Ross knocking joe biden and the democrats im joined by my guest Richard Goodstein an old bridge he is a democratic strategist and a former adviser to bill and Hillary Clinton and in new york im joined by how when she was in city she is in american journalist with r. T. Her writings are collected at how one of destroy dot com or across Something Else in effect that means you can jump in anytime you want and i always appreciate it let me go to you 1st. You have to tell me youre really super excited about joe biden is your nominee right coming really ok because your party got. Peter i am super excited when i look at the polls and i see that the American People have come to their senses i guess you know im not Donald Trumps biggest fan and when i see. Notwithstanding the fact that there is this usual rally around the flag it gracing a president during a time of crisis and thats happening in every other country on the planet and virtually every state in the United States dollar tax rates went up and now theyre back down to where theyve been and joe biden is beating him by 6789 whites in some of the big respectable polls so that does excite me that yes fair enough fair enough ok the National Polls mean nothing at this point and if you compare it to 2016 joe isnt doing that well hillary was doing much better ok having said that when he going to win here let me you know let me go to hell and ellen. The real issue here is within the Democratic Party itself and its really centered on Bernie Bernie sanders ok they finally got him out ok they rallied their forces the media came in to save the day as well and it really gets down to the bernie bros and i dont use that term in a project pejorative way as many but i know a lot of bernie bros and they are firm and very smart people they have just much gumption as conservatives do this and we disagree but helen it really gets down to the progressive part of the party are they going to be won over by joe because joe has given them nothing to did. Yeah i mean the good the ones who voted for hillary back in 2016 will probably fall in line behind joe personally i dont understand why people were willing to live up to her bernie this time around after he basically threw them under the bus and 1016. 00 telling them to vote for a candidate that went against everything that he stood for and now hes done that again so i think in the same were all the progressive us would probably try to vote 3rd party of course not living in the same world as many recent events have made clear but biden is not going to excite the progressive vote i think a lot of people stay home and i think a lot of people will vote part its ok well richard how he says will joe biden reach out to be aggressive in any meaningful way because i have to agree with how and i mean bernie was on some not late night talk show when he was asked a very important question do you think joe can we didnt and he said yes and then ever all of us are saying why are you running ok and what was the last 4 years all about what was the last election all about because i would contend and i think you would probably agree with me that hes going to need a lot of progress across to you know get over the line to win because the party is very fractured so the same question i mean is joe going to give them anything because i see a lot of anxious on the part of bernies supporters and nks against bernie himself go ahead richard. So lets talk about this through the prism of issues Bernie Sanders is currently in favor of habeas many people have health care as possible joe biden was instrumental as an aside when we got the Affordable Care act passed donald trump is in court today trying to strip tens of millions of people coverage who it creates this in condition so with progressives really care about issues like who has health care and who doesnt this is not a close call lets take Climate Change as an example barack obama and joe biden push very progressive Climate Change proposals having to do with the Power Industry and others and sign on to the paris climate deal donald trump says that Climate Change is a hoax so if progressives these people who backed Bernie Sanders really care about addressing Climate Change this existential threat this is not a close call you go issue by issue lets take gun violence barack obama and joe biden have pushed ways in which we should limit access to guns not interfering with the 2nd amendment god forbid but making sure that we reduce gun violence double trouble things we should do nothing other than get its guns in as many hands as possible so progressive presumably care about that too so you go issue by issue peter and this is not actually a close call in 2016 these people who were people who either voted for trump or voted 3rd party thought at what differences may respond when we now know with the implications of don trip when you get are so people who supported parties and if they really care about the future of the country and the issues this is not a close call. Well ok but i think you know again if you look at the complexity of the Democratic Party what it what it because now that joe wants to embrace the obama legacy well what about those 5500000 people that were thrown out of their homes when barack obama saved the banks so youd wall street in and main street in people when homeless ok if that is at the normal we want to go back to because i dont see much of the legacy of barack obama that is all about appealing he sold out to the banks and big and to special interests like they always do when they get into power donald trump is doing the same thing dont misunderstand me ok but how and i mean you know richards got a point on some of those points right there but theres a fundamental difference is that the needs of workers particularly right now who is losing their home their health care its not because of donald trump per se its because millions and millions of people are losing their jobs ok thats what that that is ok i think that for a lot of people joe biden is a retread that was very unimpressive and i think here and heres my question to you and i think the democrats did you know we huge disservice by having such a. An interesting lackluster primary job was never even challenged on his record ok what did he particularly of all those debates he hardly had to defend his his record because nobody would go in there because of democratic orthodoxies ok because when he comes up against trump trump is going to go for animal on him weve already seen the ads go ahead and now and go to new york yet theyre basically counting on people having this sort of haziness style just in the obama era where nobody really remembers what happened in the obamacare which was as you said of massive thing theyll outs millions of people being thrown out of their homes the Affordable Care act which was supposed to provide universal health care was actually begin to enter the Insurance Industry as insurance premiums have gone up since then well not a lot especially when the individual mandate made it so that people you had to pay for insurance or you got. Tax penalty so that wasnt a good thing for the very very many poor people who still have health care and now at least the individual mandate is gone so people can and who cant afford health care and who make too much to get on the medicare plans but dont make enough to actually be able to afford Quality Health care and those people were out of luck and theyre still going to be out of luck because biden has said hell veto medicare for all so i mean people who dont really remember the obama era very well might get excited about joe biden and as you said the democrats didnt challenge him on his record at all because theyre hoping that those people dont remember the obama years very well and its counting on peoples amnesia is really a poor strategy for running a Winning Campaign i mean the only thing that i can think of theyre going to try to make it all about the v. P. And then biden just kind of change into the background and whether they pick the 2nd in command completely circumventing the voters which is were already hearing so much hype about people like stacy abrams who hasnt won any election in 10 kilometers who of course voters proved early on that they didnt like and that was fortunate khabar took her out on the debate stage but nobody got a chance to take i think his promise it wouldnt do it so i dont know that i think the democrats might have realized they can live with another term of donald trump because he hasnt you know and in any war and he hasnt stopped giving out money to get on him so were asking democrats which dont start a lot theyre going to i think i think to really deliver the baby which richard i think with this election i think is very interesting because of the in the role that Bernie Sanders played in the primary he was very strong base ok i mean a unique base of people giving individual donations to and small donations i mean they did master that part of the campaign except the the master of the message was failed Bernie Sanders egotist didnt have the fire in his belly to win but what i think is interesting about this election is that maybe for the 1st time in a long time anyway this voting. Or the lesser of 2 evils may not be in play because i think it is you said i think a lot of people i want maybe sounds and i think a lot of people to sit this one out i think it is going to sit it out particularly progressives going to say im not going to play your game anymore we never get anything from you ever ok we bend the knee we kiss the ring and then you forget about us ok i think a lot of people would say were not going to play that game anymore what do you say to them richard. I disagree on a couple counts 1st barack obama sounds like you and hello are in the same boat you dont think much of this presidency everything all the other democrats come through left i come from the right ok obviously thing i just say if you ask democrats whether they would take iraq obama over donald trump course i think even helen would concede that would not be close to right and barack obama characterized joke by as having the single most progressive platform of any democratic nominee ever and thats not much play time turning out some people i think instead hold on and weve seen turnouts weve seen turnout sky high not just frankly in the primaries this year but going back literally since the day after donald trump which went on great you take city and state at local races let alone the congressional races in 2018 and through the primaries this year democrats are chomping at the bit to have an opportunity to undo the damage that donald trump has done and again maybe you know held probably got some people that she thinks of who think that perfection should be the enemy that good but most democrats dont think that and most democrats are horrified at the japanese that donald trump has done to the country and jill thin for 4 years unchecked by having to answer to the voters that will motivate democrats if nothing else well again helen so what is the sterling reputation road record of joe biden you know this is a Short Program i cant keep. You mean too much time to think about that. Go ahead yes i mean he voted for the 994 crime bill which unprecedented numbers of black men in jail for crimes that still serving sentences for 20 years later that he could see he voted to. I mean. Its a Successful Program but hes been behind a whole lot of awards he voted for the iraq war he seemed people didnt vote for the iraq war and voted for the war in afghanistan hes a well actually he was Vice President during the during the war in libya and syria and during the other war in iraq he voted for and. We cant forget about christmas because im sure donald trump is the real answer is with a vengeance. And china and china ok i so i mean i noticed the dueling ads that came out very very interesting this is going to be a Nasty Campaign or im going to jump in here and this is your program were going to go to a short break and after that short break well continue our discussion on joe biden and the democrats. This is a story about what happens austria stray bullets kills a young girl in the streets. What happens to her family and daughters in florida know the mother daughter is buried in a cemetery it really messes with your head what happens to the community the public was screaming for a scapegoat the police need is a scapegoat so why not choose a 19 year old black kid with a criminal record who better to pin this on than him and what happens in court. Shock shock as far off the field we dont know a stroke of. The end of this trial unfortunately you. Will still not know for sure. Has changed american lives but pharmaceutical companies have a miraculous solution. Based drugs the people who are chronic pain patients believe that their prescription is working for them and the remedy be said to. Price at the. Close of dependency and addiction to opiates to long to use that really isnt scientifically justified and ill study actually suggest that. The long term effects may not just be the absence of benefit but actually that they may because we want to. Welcome back to crossfire where all things are considered im discussing joe biden and the democrats. Ok lets go back to Richard Richard we keep hearing that we heard this from hillary that she was going to recreate the Obama Coalition and it didnt work out and were hearing the same thing from democratic pundits and the media is it 1st of all possible to recreate that coalition and is it even desirable right now because we have this black swan and then to call the coronavirus which none of us ever could have 4 or seen i mean i can imagine its almost hard for me to. What life was like 6 weeks ago believe me its really and living in a very strange time ok so i mean what is that bullish because it looks like to both professional and managerial class the suburbanites in people of color is that enough to cross the line because again we think the way they progressives are such a huge wildcard here whats the coalition your habit you know when you think about the people who voted for bill clinton and i do you say you want to sizable president ial elections it was everybody you just mentioned and kind of working class whites working class whites have abandoned. The Democratic Party but if the primary indication they left me warmed to joe biden and i will tell you theres a reason you know in the past we talked about the election in terms of who would you like to have a beer with i think this year its like who do you want to have somebody who is decent back in the white house or not and i think look joe biden comes from scranton anywhere side obviously but i think it means that hes suffered last personally and he knows what its like to come up to a working class family and i think it again if the if the primary results are a vacation Bernie Sanders appeal to those people got their vote in 2016 and joe biden got them this time around in addition to the very people that you ticked off thats a pretty sizable chunk of the american electorate and you get the polls are indication today and i would note every swing state donald trump is losing to choke by joe biden its not lose any single state that hillary won in 2016 i picked the margins are big but every single one including states like arizona and North Carolina let alone michigan wisconsin pennsylvania donald trump is losing today to joe biden. Ok you have made helen you know i find it very interesting how the media treats all this speak. As after the the the machinations and the the phone calls late in the night after South Carolina also and everything coalesced i mean theres a doctoral dissertation in there somewhere on that ok those 48 hours ok but you know joe biden you know he has a reputation to be in the pocket of the Credit Card Companies also he has his hes never turned away hes never disliked one foreign war. And that and got involved in or continued and of course theres this what i would call you know believe women a serious sexual. Accusation against joe biden which the liberal media will not talk about will not talk about it and i remember very clearly the cabinet hearings i was very passionate about the rule of law and the presumption of innocence here but you have the liberal media that does it simply does not want to talk about it ok and they only like the New York Times were watching because they only started talking about it when bernie dropped out what a coincidence here so im very disturbed by that cover the liberal media in a free pass that they give joe when they hammer trump every single day maybe rightly maybe wrongly but the camera him ok the media is playing a very Important Role in this election as well go ahead joe. Yeah its a massive double standard and its just contributing to the further discrediting of the media i mean as everybody probably recalls the twentys the scene it was 095 percent certainty that Hillary Clinton was going to win and Everybody Loves Hillary Hillarys just great and then of course election day d came and that wasnt the case so i mean the media running interference for biden in doing this very obvious favoritism as far as hammering on trump for these assault allegations that come from at least in one case a very dubious place as this person but in the in bidens case the New York Times waited i think 33 weeks before even mentioning that this thing existed and he read the interview with the editor of the New York Times its utterly embarrassing him trying to cover for basically a complete collapse of journalistic integrity which not what the times had that in a while anyway d but still its the media is doing a point putting the nail in its own coffin by completely circling the wagons around biden and just giving away all pretense of nonpartisan isnt. Yeah you know you know richard i find it really interesting getting you know youve already kind of hinted towards it about breathing decency back into into politics here but thats at thats a thats a way to run a campaign ok but at the end of the day its voting against someone is that going to work this time around is it you the coalition actually is not going to be all the boxes we checked up there just hoping to things hatred towards donald trump and then hopefully hell screw up the pandemic and and the rigged economic recovery thats a pretty risky strategy dont you think because there are so many variables involved ok and joe playing the decency card i dont know i think that is very naive i dont think we look at politicians as being decent ok i think we look at the and if are they the person to get things done ok. Ive never met joe biden maybe hes a nice guy but he doesnt seem to be all there i mean ive watched a lot of bitterness with him you know im no doctor im not a position so im not going to judge but you know ive come across quite a few elderly people in my life and i recognize what i think could be you condition are you worried about these things. You know joe biden has a phrase he says dont compare me to the almighty compare me to the alternative and if hes that and he will be the democratic nominee hell be running against somebody who cannot pronounce the word our engines or anonymous who thinks that Franklin Frederick douglass has a great future or who thinks that an american invented the wheel thats to his opponents going to be so this notion that somehow by it is the one who showing some adult deficit please look the fact of matter is this isnt one of them to say the business about running against somebody. Again i think democrats have this sense of relief the reason that there was this coalescing around joe biden after South Carolina it was it was obvious there was going to be biden and bernie and a lot of democrats felt uneasy about having a self doubt socialist be the head of the Democratic Party the notion of keeping control the house of representatives would have been very much in doubt in that instance so and i think theres kind of a sense of comfort with joe biden they know what hes going to do on policies and a so that a character that you and i know thats the problem but still has a problem yes thats the problem but listen this is about this let me let me just say one thing peter i will believe you and helen and everybody else are taking seriously allegations that what allegation against joe biden by this woman if use is a weapon where i dont say 20 about the 20 that are actually going to court or litigating against donald trump because of his assaults on them when i hear that yes ill believe you meetings a lot and i dont really know if youre the super wakely i dont like the lesser of 2 dimensions and thats 2 great things it doesnt work out like that what a candidate does not raise a response to the mental the my point in bringing this ok is im not looking very good to see if you had nothing to do with being that it is kind of has been if youre going to come out. I gotta get my my point in bringing that is not to stick it to joe no im not is meant in the reference was made to the media not to joe biden ok and my point is youre right maybe 20 cases a publicly known really being reported and then you have this allegation that the powers that be the most powerful figures in media want to keep quiet and they do everything they can and then theyd do these. Hits on this individual woman i thought we were supposed to listen to every single woman in every single claim im attacking the media here and im not disparaging the character of either trump or biden that was the reason why i brought this up but i want to react to something you said richard said you know the thread up of the socialist Bernie Sanders what is the threat that losing your power or new policies are you is the Democratic Party worried about both a different way of imagining the workload and terrified of losing your power is this it and when it gets down to the day go ahead richard democrats want a house of representatives by winning swing districts districts it flipped from republican to democrat and democrats why were socalled new democrats probusiness democrats democrats who held themselves out as middle of the road they also want on health care thats the way democrats win 2020 and if anything underscores the value of having health care in this country incidentally not tethered to your top telling me at that point about people losing their jobs and therefore losing their health care yes lets have health care not tethered to your job and donald trump would have you have not health care at all you want to have kids on medicaid at all right and you would have no future so that we are on medicare if i was loved by you know medicare for all so i care im sure ive not heard of that im going to give you the health care that you need and its what kind of choices that. Well the choice between a candidate who is trying to get the federal government behind people who have preexisting conditions as opposed to somebody whos trying to strip that away is actress helen or not or is that something that you think is just kind of like up a 5. 8 kind of footnote you think if you think about what is going to be tens of billions like obama like obama has kept this promise as you know all those promises he kept it to close guantanamo to end the wars that turned to 1. 00 to 7. 00 to mean by them does not have a history of keeping promises by them have a history of volunteer and the prosecutor himself at large corporations. Are saying youre going to settle and probably thinking to myself you can keep your head up but many things like that are right and rabidly shakti said you cant want to test for corona virus you could get it back and makes that mark step thats what he said thats going to be the rallying cry this year if you want to test you can get it so says donald trump on march 7th and theres not a soul that believes that thats something he could make good on so thats going to be a promise peter to people remember in 2020 well ok look im actually really think that this is the the the Coronavirus Crisis and what happens afterwards i mean this devastation of the economy that is working people being absolutely utterly destroyed during this i mean were not bogus enough on that because were focused on the on the power to make this thing goes down the just its going to be left behind is going to be even to comprehend let alone deal with and thats going to be the referendum on donald trump rapidly running out of time helen what do you think the chances are of buyers remorse because thats name of this episode. Is joke to make it all the way to the to november or are we going to see a possibility that you know maybe joe kind of be moved along a little bit what do you think when you think the d. N. C. Has come in there. I think both the Convention Comes around that theyre going to have to have some sort of clue to jesus moment and then maybe you know maybe we shouldnt pick the guy that Sexual Assault case against him standing and maybe we should pick a guy whos clearly like sundowning half the time hes on camera and maybe we shouldnt does so what you call well maybe i mean theyre definitely lighting him up for it hes being put up as the the hero who goes against tampa does the right thing and coronavirus that im going to get a quick walk. Again another episode we were brought out a time when i think my guess the new old bridge and in new york i want to because we were watching it here at d. C. And expand remember ross knuckles. Something. Thats. Just. A little you put its not just one thoughts and you pull not a model so that we stop. This is all to u. K. Were live from Central London welcome to our viewers from around the world where currently awaiting the governments daily Coronavirus Press briefing given today by the foreign secretary dominic robb meanwhile top stories this hour. I just want to thank everyone from across the country for that steadfast commitment in following the rules including in this house it is making a difference we are the peak. Of the Health Secretary claims of countries which the p called the corona Virus Outbreak has the daily death toll which is over 750. 00 and says the labor leader hit south of the government for being too slow in testing and put curing protective equipment ill be talking to an expert in Communicable Diseases shortly. The head of the World Food Programme warns of demick famine of the political proportions across much of the developing world if vital aid isnt delivered singh. And immigration experts sit out the government announcements on these are extensions for frontline medical staff saying it now would apply to all those who promise to cough up well we can now cross live to the governments daily briefing. To welcome to todays downing street press conference pleased to be joined by a chief medical officer professor chris witty and also our chief of Defense Staff so nicholas carter. Before c. D. s talks through the fantastic work that our brilliant on forces have been doing during this crisis let me give you an update on the latest data from the cobra coronavirus data file and i can report that through the governments ongoing monitoring and Testing Program as of today 559935 people have now been tested for the virus 133400 95 have tested positive and of those who have contracted the virus 18001. 100 have very sadly died and we express our deepest condolences to the families and friends of these victims and my heart goes out to every single one of those who have lost a loved one throughout this crisis. As a government we continue to take the steps necessary to slow the spread of this virus the social distancing measures that people have overwhelmingly adhere to have meant that fewer people have had needed hospital treatment that has protected our n. H. S. Capacity as we continue through the peak of this virus and is undoubtedly helped to save lives. At every point in this crisis weve considered the scientific and the medical evidence that weve received very carefully and weve been deliberate in our actions so that we take the right steps at the right time. Now i know its been tough going tough going for businesses for families for vulnerable members of our communities up and down the country and its been a physical strain as we adapt to living and working at home while not seeing our family and our friends in the usual way we would like to its been an economic strain as businesses have had to furlough staff which is why the charts are launched the various business support measures to help the businesses and workers through these difficult times. But its also been an immense mental strain on everyone people stuck at home families worried about their finances and the elderly more isolated than we ever want them to be. We are making progress through the prek. Of this virus but were not out of the woods yet as sage advised last week and thats why the measures we introduced must remain in place for the time being. The greatest risk for us now if we stop all our social distancing rules to suit is that we would risk a 2nd spike in the virus with all the threats to life that that would bring and then the risk of a 2nd look down which would prolong the economic pain that were all going through and that was the point that Andrew Bailey the governor of the bank of england also made earlier on today. So with that in mind last thursday i set out the 5 principles that will guide our approach Going Forward to the next phase and which must be satisfied before we are willing and in a position to make any changes which would of course be based on the advice that we received from sage that way we will ensure that our path out of this crisis is sure footed protecting both the Publics Health but also our economy. If we stick to our plan if we take the right steps at the right time we can get through this crisis and i know we will. Theres no hiding the scale of this tragedy. But even in our darkest moments the crisis has also shown a light on the best amongst us and the nation has come together to applaud all who wrote it and it just started our care is every week and we pay tribute to their dedication their professionalism and the care with which they look after those whove fallen sick. And with general carter here today i think its only fitting to pay tribute to the amazing work of our fantastic forces and their hole in id that by defense secretary ben wallace they have been there every step of the way helping us to build the new and it just nightengale nightingale hospitals to reinforce our Critical Care capacity supporting our local resilience forms in delivering personal protective equipment where its needed most. And helping also to deliver the mobile labs which are critical to ramping up our Testing Capacity right across the country. And as a result of those efforts and that teamwork hospitals have been able to treat more patients as a result they saved more lives and weve ensured that the peak of this virus has not overwhelmed the n. H. S. And today our armed forces are again part of that team as we announce 2 new deployments to the n. H. S. Nightingale facilities in howard gate and bristol. And across the u. K. This extra Hospital Capacity which itself comes on top of the 33000. 00 additional beds weve managed to free up across the n. H. S. Thats the equivalent of building an extra 50 district general hospitals. And as i said that has safeguarded the capacity in our hospitals both to care for coronavirus patients but also to make sure other people get the urgent care or the emergency treatment they need people used to joke in this country that you could never build a hospital that quickly well we didnt just do one we built 7 and we thank our armed forces for helping to make that happen. And you know the many countries around the world including modern democracies the sight of the military on the streets in a National Emergency could be a cause for concern or even trepidation. But for the british people the sight of our armed forces working side by side with our brilliant and it just stuff offers a calm reassurance that the task at hand and that we will come through this crisis. Now i make no bones about it there have been challenges there still are challenges were not there yet. We continue to ramp up the Testing Capacity which will play a really Important Role in the next phase of the crisis. I misstate global shortage in personal protective equipment weve distributed over a 1000000000 items to the front line where its needed most weve just brought in the dayton who helped organize the london olympics to boost our domestic supply even further and im on the phone every day pursuing the next batch of deliveries from abroad with the support of our timeless Diplomatic Service and the 1st of several need to liveries landed from turkey in the early hours this morning. We will only come through this Global Pandemic if we come together as a nation and if we bring other countries around the world together so that we can rise to this international challenge. Dominic giving the u. K. Governments daily coronavirus a press briefing and he said that easing the lockdown too soon could lead to a 2nd spike in the virus and pay tribute to the work of the armed forces in battling the pandemic auntie caseys attorney is with me now also youve been listening to what was said that the government does actually think were past the peak yes weve been seeing of course hearing from dominic robb but also matt hancock earlier today in parliament and mr hancock the Health Secretary was speaking and in his view saying that the country has reached the peak of this corona virus demick and that the number of deaths is tailing off but he also stated that before the country can lift any of the measures which have been put in place to deal with covered 19 there are a number of conditions which must 1st be met. I just want to thank everyone from across the country for their steadfast commitment in following the rules including in this house it is making a difference we are at the peak but before we relax any social distancing rules or make changes to them we have set out the 5 tasks that have to be mapped 1st that the n. H. S. Can continue to cope 2nd that the operational challenges have been mapped 3rd that the daily death rate falls sustainably and consistently forth but the rate of infection is decreasing and most importantly 5th there is no risk of a 2nd peak now the daily death figures have come in for the latest 24 hour period in a state that 759 people have lost their lives after testing positive for cope with 19 of course those are people who have lost their lives in hospitals and that takes the death toll 2800000 that we know of course from the other nest figures released yesterday and their own analysis is that the actual death toll across the country including people in care homes and elsewhere could be significantly higher now mr hancock has been stating as well today that the government have engaged with over a 1000 companies to try to source p p e equipment for frontline n. H. S. Stuff but today was the 1st Prime Ministers questions for the new labor leader kis starmer and he took the government to task for what he said was their slow response in dealing with covert 19. We were slowing to look slow on testing slower protective equipment and now slow to take up these offers from. The Prime Minister said this is a National Effort and hes right about that i dont accept his premise that we can slow were going to buy the scientific advice the chief scientific advisor the chief medical officer at every step along this way if he thinks he knows better than they do with the benefit of hindsight then thats his decision but that is not the way we proceeded and its not the way we will in the future. And he said what about the e. U. Xp p p e scheme this is a route that isnt going away now absolutely and its a route which has taken on a life of its own after yesterdays society and macdonald hes the permanent undersecretary for the foreign and Commonwealth Office stated in front of the committee yesterday that the government had made a political decision not to join the e. U. s procurement scheme to get peavy equipment in to the country now today hes written a letter to the Health Committee saying that actually he we was wrong to say what he said yesterday it was inadvertent and that ministers didnt make a political decision not to participate in it but that they werent briefed by the u. K. Mission in brussels about this joint procurement scheme by the e. U. And also putting it down to an initial communication problem now initially ministers had stated that they hadnt received the emails to inform them of this for german scheme and their invitation to join it but weve been hearing from the e. U. Commission today theyve hit back at that claim saying that its not the case that the e. U. Made it perfectly clear to the United Kingdom about this scheme and that made it perfectly obvious how they could join that now there are some who claim that mr mcdonald has been pressured to take back what he said yesterday about this being a political decision but number 10 have released a statement saying that they deny any pressure being put on the f c o for mr mcdonald to change his mind. Thank you very much indeed for all of that cern to discuss this further not joined by Senior Consultant in Communicable Disease control dr broward county. Thank you very much for being with us what do you make of this is the Health Secretary right have we reached the peak now. I dont think so and i hope to be honest and express my concerns because we are not counting fully the number of cases in the Community Remember these are our test confirmed cases in a hospital setting what about the number of cases in the nursing and Residential Homes we have a Staggering Amount of deaths in our nursing and Residential Homes and for that alone we need to do in choir and put right immediately what is going on in the Nursing Homes out in the community its a disaster and really we need to put that right as well as countless cases in the community before we can comfortably say that we are going and coming down with regards to the regrettable number of large number of deaths in the united going to those daily death figures coming from the hospitals and we stress the hospitals. Can we see any encouraging in those at all are they indicative of the fact that the deaths themselves wont go up that there is perhaps a a chance that we are flat lining now with this no i repeat what i said i know but youre talking about whats happening in obviously care homes but what were seeing though in hospitals is there any indication we can take from that. No because we need to allow these numbers over a longer period of time for us to feel comfortably that even in the hospital setting we are now comfortable that the rates are not going up remember there are many parts of the United Kingdom have not experienced that wave yet and i remain concerned what if and when this way arrives in for example the southeast of the country where i live in. Scotland and the midlands so the lockdown has to carry on for a very long time obviously there are calls for the government to come up with some exit strategy at this stage 4 to profiteer them. Far too premature weve got to use the shut down for 2 purposes one make sure that we have now got our resilience in order which was not in order to begin with and then 2nd be assured that when we lift the shutdown and we get an increase in number of cases we are also prepared to test monitor isolate contact rates and all those things i see no evidence whatsoever that a large army of people have been recruited to undertake these tests we hear the key words we are ramping up testing what does the ramping up testing mean there are being oppressed in means you have the tests as well as the testers to undertake the right tests in the right way we need both to be able to undertake testing just one final point talk of a vaccine now being trialed can we get any glimmer of hope from that. No i know im so sorry to be negative and pessimistic i would love to be positive Coronavirus Vaccine immunity are difficult concepts so we cause we dont make strong immunity against the corona virus and because weve never made a human Coronavirus Vaccine its a. I will be so day love i take it if we are successful in making a good vaccine against corona virus at the moment its too early to say we are on the way toward success really interesting to talk to you on this today thank you very much dr up and coming up thank you for your time thank you still to come out of this. Immigration expects when the governments announcement on visa or extensions or from medical staff say it would to project although it was a promise to come up ill be talking to a lawyer shortly. Im max kaiser one more of my guide to financial survival this is on a device used by professional scallywags to earn money. Thats right these has flaws are simply not accountable and were just adding muumuu to them. Totally destabilize the Global Economy you need to protect yourself and get in for hazard. Seemed wrong. But all wrong just dont call. Me. Yet to shape out these days to come to advocate and engagement equals betrayal. When so many find themselves worlds apart when you choose to look for common ground. Dozens of countries could experience widespread famine as a result of the pandemic of rich and nations dont attack soon thats according to the uns World Food Programme it was that these 30 countries in the developing world a risk of famine if action isnt taken of those 10 already have at least 1000000 experiencing acute Food Shortages but when i say she says more than one of the 1000000000 pounds of pledged aid needs to be released so reaches where it is needed most urgently but hundreds of millions more is needed for logistics including airlift to get food and medical supplies to remote areas at the World Food Programme David Beasley said that if action isnt taken the results will be catastrophic. We are not talking about people going to bed hungry were talking about extreme conditions emergency status people literally marching to the brink of starvation we dont get food to people people will die this is truly more than just a pandemic is creating a hunger pandemic this is a humanitarian in food catastrophe were looking at a widespread damage of biblical proportions his comments come as a w f p report estimates that the number of those suffering from hunger this year could double to more than a quarter of a 1000000000 people on the pandemic makes this worse hotspot countries have already been impacted by years of war Climate Change and economic stagnation in yemen the doubling of p. V. Feeds around 12000000. 00 people each month when over 60 percent of south sudans population experience Food Shortages last year that i spoke to charity right c. E. O. An advisor working with the uns agency for refugees such out mahmood he told me government shutdowns across the world are hitting the poorest hardest. One of the main reasons that were that were going to be going into a food crisis and i think were going to be going to a food crisis regardless its just the scale of the food crisis that weve been able to manage one of the key reasons were going to be going into that is because some of those ports are closed and some of the i guess the countries exporting to the smaller countries some of that that has stopped now so ill give you an example of it like sudan where you mentioned in your report in sudan 80 percent of the people in iowa and new coach are slowing down of course for bringing key see being mean to lives or is going to have a detrimental effect on on their crops their events here and what we see 80 percent of the of the country will be affected like that and im sure youre aware that india theres a moment im. You know many of their. Their population relies on going to culture also as a 14 day quality not any ships coming into into the country which no doubt will have an effect on the polish people and the farmers i usually look after themselves and their family are the other countries that what are you as well that perhaps of are going on noticed by the general public in such. You know i think a lot of the conversational especially with the numbers that you you for addicted and the the who do you are has predicted you know a quarter of a 1000000000 people you know 320000000 students children that would normally go to school to get a movie theyre only hot meal of the day or in some. Of the schools are suspended around the world and you know India Pakistan bangladesh will learn to sit down all these how large scale Free School Feeding programs all of which are affected now so i guess like any sort of disaster where theres a flood its an earthquake or whether its a pandemic like were seeing at this moment time children of the worst affected. Immigration experts of war that a home Office Announcement to extend visas for n. H. S. Workers doesnt cover all those a promise to and has no Legal Backing partridge has more. The home office has been accused of causing foreign doctors and nurses in the n. H. S. Unnecessary stress as they fight coronavirus after declaring they would have their visas extended free of charge for a year only took her a cup the group that would benefit well this follows an initial statement made by home secretary pretty purcell on march 31st doctors nurses and paramedics from all over the world are playing a leading role in the n. H. S. As efforts to tackle coronavirus and save lives we owe them a great deal of gratitude for all that they do i dont want them distracted by the visa process that is why i have automatically extended their visas free of charge for a further year but this statement has led to confusion among n. H. S. Staff and immigration lawyers not all the doctors nurses and paramedics all here in the u. K. On the same type of visa and clarification on this only appeared on line 2 weeks later when it appears the automatic renewals only apply to workers on a tear to visa which is a general work permit there for. Or some medics here in the u. K. On different phases but apparently covered by the home secretarys policy could now potentially miss out while other n. H. S. Workers and care workers who could also be deemed essential for keeping the health and care systems running such as porters and cane is not included which has led to further stress and calls for their inclusion one of the problems which is imagine is that home Office Policy on extending leads remained such persons which was announced and this year paid 3 played everybody he was working in the n. H. S. But then has subsequently looks as if it has been limited to those he may be able to guarantee to or to be says im not a weapon that raises in other words no Family Reunion bases or other things and it may also be restricted to certain types of work in the n. H. S. And for example doctors and nurses and not days for example at hospital pool chairs and other people that are essential to philips and the National Health service so the governments found itself in an awkward situation in terms of effectively dividing n. H. S. Workers into essential and nonessential and also having made what amounts to a blanket promise to doctors nurses and paramedics which the us simply doesnt support individual let us to stop them this could have covered the legal bases and stopped any confusion and this is a view supported by immigration specialists some finance ments weve seen off for automatic grants of leave on the some doubts in the Legal Community over whether that actually works as a matter of law because the the legislation seems to require a personalised written notice to be given to people to extend their leave or for that to be a stature instruments or lawyers and now urging the government to swiftly care if i the situation allows an n. H. S. Staff to concentrate on Public Health issues and not private legal ones. For more on this im now joined by immigration paris to Robert Pollack and robert good to see you have now are you getting these workers really have a case most front line stuff for all these 2 to visas. Probably most not necessarily all and when i say most could be as low as 60 percent i dont know i suspect the government doesnt know there are many possible means by which a person might have permission to live in this country on a temporary basis that are not yet here to at these as many of those may well be working for the n. H. S. And unless theyre covered which theyre not by the policy when it really does come into force they may very well fund selves in some very difficult situations indeed and of course it was never a promise to actually extend visas for of other stuff was there now. 6 doctors nurses paramedics and all of those i mean those on the ticket to say if your reports are clean or if you drive an ambulance if you manage if you are a technician tasked with maintaining ambulance if your Health Care System knows no presence to assist with that this is an extraordinary time moving terms of legality its got to be a simple fix as. Yet its what would be that in mind view the most straightforward way of doing it simply passing an amendment to the immigration rules. To automatically extend block at certain categories of work certain individuals which you could extend so you could extend the doctors nurses that would be difficult you could make a retrospective that also wouldnt be difficult and its a simple enough vote in parliament but that hasnt happened as of yet but it will happen do you think well one would not think so. The policy as described would be simply a better faced lie if it didnt happen at all. One suspects it wouldnt come to that. But. My greater concern is is this. That the 3 felt really firstly you would have a situation with some of these beings or expires tomorrow. Even if the problem is fixed in 2 weeks a fortnights time that would still have lost their immigration status no thanks to the governments announcement and that could have. Consequence is decades from now and they want to apply for british citizenship some point in the future that thats not the 2nd problem is its only going to cover a certain number of doctors nurses and paramedics and only those employed by the n. H. S. Directly and here to scheme which is to say probably the majority but it it isnt it isnt everyone any stretch of the imagination and it its not going to cover some really fine tool jobs. That is that simply isnt the problems for them and so easy to fix all of that if you will that rabbit really good to hear from you live here in aussie kay i thank you for your time i get parkin that and thats it for the moment ill be that without more for you in half an hour from now. So. So. This. And. So. That. This is a story about what happens i asked her straight bullets kills a young girl in the streets. What happens to her family my daughters in florida the mother daughter is buried in a cemetery it really messes with your head what happens to the community the public was screaming for a scapegoat the Police Needed a scapegoat so why not choose a 19 year old black kid with a criminal record who better to pen this than him and what happens in court. Shot after shot is far off the side we feel. We dont know shell share this truthful. End of this trial unfortunately you. Will still love no children. And. Style demanding a system Climate Change on the spot thats me and show up at your. Home with nothing to. When you put yourself in the shoes of the patient
