Show which. So youll. Welcome everybody to watch your hearts i. And i when the. Well well well theres a lot of bad guys theres a lot of ugly but theres some good going on in the last few weeks mission a little if we can dig deep enough to find it obviously as you know the coronavirus has everybody up in arms and were seeing a lot of back and forth between Congress Members on both sides of the aisle the poor get left out obviously and so do those apparently we need to think. This is just 6 a push and pull right now its an Election Year and were just were kind of caught in the mix really is and the maps when you see these stories come like blazing through and you know those of us who you know lived through you know were in our twentys at least to know you know gone through the 911 experience where all the sudden you had the patriot act and the National Defense authorization act you. Wait whats going on because usually during these crisis thats when people try to push through the most like constitutionally damaging stuff that they want to do for a while because ironically those are the times where fewer people are watching because of what everyones off of 911. 00 particularly with the patriot act and how much that mitt towards taking American Security away and privacy now people are a lot more attentive so youre not going to be able to push things through as much under the current if you were able to do with 911 were watching one more Advocacy Group speak out against this right now youre seeing people that are basically thing you should be worried about and trying to make sure we have enough hospital beds enough math we shouldnt be trying to roll back more rights for people we shouldnt be trying to take away what it means to be an american citizen no we shouldnt be i mean just to give you an idea of some of the things that theyre trying to inform in the o. J. Also asked congress not only about the kind of like well you know let us kind of been definitely hold people without charging them but as long as the emergency takes place which could be forever the permanence of congress to pause the statue of limitations for criminal investigations and civil proceedings. For at least a few for at least one year they also looked at change the federal rules of criminal procedure when it comes to Video Conferencing hearings and to let those hearings happen without a defendants consent meaning that like ok lets say if you want to you know if theyre going to have any hearing in regards to a court case you defendant wouldnt have to have their consent in order for it to be done over Video Conferencing so on one hand youre like well you know conferencing hearings are smart idea in a time of virus but shouldnt the defendant whos there to defend himself be able to say i want to be there live or over video conversely stuff some say its passe that i think the timing is problematic but its also the fact that were supposed to be in this new era of criminal Justice Reform and were watching more and more of those reforms not looking very much like reforms at all when were talking about pushing through things like this that automatically turn turn every all of our progress on its head when it comes to many people who are already in. And actually being able to not only have their day in court but have a day in court that is actually foundational to their Constitutional Rights and the least of it but also be protected from the virus too because were also seeing that 2 words like well prisoners. Exactly and my other question is what are you if you were to hold these people would you actually hold them our prisons in our jails are already overcrowded when we saw the part you know we saw what happened down in mississippi with partment prison them like whats happening down there thats already a mess i mean theres a 1000000 Different Things at work here and one of things that got under my skin the most and that really upset me was the fact that like you had senators congressman our president all knowing in advance all knowing in january all getting briefed over and over and over again and not really sounding an alarm and to what mid late february because he the president believed he could contain it and other members of congress were so busy doing well one again Election Year trying to get somebody else elected and they were on the democratic side but also just not paying this attention the but didnt start with didnt stop it president ial there was so many other levers that also ignored oh they were also they were also making a lot of money at the stock market to burn them 1700000 may say Kelly Loffler republican out of georgia 1300000 you got Dianne Feinstein in the mess selling stocks left and right they all knew and they all got busy on the stock market at the end of the day but again what i put you know the needs of the people above the needs of their pocketbooks. And you can see the group of them there thats just some of them whove been accused of trading stocks. In what spurred whats to come with this virus. The Novel Coronavirus is Touching Every aspect of our lives stay at home orders have been issued in several places in addition to curfews pop up testing clinics social distancing mandates and the list goes on and on for American Workers its layoffs industry collapse and wondering if they will be able to weather a storm. Thats beginning to raise the same types of fears we saw in the 2008 housing and economic crash trump desperately tried to take advantage of the economic gains obamas recovery act created and now its 40 fives turn to work economic magic of the zone weve seen the child administration well ideas about a 1200. 00 direct cash payment to americans but that just doesnt go far enough workers across the country have already lost their jobs and many more face unemployment is coping 19 ravages the u. S. Forcing closures of restaurants bars schools and other areas of public life deemed nonessential Employment Projections look bleak and the lasting effects could cripple states for example Goldman Sachs forecasts that the economy will contract by 2. 5 percent over the 1st half of this year translation a lot of 3000000 jobs by june bush bank and j. P. Morgan actually see things a bit worse suggesting 7500000 jobs could be lost the food hospitality and Retail Industries are poised to take the hardest hit affecting states like nevada florida and hawaii at high rates but according to a quirk by the Economic Policy institute all things are going to feel the pain california is positioned to lose over 600000 jobs while texas could lose 400000 my home state of illinois up to 200000 jobs this summer. The job loss knows no region and respects neither war or urban areas its an equal opportunity with the white house spoiling every step of the way as they attempt to get a coronavirus recovery package together with House Democrats and Senate Republicans in a power battle americans are left hanging in the balance governors mayors and other local leaders will be tasked with not only fighting for their think the economy but developing policy plans to restructure after the colossal downfall and its an Election Year and a lot of that day but nothing matters more to voters in their pocketbooks can stay policy makers reduce job losses and mitigate harm and what measures can they take to lessen the blow. That is that is one of the most important questions that we can ask ourselves worried about you know if it hurts like whatever everywhere i look you you see the Economic Impact happening right you cant escape it theres absolutely from the stay at home orders to the closures of certain businesses if you tell the drivers of the American Economy in many cases the Small Businesses that they can no longer operate and they are out for weeks at a time they dont have cash reserves on hand there is no bail out waiting for them many of them are not going to be able to open their doors again and were already looking at industries that were suffering before the corona Virus Outbreak if youre talking about the Retail Industry if youre talking about you know the traditional Hospitality Industry all of those things were having their own they had their own bits of construction before coronavirus it and now this impact is something that many of them cannot weather its brutal in that sense for them and thats kind of the big question that snow over you kind of are proposing which is is you know is congress is anybody in our government really prepared to handle this economic crisis what it what it was were talking about earlier today its going to rival 08 if not if not go past what happened what we saw in 2008 absolutely and we know that this administration isnt necessarily equipped to handle it president since his inauguration has been running on the economy being great these numbers being the main. Thing job loss not really being a thing of being out of that pressure section of 08 and him you know basically doing a nonstop campaign on how great the economy is doing now all of that is turned on its head in a year where he is fighting for his own life in terms of reelection this is something that a lot of people projected could be the turning point for regardless of what his approval numbers were if the economy was to take a major things were going to look different so i think theres a lot of fear there as well and the economy is taking a major l. And the sad thing is you see washington go lock step right away into what they know right ok pay off the big donors ok bail out this group bail out boeing bail out all these companies boeing was doing bad before their sever happened remember they have there was a 737. There was a bunch of companies now who are jumping in like disaster capitalism like we might be affected by this what still some money from the American People would steal some money from the tax dollar taxpayers and get out get our big bailouts i think was a mark cuban actually said it best he said anyone who takes money from the government during this time of crisis should not be allowed to do any kind of start buybacks or other nests of any executives whatsoever because we cannot allow that to happen as we saw in the aftermath of 2008 and it should have been an automatic given it should have taken mark cuban to say it but i think that definitely was something that put a lot of elected leaders on alert as well so now theyre including that in their packages i think that there was Something Else interesting that came out this week earlier today actually congresswoman jodi she had some very interesting comments i think that we have that to me lets see this tweet oh my goodness. So she is going to call them and go and businesses closing unemployment soaring hysteria and fear which is where her c. E. O. s or 2 are boycotts and if that which is worse the illness or the i think that is the crux of the tweet and the issue here is that there are a lot of people particularly on the conservative side and the president as well right now who are looking at the fact that businesses are going to be threatening clothes and looking at a lot of the big business looking at you know. The capitalist market they were set upon and looking at those jobless numbers we talked about they are willing to stop the 2 to stop the whole borders they are willing to stop the social distancing because they dont feel they can get the economy back on track should we do that though you also risk people literally dying in the streets and i its an easy choice for me if it comes down to the economy or people dying in the streets im sorry i want to save the people dying in the streets because guess what you dont have an economy of people are dead back with capitalism going to something that they really understand you have this is this is not a this is not a 0 sum game you have to say people 1st you know we can develop all of these ideas about you know how to get our economy going again and hopefully our Governors State legislators and others who are involved at a local level do have an understanding that they have to start making these policies now because they cant depend on the white house to do it this is an Election Year clearly they cant depend on a lot of people to do it they are the ones who they are their populations are going to be looking forward to to make some type of sense of all of this you sort of dont put dont put put put people over profits thats really awesome awesome work as were going to break remember that you can also start watching the hawks on demand your brand new portable t. Micrographs friends arent slights against you know whites or men for example theres their slights against women or nonwhites so its always you know the idea is that statements that directed toward a Privileged Group are interpreted differently than a statement directed toward an oppressed group and so thats kind of the whole framework and its a its a political framework thats used the result is of course focusing at least on certain kinds of minor slights and say well rather than a northern door then we need to call attention to them but its not all slight so its very political and its contents and. It is now a time in america for this sort of class to the workers who are making minimum wage they cant survive they have to have 2 or 3 minimum wage jobs theyre rising up theyre going on strike. So one of the fallouts of the play will be much higher wages long overdue. In this community there are people who believe that its ok. Its really hard there are no jobs and you see that ive got kids and ask and as a parent. I can come up with an argument theres a lot of conflict in the game between the teams most of the conflicts i would say are over most romani and most of them is me. Close one on each of those he knows each other is Good Business the state of california alone makes 6000000000 dollars that you have to prison complex just to get some point in your life where. You dont care anymore nobody cares about you so you dont care might anything. In modern discussions and speeches and United StatesForeign Policy youll often hear the words humanitarian intervention thrown around quite a bit its the phrase of choice by many a Television News pundit and both democratic and republican politicians beltway think tankers and former pentagon types alike especially when discussing the need for u. S. Military involvement in faraway places you often cant find on maps youve heard the term used extensively by the administrations of george w. Bush barack obama and donald trump when discussing u. S. Involvement in sovereign countries like iraq syria liberate libya and iraq but what exactly is humanitarian intervention the encyclopedia brittanica yes that one defines it as actions undertaken by an Organization Organizations usually a state or a coalition of states that are intended to alleviate extensive human suffering within the borders of a sovereign state. But is that the truth labor and human rights lawyer dan koval it believes there was a lot more that meets the eye when it comes to the rallying cry of humanitarian intervention and he joins us now to discuss his new book on the subject titled no more war how the west violates International Law using humanitarian intervention to advance economic and strategic interest thank you for joining us today deb. Hey thanks so much for adamy you then as the title of your book suggests you know i want to ask you 1st what recent or what good examples of this humanitarian intervention you know best exemplifies the misuse of that phrase by the United States what are some examples that weve seen recently. Well i think the line that really stands out is libya. Its one will recall in 2011. U. S. Just stated that nato bombing of libya between march of 2011 and october 2011. This was under the Obama Administration and the 3 people who really pushed this operation were d. Selfish to anoint to him an attorney an interventionist and that was Hillary Clinton susan rice and Samantha PowerSamantha Power famously writing a book saying that the u. S. Had to be more active in stopping genocide around the world well but what happened 1st of all that turned out that the war was based on lies and all these wars are we werent there to protect human rights and in fact emails that were leaked by weekend weeks later showed internal discussions where they were in it there was no human rights crisis certainly by the time we were bombing libya. Meanwhile in us lied about a number of reasons for invading one of the law is the worst one. Was that get off it was used in black commercial and they are used from an african states to carols dont think well this turned out not to be true 1st of all i dont know why they had to be black but that with and for. But to it turned out theyre being black mercenaries who are african guest workers that could be invited to work. In libya these were not mercenaries at all in fact Amnesty International which initially had all disli were delayed or stayed there was no evidence of black mercenary this lie was important to come to detect things one that helped pave the way for the intervention which destroyed or not of civilians to g. s like stir which killed thousands to be but also this law and help. Her on an anti african anti black sentiment military and so during and after the nato intervention used to auger genocide against africa and to ask for africa guest worker to hold a day will you change the entire black towns were to obvious laded by the forces of the us the warden and he and they had to just protect that these were a legit black person aires meanwhile as we know on the streets to libya for the 1st time in memory african guest workers and other african brought into libya are being sold on the streets before d 100. 00 of can just as sway this was the result of the humanitarian intervention carried out by the us under obama and encouraged by rb the remote famous humanitarian intervention is in the world. Thats pretty incredible so its a pretty incredible having stuff. When he manages areas it takes all the home turf. And then get well. Theyre no good how is the United States and others been able to circumvent the un tarter and other human rights laws against aggressive war by using the guise of human terry and ben to. Guess what they say so 1st of all any war since 1945 in the creation of the un charter. We have to remember that the un charter was created the un has created after world war 2 in the sponsored a war would do and the main purpose of the un charter was stopped aggressive war because this with the mystic greatest scorcher against humanity and the greatest crime the nazis committed was a quest for. And so to get around that prescription against aggressive war and to get around the duty to sink Security Council authorization. To fight a war to us came up with this idea of humanitarian intervention that the idea you know. If we claim were going to stop genocide or going to protect the rights of people against and its danceable dictator. The u. S. Does but that is it doesnt mean you operate they should from security now. To do that the classic case of the worst was to yugoslavia this was the 1st. Modern humanitarian intervention carried out by bill. And it was carried out without Security Council authorization. And clinton wanted the big east if he wanted to bomb. Serbia which he did urge 78 days. Was to show the world the dean us could do it and could do it without Security Company council authorization and thats what happened the u. S. Did it along with other nato allies and their position was that doesnt change they can do whatever it wants to in supporting the rights but again in the case he was slavia again and what we saw were 2 things that nato itself carried out war front mask war right over 78 days of bombing which mostly focused on civilian targets. But also being human rights of geniuses to. Stir be there that to us claim to want to stop action ill arrange it imparts box to the bombing. In fact were spurred on by the bomb so that invasion again itself created humanitarian problems because again it focused largely on civilians and stability to structure but also to curb the very human rights abuses it claimed to curb act it because. Its been pretty incredible i want to ask you really quick only got about a minute left but are there any examples of you know humanitarian intervention conducted by the u. S. That actually was justified and didnt have all turned their motives of what profiteering and all the other things you mentioned earlier is there any in the last 2030 years that you can think of the big none of the. 28 there are 3 any. 2 well established or well except that examples of humanitarian intervention in the past decades none of them were carried out out by the United States thats truly incredible but i asked about not exactly measure. Was vietnam which invaded cambodia and got rid of pol pot. Which very few people go. 1 into. When they plan into East Pakistan and now bangladesh. Action in britain and it up doing a lot to stop max slaughter. In bangladesh and. Nina. Of to take changer in uganda eating meat well im sure its all human rights experts agree with those who are sometimes if you have a charity intervention not only cared about out by the us down which carried out by the last little while i would have gotten that was that shouldnt stop the African Child get rid of our world and Mandela Nelson mandela greece now. Well we did i mean i definitely recommend your book and youre always a fascinating read thank you so much for coming on the book once again is no more war how the west violates International Law using humanitarian intervention to advance economic and Strategic Interests then called what always a pleasure having you on thank you so much.
