S. Was officially seen as a global superpower and it was the u. S. That helped the world win this war but is that actually correct well talk more about this i am joined by the host of politicking Larry King Larry its my 1st time meeting you virtually its an honor to talk to you today now larry 1st things 1st of all i know how thrilled you must be i really am you know i am thrilled because you and i actually share the same birthday now then i wasnt even a thought in my grandmothers mind when this was going on back in 1905 but you were actually 12 years old when this big surrender was announced do you remember that they had all. Oh i do yeah now it was a big day but it wasnt the end the war because we had another year in the pacific is suzi end of the war in europe and i was a tremendous down member of how happy everyone was and we were gathering on the streets but it got bigger a year later when the japanese surrendered but this was the german surrender we made it unconditional that is there were no conditions to their period they had to surrender on this date and as you said 400000 died yeah and there is a lot of the American History books though that are necessarily correct what did america get right and what did america get wrong in terms of world war 2 larry what we got right about i thought we were right in. Absolutely right going to war i thought the a bomb im still not the a bomb ended the world war 2 completely in the following year im still not sure whether it was right to use it world war 2 could not have been won without the russians russians came from the the americans came from the west and hitler made an incredible mistake he turned away from he was bombing london daily stub doorknob and turned to the russian front and thats stalin grotty got wiped out and russia won that war for us we we could not have run it without russia russians in one or the us it was combined of the 22. 00 countries russia and the United States ended that war in europe and you know you actually just brought my point my next point up there and i know many are going to say this because this is r t but you know the americans like i have mentioned they did lose almost 40900000 man russia actually lost 24000000 people both civilian and military deaths like you just mentioned russia we could not have won this war without them that is. That why do you think that they dont get a lot if not most of the credit for helping the United States get help when really cause the cause of the cold war occurred almost right after that and we. Churchill was the one who turned to the cold war and he said that we now have empire we were fighting the communists and once churchill said that he made that speech in the United States. Turned into another kind of war in one shooting war and as that we were tended in america to not give the russians credit when obviously in retrospect world war 2 could not have ended without the russians and. We should all be thankful that the way those people held up my cousin served in world war 2 and he met up with Many Russians in germany at the end that are war and we were very thankful to have them and they were thankful to have us coming from a wish for could not have been one as you point out without both countries russia and the United States defeating germany and you know Larry Summers story and they say that the u. S. After world war 2 you know the u. S. We were actually looked at seriously as a global superpower that at the time you also again as we mentioned you had russia that was 12 so after these 2 countries are fighting on the same side of the war now having hostilities towards each other how does that happen and why did how does this change the history. In changed we was our fight against communism communism was our next mortal enemy patton or or the American General he wanted to go right through to russia after we got into germany he wanted to take on the russians in in battle which would have been insane looking back at it but it was all communism versus capitalism tom ism became americas enemy and the rest is history it took a long while for that cold war to end some people think its still going on. Now larry when it comes to the master interviewer you are considered the go which is why im excited to talk to you the greatest of all time and youve interviewed hundreds of people are there any interviews that stand out to you that you know kind of are related to world war 2 any memory or monumental answer that you encountered about it what can what can you tell us oh ive done ive done many many interviews with members of the American Government interviewed russians. I was very fortunate to be placed in a position of having the opportunity i guess ive interviewed. All of us people guess of it a 1000000 ive been doing it 63 years so the memories dont pop up to quickly but i interviewed many of the world war 2 generals at the end and then they went on to fight in korea. You know it seems weve never stopped fighting. It was a sad sad day that war ever was and i still have never figured something out why do people kill each other while war makes no sense war is insanity. Yet we keep on keepin on we just told you a war somewhere. Now we have a war against a virus. Which is a worldwide war in which we better shot up with our and our allies shot a whole world yeah yeah but youre absolutely right larry i couldnt have said it better myself to my new Birthday Party buddy larry king thank you so much for coming on and talking to us see you next time youll remember jeanne. Thanks larry. Iran vows a crushing response of a u. S. Led campaign to extend a u. N. Arms embargo is approved by the Security Council can iran count on russia and china were going to discuss that with our guests and later over in the sports h. Q. Regina hamm has some big news about one of the greatest hockey players ever to hit the ice youre not going to want to miss it were back into. The underlying narrative some call it a myth of American Foreign policy is the countrys exceptional position on the world stage this is the artist in consensus no longer the reality is very different the Global Pandemic has demonstrated the u. S. Should focus on its own exceptional. The world is. Shaped by. Thinks. We dare to ask. I. Know its an obvious right that side by iranian president Hassan Rouhani when talking about lifting a United Nations arms embargo on to run later this year however the United States wants and plans to extend that embargo to which ronnie threatened a quote crushing response so for more on this and all thats going on we welcome investigative journalist Gareth Porter garrett thanks so much for joining us now last month secretary of state mike pump aoe started this process to extend this arms embargo that is set to end this coming october so why all of this reaction today and now why. Well i think its because the United States has been taking the initiative politically to raise this issue and make it a propaganda theme. Primarily because its the United States this really pushing this theres really nobody else in the world who is it is eager to take this message up its part of the propaganda theme of that the Trump Administration has been sounding ever since my own pail became secretary of state and its really aimed at portraying iran as more or less a defeated state or defeated nation that does not have the normal International Rights and privileges of the other state in the International System i mean theyre saying that iran does not have the right to have and its own weapons of it does not have the right to defend itself this is part of a larger theme that is has been built up over the last couple of years so so its really part of a broader effort to promote the idea that iran irans government is really not long for this world that regime change is still possible this is the thing that might come pay it was very fond of of trying to get across to the world now look at the other side according to the International Atomic Energy Agency it says iran is going to run a minute lee no longer is complying with several elements of the nucular deal to which thats why the u. S. Administration believes it has a case to make that the embargo should not be lifted what say you. Well the iranians have every right to pull back from full compliance with the joint deal that the joint the j. C. B. Away if you will because the United States had promised as part of that deal which was absolutely central to the deal that it would in fact and all of the sanctions economic sanctions against iran that had to do with this Nuclear Program and of course now the Trump Administration has torn up that part of the deal and is acting as though there is no agreement that that would would cause iran to be able to to have its full full exercise of its economic rights in the world system and so you know under International Law there is no question that iran has the right to to selectively withdraw from parts of the agreement and thats exactly what theyve done however theyve made it clear as i think most of your listeners or all of them are aware they made it very clear that they are ready to negotiate. A a return of fully to their responsibilities under the j. C. V. O. A. If the United States goes back and agrees to carry out its fundamental commitments under that agreement now here at the u. S. Is trying to muster up any allies that it can obviously to get on the bandwagon of extending these embargoes do we know who strong with on iran. Well i can tell you who is really opposed to it i think the europeans dont dont want to have anything to do with a with an arms embargo against iran i think that you know perhaps the british might be willing to go along with us on this but definitely russia is not going to support it china is not going to support it its clear that they believe that when this embargo and is in october under the u. N. Security Council Resolution of 2015 that iran will have full rights to have to to be able to trade with other countries and get armaments as well i might add as to the to export armaments to its own l. O. s and by the way this has been part of the u. N. Supposedly this been part of the u. N. Security Council Resolution that its not supposed to be able to export but of course Everybody Knows that iran has been doing it and thats been a dead letter from the very beginning and you know you mentioned the u. N. Security council to piggyback off of that they actually endorse the 2015 nuclear deal between tehran and world powers as we know President Donald Trump he pulled america out of the deal back in 2018 and as we saw imposed harsher sanctions on iran this decision though on to lift or not to lift it could alternately come down to that same u. N. Security council so what do you think the outcome will be gareth. I have no doubt that that this of ending of the ban on armaments. The ability of iran to buy armaments on the international in the International Arena is going to go through its not going to be reversed by the United States so theres no way they can do that the Security Council is going to have to be unanimous in order to restore that and its impossible that that could happen i mean so so the United States is again i would just emphasize that this is part of the propaganda offensive more than anything else and this of course just just to recall a little bit of history thats extremely important the United States has been carrying out its own arms embargo and getting others to join them arms embargo against iran since iran was created back in 1079 as soon as the iran iraq war began u. S. Imposed. All right well Gareth Porter investigative journalist thanks so much for talking to us today gareth see next time. Thank you.
