A new vituss it is disingenuous for anyone to classify themselves as this the frontline doctor is the best expert since he or she will be following the progress of this condition for us time and sham means its we have to have a very controlled strategy for it the virus is on the island and we cant be in lockdown until a vaccine and finally on a lighter note media white says hello alex ive never seen your hair longer disobedient the lockdown style stacie. Not only are we all living through the uniquely frightening circumstances of the greatest Health Crisis for 100 years but right no one thought of the population of this planet more than 2000000 people are experiencing some sort d of a lot of the structure and social interaction are thrown to him a clearly probably britains best known behavioral psychologist because of our work and Morning Television to tell me what advice can be given to people suffering from these unique circumstances. Emma welcome to the oh and simon chill thanks for having may. Remember mona 6 clovelly situation with one thought of the planet more than 2000000000 people worldwide gauged in some sort of clumped some sort of lockdown of society or governments struggle to cope with the pandemic importance do the social isolation what particular issues design threw up in terms of Mental Health i hear quite a lot of people saying well the difference between being socially isolated and basically he then prevent presents with Mental Health issues for example suicidality the difference is that you can cops that well actually cam so who globally reports d that if you are a victim of some day who around you is taken are likely become impressively higher to the chance of taking your own life so actually things like suicidality is catching whether we want to talk about that or the whys and social isolation is absolutely a precursor of that type of behavior so the idea that people are just managing their Mental Health whilst completely isolated feeling strict success freedom and on top of that not having access to services that they should be having access to which are already overstretched are not very helpful in the most parts of the general population because it just isnt the capacity we absolutely are facing a disaster as far as Mental Health is concerned i am not necessarily consent right now i am hugely concerned about the next 12 months when trauma hits and its not just about the Mental Health of individuals who are dealing with those kind of from my Mental Health issues its those who are the victims in individuals who are also domestically abusive which affect Mental Health and thats all around the world i think were in a really catastrophic experience in the future and some of the issues which have been thrown up in this crisis through the stories about the elderly not be had. Method to the hospital the controversy over have them unity in the outset at least of this crisis in the United Kingdom would these are to the the difficulties by making all the people feel that theyre regarded as somehow expendable in terms of official policy i think that to be made to feel that you are expendable is a terrifying experience that anybody and dont get me wrong i think its so important that we have a pragmatist and an acceptance of death i really do but i dont think that we should have a situation where one life seems much more important than another because that would be detrimental to the whole argument of meaning and lets look of the opposite of isolation the family pressures of lot bowman youre a a mother of 2 to largs so any advice you could give to people how you how you told it proximity as opposed to isolation. One of the most important pieces of advice for any player is i would never lie to you because im a useless teacher and i can guarantee that the reason i never trained to be one business because i cant teach my own children i appreciate that so festival i think that your small wins are important this time if youre like me and youre not the most able to educate your teenage boys so Young Children take the pressure off if you can create intimacy in bonding if you can give yourself space and time to just really provide the experience youre having with a situation where theres not a lot of pressure on the education theres a lot of hope and opportunity for you to kind of connect to the family do fun things that would be my number one ticket secondly cabin fever is completely normal or strange features from to self by the same people day in day out constantly 20 47 d without the and get better annoyed at times but the most important thing to remember is when you feel frustrated and angry often its because you want to externalize a difficult feeling directs varian say so instead of projecting that and externalizing get just take a step because the reality is that every single emotion we have is a problem so if you are straight it is not actually being told to go and have a go at one of your children you being told to go come down take some space our feelings skagit being taught to go to sleep it gives you courage and so on and so forth so i think that People Living in their own homes with children sometimes in one room thats another thing you know the economic to eat in the u. K. Is substantial so know that its understandable to have these difficult feelings know its understandable at times to feel that youre not doing the best job with your kids forgotten education accept that thats perfectly alright and recognise that in the end or the people will take over well return to normal reframe that this is no mature a and just connect with the things that give you the most contempt and which in my case is just spending a lot of nice time with my kids not doing that not so much with them. Lets look a little dark aside the farm little lucian ships it was clearly out of the law that the authorities the police would really want to the bottom up subs and Domestic Violence and abuse it will be right to be concerned is that the way that things are playing no. Majorly right to be concerned and majorly right to understand that this is how its going to play out absolutely we know that homicide its what we know that Domestic Abuse is so and its just completely commonsensical you know in does it matter how much training you have or no training the point is that you know that if you take a situation where people are looked with abusive individuals and you dont necessarily have access it saves services that you would have or you may be afraid that even if you are in danger in your home you might also be in danger if you leave it that paradigm in itself is a juxtaposition in danger of that i mean danger in here this is the place i now see that for you at risk children are at risk i absolutely am terrified it keeps me up at night this im terrified about the children who are being abused in their own homes and there are voices most of the time but what changes their voice is the teacher who notices and its often the teacher or the friend in the playground to tell or the person that they confide in in dinner hour theyre the people who make a difference to those childrens lives and right now those kids a locked up with predators in their own home with no voice childline have gone through the roof in children bringing in thats only the kids brave enough to pick up the phone and we know for a fact because weve seen the statistics regarding obese situations in place call outs so this is a real problem and like i said my big fear is not necessarily right now in the eye of the storm its whats going to play out in the next 6 to 12 months when we find out just how catastrophic this was to those kind of individuals i mean personally ive had 4 suicides in the past you know month and a half that its just been completely out of my experience the such a long time ive never had such a consolidated amount of loss and i imagine thats going to be the same with murders and it said the same with Domestic Abuse and were clearly some of the most difficult stories that weve have individual stories it during this crisis have been people explaining how difficult it has been not to be able to see a proper goodbye of your well to the loved ones that must be extraordinary almost unprecedented situation in terms of the the pressure about some people can you give us some insight them and how families and individuals can handle such such an experience. I think that one of the most important parts of losing someone is ritual and i think ritual in the u. K. Might just mean you know we spend a little bit of time with our loved one after the event we might go and visit then the funeral home or for more modern we might keep my home we know in places like ireland thats what happens and when you think about the actual funeral you connect with lots of people who commit share stories and you kind of have this moment to react serious where even though its tragic in all 4 you can just allow yourself to have that Mutual Community grieving and its powerful its really powerful for the fact that thats not going to happen the fact that the only a few of you might be able to even go to the funeral and in that case be socially distancing meaning the dont have the intimacy and connection of the people that you love around and how catastrophic that is certainly having gone through my own fathers death and having a big funeral and dealing with all of those experiences you know in quite a linear perspective its still incredibly difficult to manage so to see people now saying goodbye to children at times you know children with life limiting issues that then die and not being able to have that time with them i cannot imagine how that will add to the trauma i cant envisage how anybody will avoid it being traumatizing so i think the nots who are most explored the impact this is mental and physical is something that i think weve got it wrong from really honest about really honest. Weve got it wrong its what i think its a lot of. People trying to face some of the practical effects also have severe problems of stress i mean food for the family loss of income loss of job loss of business childrens prospects of the good to be able to suffer because of examinations and not being able to have the normal teacher start the serious individual practical pressures that perhaps the much of the official guy is missing i believe the things that barebone and working families the most deprived community the most disenfranchised individuals within because. They also want already suffering in our communities theyve already been suffering in my life what to try to highlight what can those communities to munch in that adding this layer i think i think even more problematic for them really short sighted and i do think at the moment the reason that people arent allowing themselves to think about teacher is because it was really scary and it comes back down to the only time that we can really help people from emotional Mental Health and wellness and that comes down to me in that hierarchy of needs if one doesnt listen to view the could be Mental Health tidal wave and the aftermath of this Health Crisis other than some things that we might be able to cling on to to make Society Better in the aftermath of this terrible epidemic. For years and years in is psychologists therapists all of the people here where can Mental Wellness and charities have said there is a very simple rule to happiness is that the western philosophy denies it takes you away it says by this and youll be happy by that and youll be happy and weve been telling forever listen look at your physical how look at your Nutritional Health look at your Mental Health surround yourself with people who look for you and get you and dont worry about people that dont know you and dont care where you spend time doing things that youre passionate for and also remember that whilst youre breathing and dealing with the winter of this world you are rich beyond measure stop by again to the capitalist myth that makes you unhappy they follow your own dreams and stick with the people who follow them with you that is the recipe so if you want to know why youve been happy chairing this pandemic mostly its because youve spoken to your neighbors d he spent time missing the people that you love youve been joy to about the fact that the 70 community meshes thats taking place and you felt part of something they get the new take that rest of pay a make it the rest of your life because that is your answer. And mccamey for manchester thank you very much indeed take a. Journalist after the break we will focus attention on the particular mental pressures being suffered by those of the front line in the killing professions there memphiss services as they struggle to cope with the crew of the virus crisis. Youre sitting somewhere i. Just lets see i guess. I was on the floor some days in my bathroom you know trying praying. Yes its time for us to die worms i was having children fever i didnt have any sense of say so smell has been the most you want to go with you. Recently she you know sometimes orders you to. Simon the song sounds like the research. I have heard and. Push myself to do for me in the 58 im going to. Go. Buyers will buy i dont buy it id rather it. Was a right as are some of my age in the future track our guys are. Welcome back but were going to look at the psychological impact of combating this virus by the people on the front line more than the Health Service the killing services there lisa commonness the member of parliament for the score by stephen west but here goes she joins me from so far with a common welcome back to the salmon chill thank you very much now youre believing are a Cross Party Group are for some 70 parliamentarians members of parliament for westminster members of the house of lords whove been pressing the government very hard on taking initiatives to to look hard at the psychological impact of noise in the front line one should aim an intention behind us and most of its really really important that we treat Mental Health and physical health this area teach because what we know is that staff who are on the frontline are going to be seeing saying high levels of trauma and we have staff who are losing colleagues we have staff here coping with a high number or 3 minutes in at work places where the may have been cheating for people for many years and it was people are sadly dying due to this pandemic we also have a new staff who have come off training courses and are on the front line who want to do their best and we nor that theyre going to be exposed to high levels of trauma at our night and very intense and long ayers and a cheating high levels all the bettas teach and therefore its only right that really captures your Mental Wellbeing at this time alongside that of your physical health. A former life before you were elected as a member of parliament you were a clinical psychologist in the national Health Service so you must have a substantial insight into the particular pressures of those in the front line. Well its true to say that i forte and for a long time in my career as a psychologist and Mental Health has been at the forefront of my career prior to coming into parliament is something that we must to very much more in relation to sporting the general public in terms of awareness and seeking help and its also something that we must protect staff particularly at times of crisis and we know that the World Health Organization have recommended psychological 1st aid in times when we have crises to deal with and staff are on the front line so were pressing the government that really the response has to include telephone hotlines it has to include psychological 1st aid to try to prevent pushed disorder developing and those start well on the front line care for possible and it also has to involve a longer term plan for psychological interventions for dogs who need more intense support and towards the latter stages and in following waves off the crew in a virus as that develops over time not come and go to look at some of the part where aspects of this is so reported and were all grateful for the national Health Service of not really they want well and terms of this versus violence but nonetheless the a huge pressure on Staff Members can you give us a moment cite them to what these are we know that the working time regulations for doctors have been relaxed and therefore theyre working extremely long hours way beyond often the working time regulations that we reject commands for peoples safety and well being they want to be doing extra this time they want to be ensuring that patients have care but we have to be really caucus and all the impact kuan then their Mental Wellbeing and physical health but also that their. And the overall impact basically theyre putting their lives on hold risking themselves and their families theres a huge amount of things i teach regarding having adequate protections in terms of personal protective equipment for doctors and for all staff at the frontline nurses cure workers except so when you combine all those factors and in addition to the trauma that theyre going to be exposed to in such high levels at this point in time we know that we have to a lot to support them and in terms of their well being and that we must take a holistic approach to that including Mental Wellbeing or else for going to have a tsunami of Mental Health issues after theyre stunned and it vanishes as we know the violence covered one theme can be fatal for ima be of any age but there has been a particular pressure on older people not just those on care homes but people in terms of the social isolation of not being able to to see friends and family and grandchildren what is the substantial psychological impact on the Elderly Population a more many of these people believe that theyre being left behind them in terms of the government policy absolutely and fact that all Party Parliamentary group for disability that i to writing to government this speech and we have a meeting with the disability minister by those very issues people are feeling that have been cut off from their support networks and not 16 only important for water adults who perhaps depend upon the care system we need to be making sure that those who are most wonderful and our society are used and the adequate support at this point in time that they need in order to call but what is a massive chain. Its in addition to things i not going to be unexpected that many many people will develop symptoms of depression as they feel were isolated and cut a hole from their natural d. T. G. Supports that are very protective factors against Mental Health problems no response so if you had your parliamentary cost Party Parliamentary group from ministers i know youve said you have a meeting coming up this week but how there been any indications from government the able to take on board the the point youre making about particular psychological pressure on the caring professions yes and very much so i understand from the. Special Advisory Group meetings that they have been looking at this in more detail and. Theres a hotline that is available for staff quite intact we very much recommended that thats extended from any test after all staff when the frontline sudar no one is left behind and were supporting everyone where we need to be doing so but what we need to be doing is teaching it forward in terms of and Government Support for psychological 1st aid as recommended by the World Health Organization and to prevent exchange disorder wherever possible listen come and we know that some countries thus far managed to handle the pandemic much better than others are the only examples of International Best practice for for those looking at the psychological impact on the caring professions of study the actual letter of the pipers of other countries where do you see inspiration coming from that we should follow in terms of getting the best outcomes for those in the front line we know that with sars and most of the other types of pandemic that have them packed into other countries that the psychological crack bases for the pole and coming. Waves that it doesnt come all at one point in time so its important that we have this long terran Delivery Plan and thats whats needed in terms all supporting Mental Wellbeing for staff and not just our Occupational Health level and the n. H. S. Exception but for the was in cheerfulness at for its always right across the front line we need access to that but the oaks who are going to access will roll on the period of time with stepped up here where people can have interventions at the level that they require and at the tightening that they require in order just to and based at meet their Mental Health needs so its going to be very much a staged and long tear impact its very much a marfan in terms of Mental Health rather than a spent and i think the government starting to teach that board in the special advisor groups and professions are being put in place at the current time and it was issues are being know in detail to make sure that base practice is to fail to across the u. K. Theyve been there for us and if you only have to tip it for them its only right otherwise its actually meant to society if we were to let people die who have put themselves on the line for us at this important point in time with a common as a clinical psychologist on the member of parliament thinking about your personal experiences as a scribe this is unfolded as i have nothing what it says may just say very something has to be done but when terms of the psychological aspects of this pandemic and equally as a some story from your own constituency perhaps which has been a of example so inspiring youve said theres this is exactly the sort of thing that community should be doing for the spawn to this crisis well as a member of parliament i really want to be using all of the knowledge understanding and. Its expertise that ive given to make you your own psychology to try to meet sure that this practice is right across the United Kingdom and that staff on services are protected and also the general public has the supports in place not the need and i think as parliamentarians its been spiritual to see each doctors and nurses terri m. P. s and going back to the front line to do their bit and am very much planning to do the same as the Mental Health resources and support sort of to not only succumb im from so while im sure thank you very much indeed. Every one of us is living through extraordinary times more than one phone of the entire population of this planet have already been in some form of lockdown as governments across the world have struggled to cope with a covert pandemic. Despite these draconian measures over free 1000000 people who have already contract of the virus on their own a quarter of a 1000000 are already dead over these figures are likely to be substantial and the estimates and were only at the beginning of this virus is deadly toll it should be said the are some glimmers of hope there are countries large and small east and west developed an underdeveloped those who are of fall of the World Health Organization advice on contact for missing who have thus far managed to hold this virus be those. Others have been much less successful. As the World Health Organization have informed us the epicenter of corona virus is commonly not in the east will it started but in europe and north america this could change over time it may yet be that Africa South America will be ravaged by come on a virus and feel the full impact of its deadly toll however no country however successful in tackling the pandemic itself can be insulated from the Economic Quarter wasnt which will surely follow and the psychological problems which we have discussed today which have been described as a tsunami which will surely come in the aftermath of the pandemic the psychological effects of both short term and long term they are likely to be massive i will never underestimate the most precious commodity of all the power of the human spirit in the end hope that keeps us all alive and i from just me number self and all the crew is goodbye for no stay safe and well see you next week.
