Well i mean honestly jesse i dont know enough about the science of whats going on right now i just know that the ocean it represents a place for people to you know maybe deal with their anxiety or just take a break from you know the stress that that the pandemic is creating in you know like like i mean i dont think they closed central park and i know that theres theyre trying to create places for people to be able to you know go into nature during during this time i mean the one thing that we do deal with is is that we have such a high volume of people that if they you know leave beaches open you know then youll have you have the problem of you know a large group of people congregating but you know like in hawaii for example all the beaches are open you just have to go directly to the water and then be in the water and come you know and when you come in go to your car and and keep us you know keep keep social distancing but you know its i mean its something that youd have to consider if you dont like is it worth the ticket to it for the sanity you know so i think and thats a thats thats that comes to a bigger question i guess sure now due to the corona outbreak the 2020 a limb picks and japan have been postponed till it least 2021 for now they could get could be back on track to back point in time how do you think the olympics is going to deal with history if it the limpets will happen on time because they now have surfin him 11th attacks which is you need to move yeah well you know i think its a complicated situation because you have so many come you know countries coming from you know. You know safely given what we know at this point now this is the 1st time surfers can compete timea lympics now the competition is is limited to short boards do you know any of the competitors and are there unique challenges for surfers compared to other athletes who compete milad backs well and i if im not mistaken theyre there theyre going to im not sure where theyre running it if theyre running it in a wave you know generating. You know paul up there if in that kind of a thing you have a you know you have a. You know reliability with you know with that that kind of allows surfers you know a little bit more of an even platform that mean the real issue really is is that you know we need waves and the ocean in storms and create the create the surf and so you know its hard to have that on you know at 12 oclock noon on sunday and thats always been the issue with kind of you know say putting subjecting surfing in the art of surfing to you know kind of the constraints of trying to you know of a gather you know a gathering in a sport. Type type platform but you know i had theres some young at the surface from every different country so we have some surfers that that i know some of the younger guys that are that are going to try to qualify for the olympics i mean again you know were still. Itll be the 1st time and so itll be interesting to see you know how how they how they you know how they pull that off but its just one you know its its i think its difficult for me as a noncompetitive surfer to understand sometimes the way you know the way these formats work its going to be a little bit like like gymnastics where you might be sometimes confused by the outcome. Not now laird youve said previously youd like to see standup paddleboard racing in the olympics that would be very interesting wouldnt it why do you think paddleboarding has yet to be included you know im not sure i think i think we need a demo part of it i think its because we dont have enough of an organized tour around stand up paddling the fact is for you know it would go really well kind of with all of the paddling events that they have in the olympics in you know again its racing it would be time distance i mean these are really definable measurements so easy to determine you know a winner in a loser but. Yeah i think i think a lot of it has to do with that week that there isnt a much as much organisation in the in the professional aspect of stand up that mostly its being done being done recreationally i think thats whats causing. The delay but theres no doubt in my mind that stand up talent will be in a limbic discipline you know will it be in the surveying you know category or will it be in the racing category and it would make more sense to me to be in the racing category now your books offer ways for people to stay positive and see pappy ness we need that right now more than ever i think give us some tips on how people can do this well you know i think i think you know somebody asked me just recently i was asked. You know where i get my courage from and and i said and it was and it was actually the 1st time that id been kind of thought about that question and the answer surprised me a little bit but that but it but it made the most sense was that i got it through faith and that and believing that believing right with thats where i got my courage from believing that id be ok believing i could do it believing in you know you believing in that there is you know something greater in that something thats keeping everything held together and and you know and i think that thats i think thats something that we can use it to be positive and to give us strength is to know that you know i mean gabby my wife is asked me before you know sometimes were in the you know in a in a in a in a time you know weve been through some hurricanes in some fires in some different some floods and some other kind of stressful situations and you know ive said before you know its been ok we are ok its going to be ok and so i think theres something to be said but i know that you know that taking care of yourself that eating good sleeping well 3 and you know trying to nurture your system definitely gives you a fighting chance i think that if youre you know if youre not taking good care of yourself and youre not getting good sleep you know i think that that you know that can lead to negativity when you dont feel good that you get depressed and so that its hard to be positive and so i think that you have to really nurture the system have the you have to to take care of yourself especially when were being taxed like were being taxed right now so you know psychologically emotionally physically i mean up the fear of the fact is the fear of. Death you know and right now death has a name and a description i think were always in danger of dying i think peoples relationship d. It isnt very very very good in general the majority of the people i think and so that spirit thats being you know and the fear is being kind of cultivated because its. Motivate sometimes persuade people through fear and you know you parenting are telling your kids hey if you dont do this youre going to this is going to happen so i think its a pretty him and thing but i think we need to kind of embrace doubt a little bit. Being scared that its ok and you know and kind of start to deal with our relationship with fear but also a lot of the our relationship with death that you know were all going to die we thats theres no way around that on how it how its going to happen and when its going to happen we dont know but we do need to be realistic about it and that and not for 10 like its not going to happen because because that will lead i think to. A pretty pretty scary exist. Laird youre an expert surfer but but in your book you talk about the joy of being a big hitter a big giving surfer. Why is it a good thing to be a beginner and subject yourself to failure well i think that that thats where the greatest. You know the greatest rewards are i think when youre drunk you know great at something and you just do it a little better you know that thats thats nice but you dont get the fulfillment that you get when you. When you start something that you can do and then you eventually develop and to use you know a skilled or even an expert at it i think that increment of of success are much greater when youre learning and i think its really healthy for us i think its when we actually excel you know its its you know when were when you when you see a little kid and and they and everythings new in their lives and theyre always learning and theyre not good at anything i think theyre you know the rewards of that you know are really great and i think they continue to be great but as we get older we stop wanting to subject ourselves to to failure you know our feel or our ferro failure and stay in in our safe comfort zone you know just doing things that were good at i think its important to subject themselves things that you want your good out in and through that i think you gets better you know greater fulfillment. Now before we go youre also a huge strong voice for the environment laird your travel all over the world with your surfing and water things give me quickly how is the Ocean Holding up today because i have great concerns when i walk the beaches of the baja of plastic coming and being recycled back up at me at the beach whats your opinion how is the Ocean Holding up well you know i think wed all agree if were conscious and aware that you know that the earth is sick and and and were feeling some of that you know we feel the repercussions of that and obviously that you know the ocean is the majority of the face of the planet and and its the most conductive and i think we can feel energetically that the ocean isnt doing well i know that were you know were fishing it out to exhaustion were dumping our pollution in it you know we i mean i have seen just the. Weather patterns and just you know a lot of the you know of the of the just the dominant features you know that the patterns have or are changed and were getting you know summer in the winter and winter in the summer and fall in the spring and spring in the fall i mean this theres a real you know theres just that the ocean needs are care i you know i honestly believe in the future that that will will need to to to protect it you know well have to protect it through vigilance i think that will that that will. Need a you know the ocean will need you know a special forces group just to protect it because they lost that rules will stop the destruction and i think people are just they dont care in the us and and i think its important to get people to participate in being in the ocean.
