend a lot of money by never that although as you say. Many people do not have arguably the 99 percent do not have the choice as austerity has kicked in in western economies in 20 or over you know its going to get worse but that is the big problem also you started off with education thats important too because unless people understand the dynamics of a problem they cant make it the call choice is coming and you know i found in china actually people who believed that elephants should better tusks if we you know what we say are that cant be true but if youve never seen an elephant youve never been taught anything about wild animals why shouldnt they ship that to us so you know again its education from sometimes a very basic level that helps people who can make a difference to make a difference when i was 10 years old i had them train i will go to africa i will live with wild animals and i will write books about them everybody laughed at me youre just a girl girls dont know that sort of thing. But my mother she said if you really want to do this youre going to have to work off a hard but dont give up and i know youve emphasized hope with action in the past you spoke with james baker the secretary of state for Ronald Reagan do you think youd speak today with donald trump and secretary of state pompei o about why they should link here is shaking your head why they should understand the link between the environment and the destruction of the u. S. Economy because of her own of ours now i mean everybodys tilden and i would to be honest i just wouldnt waste my time to king to people like that because they dont want to be you dont want to be dont want to change. The minute you see when you talk about consumer advocacy in the way that you just have im sure your probably aware of k. Street in washington the lobbying street how can you fight the lobbying of fossil fuel industries that are against what you say i mean obviously the jane goodall n. G. O. S are trying their best to educate tens of thousands of children can they make the difference compared to billions of dollars of Public Relations money Advertising Money in arguable backhanders to politicians. Well right now i suppose the answer is probably no but just because it seems you know unlikely doesnt mean you stop trying because if you give up then youll never succeed and i still believe we have a window of time and all we can do all of us is the very best that we can and try and get a browns well a Critical Mass of people who understand that yes we need money to live but it goes wrong when we lend some money i mean we read orleans economists who talk about the real cost of food on other materials that are coming in from other countries and when. We sort of again its the consumer who doesnt understand i mean why is this product cheap is cheap because of factory farming which is horribly cruel to animals and absolutely shocking its cheap because of child slave labor a slave chops and really were not paying the right amount of money for what we buy in the west to brown or to a very large extent so its like i say if we get all of these things you know theyre all interwoven and no one organization can solve everything or we can do is work as hard as we can to change just many minds as possible and to have hope that the many minds will change the way things operate because after this coronavirus if we go back to business as usual which is the goal of so many of our politicians around the world today that horrible swing to the far right then then this window of time that we have to create change its closing all the time dr jane good off thank air thats over to show everybody on wednesday here they have a basket on the ground i have a convict 50. This terror attack the lockerbie bombing died in tripoli often ages destruction of africas riches forgotten a country libya 270 people were killed in pan am flight 103 crash from a great family with 2 months ago grant if you believe to appeal his conviction widely seen as linked to a tony blair for going to oil deal with privatized b. P. Fossil fuel company until wednesday wash your hands and join the underground on you tube sound that instagram and facebook. Well its finally happening in russia gave to the public isnt the architects of the hoax and longer their accomplices in the media are being exposed when did obama buy know and when did they know it will anyone be held to account. Welcoming our viewers from around the world live from Central London this is our to u. K. Health secretary defends a government approach to the Coronavirus Crisis in care homes claiming a majority of them havent had an outbreak ill be speaking to a general practitioner shortly. Before secretary claims its not good for the countrys economy or health to stay in the lockdown as of public transport is ramped up as police have deployed to deal with workers returning to the office to get reaction on easing the lockdown from an Infectious Disease expert. The British Government is not ruling out taking action against councils who refused to reopen schools on the 1st of june the poor unhappy people say they wont be sending children. And also the influential committee of m. P. s and it is demand that the government be forced to delete data gathered by its Contact Tracing out and that one is about privacy. Health secretary that hancock has defended the British Governments approach to care homes during the Coronavirus Crisis thats after he was accused of failing to meet with bosses in the lead up to the lockdown which critics say could have cost lives already cause hes at a has all the latest now for us so we saw the Health Secretary had a tough day. Absolutely mad and. Really held to account but a number of people accusing he runs how such treats. The situation that we didnt social settings for example. And the next day shes having good Health Secretarys focus was she launched on the hospitals which meant that the situation in those social care settings went and detected one of the People Holding the health 60 to account was is opposite number the shadow Health Secretary just less. Last week he said hed put a protective ring around holmes from february but yesterday a care home provider in the sunday times wrote my quote elderly people want to party and i quote the government were asleep the real at the wheel isnt the reality that there was no early lockdown of care homes when there was no testing of people transferred from hospital to care homes until mid april making sure that we have the protection that ring of protection around patterns is important of course the majority of care homes have not had an outbreak a tool and we should we should thank the those running cat homes for the incredible hard work and the Infection Control that they put in place and there was no large day or the scale removal of people from hospital into homes towards the start of this crisis. Now care home leaders have accused our section of not holding any meetings with them in the lead up to the lockdown theres also been accusations that people were released from hospitals into care homes and social care settings where they would take the virus with them because they werent being tested and thats what there are some who believe thats the reason why the situation now is so dire that in care homes with anywhere above 10000. 00 deaths having taken place in those places now the Health Secretary did announce that everyone over the age of 5 who wish displaying symptoms with be getting access to testing elsewhere the government announcing and updating their own criteria list for symptoms coded 19 saying that those who have a loss of smell or loss of taste and whats known as i was mia they are also said to be advised to stop isolate for 7 days because they could have coded nineteens could even be longer than 7 days if they have other symptoms like a High Temperature so. This of course virus is a new one its that novel coded it is something that doctors and with or it sees a learning about every day and updating as they go along thank you very much indeed for that swell to discuss this off and im now joined by n. H. S. G. P. Dr get out of terra thank you very much today for being with us now the Health Secretary says the majority of calves havent actually had an outbreak what what do you make of that. Well i dont how he could possibly know that that seems to be a plot. And if you look at the case in care homes across europe across quite a number of countries in europe almost 50 percent of the cases of occurred in care homes and if you listen susa David Spiegelhalter professor in cambridge i believe he will also thought that it was much more likely that 50 percent of cases had occurred in care homes as well but if you look at the disparity between this time last year and now in the number of deaths there are i think more than 10000 unexplained death smaller the last year so even though its purely speculative i cant tell you for sure that theyre going to code it there is a big spike and deaths over and above what there was this time last year and in previous years and the only coincidence that there is is the 1st the Global Pandemic of covert 19 act is the care homes i have very very vulnerable residents it must be almost impossible to shield the ponderable in those sort of environments is not. Absolutely i mean theres a perfect storm so right at the beginning of this crisis we said all the government said the people most at risk with the elderly and people with preexisting medical conditions and if you were going to actively seek out patients with who fulfilled both criteria youd have to look no further than canadas basically so what went wrong then if we know about the vulnerability how come it has become so that the. Care homes are 1st line i think we should make no bones about that there is 1st line as general practice or as and here weve got a number of operations there and where as i think there probably was some absolute cancer protective ring around hospitals and the n. H. S. As a whole im not aware of any plans you know trying to allocate any blame for the politics here but i was not aware of any contingency or any planning for what would be done to protect cancer in a crisis like this and i was aware of a paucity of homes and a lack of testing and also possibly appropriate discharged. From hospitals which were trying to empty their beds so they could be ready for the influx of patients coming in with covert 19 what is the situation now the government had a slow start says investing billions of pounds into the care sector. Too little too late or are we going to see an improvement now. Well i would hope there would be an improvement now and i would hope that it has hit the target this is a very Vulnerable Group and. I think its such a shame that we havent done more earlier to protect this farmable segments of our society or even so i dont find it you know whats been done has been done but its. Normas disaster and its our i think the least we can do now is try to rectify the situation and invest as many resources as we can to testing of everybody that i know thats been promised now to supplying of p. P. So that care is a realtor to do their job properly and change p. P. A. Between residence so that theyre not spreading the virus actively from one residence to another and give us some sort of idea of how your fellow doctors indeed even either self of have met these challenges nurses doctors have to deal with these outbreaks in care homes what one of the challenges been like for them. Or the challenge has been theres been a suppose a lack of guidance weve been left for devices to work out how best to help our elderly care resident so you know the nationally where this crisis broke we took to doing most of our consultations remotely so we were doing video and telephone consultations primarily meant that water rounds that were taking place often weekly cease to cease to happen basically and were doing a book being done remotely or not at all so there is much less in the way of medical care and general practice for example go into care homes and im still left her a little bit confused as to how best to do this without placing residents at risk and whether there will be adequate supplies of p. P. When i go to so that i can actually look after patients without endangering myself or my family when i go in there and if theres more than one resident that needs to be seen whether there will be enough equipment for me to do that we wish you all the best with what youre doing thank you very much for finding the time to talk to us talk to you know about i think you better. The shadow home secretary has dubbed the governments immigration bill hypocritical for attempting to keep out low skilled workers while simultaneously celebrating those same workers on thursday evenings clap for keris one apologies weve got a few technical problems here at the modes and i hope that well be able to sort out in just a moment for you and as a as im saying a bit of a technical failure and well just take a brief break and we shall return to you in just a moment but apologies for that we can now return to the program were talking about the issue of care homes here in the country spoke previously to a g. P. And he was talking to us about the challenges he and his colleagues were facing i also spoke with Welsh Council leader emma lindahl whose mother has tested positive for corona virus in a care home hit by an outbreak. To be an investment of another story really because they care about story brilliant thats the point i made it only reports to newspapers and to the media generally their terms you can well kid thought i looked up to its a rather small home in terms of the size and quantity but quality wise are excellent and theyve been keeping it under lock and key safely and up i loved it and all the rest of it. But then all of sudden they were hit with it because somebody came in from hospital who they are and to ensure that they didnt have the virus they were getting im sure im spent and they did how did the virus so and so weve got it not wait unfortunately that only. Within 2 days but the virus was in and theyve gone through that and so far everything everybodys coming through it sort of unscathed do you say do you say the cat has been absolutely brilliant how have they coped since the virus entered the home how was the cabin affected from from what you gather. Well i have a conservation and that is that is the manager asked and ive been having a conversation you know as a center as a you know it over there in there but also as a Council Leader and blazing on you know so you know what what what whats best to do it in and day zoned it immediately really once once was there was any danger of it up meaning it was that it was owned into red and green and kept apart and then people kept the room and segregated in order to get over the period where they fought out and fought it you know with gusto really and made it work but the other wanted out of that is that theyve all been tested no stuff on residence but unfortunately most i was told at the weekend that my mother has tested positive so so she has caught it again no and they would be treating her again for that although shes not showing any any huge symptoms with that pedicure mothers have been tested what twice and then found to be positive with kovac she had the illness twice you know she was tested the 1st time and that was just the single attacks and she was she was not positive on that word but this weekend they were tested as a care home and in that general test she came back positive. The foreign secretary has claimed it wouldnt be feasible for the u. K. To remain in permanent lockdown after concerns that it was being lifted to sing of course its true to say that making any changes inherently comes with some risk of spreading the virus compared to simply staying at home. But its also true that staying in permanent lockdown is itself not sustainable on Health Grounds or economic grounds. Thats why weve only measures where it can be done with the lowest risk possible and thats also why were watching the impact of every change that we make very closely. But it comes amid fears of public transport could be overloaded as workers in england continue to return to their jobs transport police have been deployed to roll way stations to help control overcrowding Boris Johnson has encouraged members of the public to get to work by walking or cycling but the number of people boarding public transport is predicted to rise by 25 opposed plans include one way systems on trains fewer seats and Hand Sanitizer points Public Health consultant professor keith neal told me earlier that its all about managing the risks in different areas in different ways. I think the issue is that theres guidance at work at home if you can still stands in its place the other issue is that it isnt just a blanket return to work regardless and number of people who work in say Building Sites outside are clearly a much lower risk of acquiring anything in the open air because we know that is a much lower risk most places workplaces had now 8 weeks to consider how to manage the coded 19 risk within the specific environment and weve had people working in various places that anybody whos gone shopping would have noticed the changes put in place by various shops and he sees measures that employees have been called upon to sort out for themselves there are probably thousands if not millions of specific workplaces across the country and its actually impossible for the government to telling each one with its own specific new and says exactly what to do what about travelling to work these social distancing measures they were sure to break down if if trains eventually get back to new capacity well if most people can work at home or working at home then theres not the capacity requirement for large numbers of people to be commuting into Central London if you come to places like the east midlands we have weve only got one bit tram lines and we were lying on buses and that can be made to be more frequent not everywhere has achieved chub or Metro Network now places that do have again theyve had 8 weeks to think about how they go to do this and if we dont know exactly how many people are going to be needing to come in to work but the reports of you just highlighted in the news that its much lower than they thought. Lets take a look at how the outbreak has been affecting the Home Missions n. H. S. England as reported 122 fatalities in hospital since yesterday the scottish 1st minister has confirmed 2 more deaths across all settings in scotland while highlighting lower levels of weekend reporting. Wales for a northern ana reporting 6 both also from across all settings the Welsh Government has unveiled over 3750000 pounds of Mental Health funding for schools to support children under 11 meanwhile the Northern Ireland policing borders launched a human rights review into the way police implemented new powers during the outbreak comes off the force was criticised for preventing residents travelling long distances to take exercise and lets now turn to the global numbers and these figures are collated by Johns Hopkins university it gathers worldwide days when over 4700000 people have now been infected over 316000 have lost their lives and more than 1700000 have recovered well with some European Countries gradually lifting lockdowns and the start of the tourist season the World Health Organization was that a 2nd wave may be inevitable this winter meanwhile russia has registered less 9000 new cases bringing levels down to those seen on may the 1st and the leading spanish newspaper has revealed that of the countrys 28000 coronavirus deaths 17 and a half 1000 took place in. Still to come this hour. The government threatens councils one option if base for children going back to school at the beginning of june with liverpool already declaring it wont be reopening to. Them to be used among the government be legally forced to delete data gathered from its content tracing or as soon as the pandemic is over. Yes. Youll. Join me every thursday on the alec simon show and ill be speaking to guests of the world of politics sports business im show business ill see you then. A reopening for English Schools is just around the corner on june the 1st but some authorities claim they wont be following the u. K. Governments dicta on the culture secretary hasnt ruled out taking action to force them. Well i hope that we can all continue to Work Together as one nation. I think if we can get children back to school and its safe to do so and we should really try to do so reception year one in year 6 of you to head back to school by the start of june in england our schools in wales Northern Ireland and scotland may keep their doors shut till september the report not report of gone against the governments reopening time line and will remain closed in june as newcastle Gateshead Councils refused to adopt the stay alert slogan siding with the other home nations on that too. With others joined by teacher and Teaching Union official who works with Liverpool City CouncilDamien Mcnulty he says his councils decision to divide government orders as a matter of life and death is in the best interest of locals. There can be no died the sooner the children come back to school the better but when its safe to do so liverpool for example in the end the areas around marries the site have very high rates of social deprivation the are factor is higher merseyside in liverpool has the highest death rate per 100000 prick over one thing sadly so getting the planning stage right at the open ensuring that there isnt a 2nd spike in the wider transmission across the community that the children live in is crucially important of course we really dont know when were going to achieve absolute certainty that this virus is over and done with do not accept this is always going to be an element of risk in any startup situation absolutely of course listened to teachers are well used to construct in risk assessments when we take children on visits when we plan residential activities we know we can never eliminate risk but what we can do is make sure that we pick can show measures in place and at this point unfortunately the government sequencing timing of how did in one schools opening was the wrong way round and we had the Prime Ministers announcement to some days ago with very little detail about practicalities and what guidance would be in place the guidance has been slowly come in and its still nowhere near comprehensive enough and of course that we need we havent seen the science the science hasnt been shared with us and the government has put had teachers in the government bodies in trustees of the academy just in such a difficult position in terms of trying to get schools open on the 1st of june but of course lets not forget the culture secretary just said in your clip. Will open if safe to do so lets leave it to the professionals lets leave it to the health and safety advisers lets leave it to the representatives lets leave it to the teachers and government bodies to determine when their schools are safe to do so the sooner we can get schools open safely the better for the workforce in the better for the children and meanwhile the confusion caused by different regions doing things differently in relation to the virus is very plain in some parts of the u. K. Not least for those on the borders between 2 regimes as one town is finding out. This road is called Boundary Line obviously the word says explanatory that side there is no england and this side here that were standing on is wales. Im on furlough at the moment i live in england at the minute i work for a company thats in wales so i can go to work as its still short anyway. The Health Secretary has announced a 21000 people have now been hard to carry out Contact Tracing in the u. K. To support the n. H. S. Contact tracing up that hancock said the system was nearing completion despite concerns of privacy. The work of these 21000. 00 people will be supported by the n. H. S. Kovac 19 which were piloting on the isle of wight at the moment and will then roll out across the rest of the country taken together this means that we now have the elements we need to roll out our National Test and tray service the Testing Capacity the tracing capability and the Technology Building that system is incredibly important but so too are the basics but hancocks comments come as a group of m. P. s and peers drafted a bill requiring the government to delete all the data it gathers only up chair the joint committee on human rights Harriet Harman says new government powers required robust legislation to protect the public. We cannot rely on the current failed mishmash of protections that would never envisaged for this situation we need new legislation government collection of our movements and physical contacts that have been on conscionable before but now it is happening part of a completed emergency legislation for new powers it can do it now for new protections. Ukase out trial on the other white should have been available by mid may according to the Health Secretary it allows those with a positive test or showing symptoms of the virus to alert those nearby who they have come in contact with but issues with privacy particularly regarding centralized data gathering of lead to the delay and sex the Health Services innovation arm says that the data will either be deleted or fully anonymous so it can be used for further research. The British Government rejected the decentralized version built by apple and google as used by many other European Countries or to shout of doom and he has more. As countries are rushing to develop these apps the Big Tech Companies like google and apple already mapping out the road ahead theyre laying out the conditions for building the tools which you can trees are due to rollout from next month while huge faith is being placed in Contact Tracing apps there is little solid evidence that they will be effective some are calling on governments to find some real alternatives. Did governments please im sure at last the group is not protective equipment and help get tests back since birth of future condemning thats what not Data Collection theres also the question to be honest about how much control these Big Tech Companies will have all the forcing governments hands given that they already control the Smartphone Market and will get different Digital Tools from competing Companies Even be able to interact with each other the interoperability has been a major blind spot from a technical perspective difficult to get used to one another in germany plans had been afoot to develop an app of course several countries with data being centrally stored it later backed down and its now pursuing proposals promoted by google and apple and. Essentially a solution was decided upon last week and a solution this ensures data is only stored on the device and not in a Central Location we convince the people trust it. That de centralised approach has also been taken by ireland italy and others too while here in france the government has decided to shun big tech and work on its own though any app that it develops may not even fully function with apple new google phones which is potentially rotha problematic and theres concern about the privacy elements while the virus tracing apps are expected to keep sensitive and private data safe as we have seen time and time again not snot always possible that may be one of the reasons why the commission up for justice gave they swarming the apps should be only used during the crisis and the decks cheviots i delayed this when the pandemic is over but that decisions governments take now at a time when there is unprecedented Political Economic and Public Health pressure all the ones that will resonate for years perhaps even decades to come we wont know if iris tracing apps are useful unless significant chunks of the population download and use them but by then it may already be too late mass surveillance may become normalized all in the name of staying healthy even ski auti paris. And that is all from our 2 u. K. At the top of that will be moved to our colleagues at r. T. America from the team again in london thanks for watching and goodbye.
