Readings and sell you. While we get lost in all of the pomp and circumstance of u. S. President ial elections and fears of a virus pandemic i want to solve remember that one of the most important aspects of these 2 major stories is the reporting that has brought them to our doorsteps and newsfeeds its journalism the 4th the state that gives us the ability to question candidates seeking Public Office and hold officials accountable for their actions in times of crisis and that for the state has been under attack for quite some time not only from its own internal greedy thirst for higher readerships an advertising dollars but also externally by governments individuals and corporations seeking to control the narrative and this external threat was on full display recently in southeast London England at the war its crown court where the extradition hearings of wiki leaks founder and publisher julian a songe have been under way accused of conspiring with former Us Army Intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning to obtain and disclose classified information and charges 17 counts of violating the 1917 u. S. Espionage act assad has not only facing down the possibility of 175 years in prison but also the full wrath of the u. S. Government in its history of torture and abuse of Political Prisoners if the United Kingdom courts grant this extradition professor of journalism Roy Greenslade sums up the threat of assads persecution writing in the guardian that quote these offensives may relate specifically to one mans activities but should they succeed they would set a terrible precedent the aim is to prevent whistleblowers from telling the truth and journalists from giving them a platform. So at this 1st round of extradition hearings coming to a close and more on the way i think its time to get the who the what the where and the why why we still care as we start watching the whole us if you want to build whats going on on a cd you string you want to rustle a letter so youd like to see the prizes you always stay on see a rule these drone strikes as great as they did slaves systemic deception as the late show which would be so when the billed as. The. World go round watching tyrrell didnt and i dont mean. To bring us on the ground insight into the assads extradition hearings we were joined earlier by journalist rekeyed deed in london who had been inside the courtroom following the case as it went on we started by asking him what he feels after witnessing the hearings firsthand what is the biggest story coming out of the court. I think the big well its perspective i didnt want to take personally but kind of having through the hearings this week or this past week it became very apparent to me that it seems to me this seems to be that the result is already set in stone regardless of the lawyers arguments those sort of very clear signs of corruption and. Kind of lack of following of the jew process you know i can give you some examples of this but i guess one very telling case im sure everyone sort of read it read about in the newspapers and the media we had this incident where julian stood up in the courtroom hall for you to kind of complain about the lack of confidential time he was getting with his lawyer is you know there was reports say it didnt you know strip searched multiple times and he held in 5 different Holding Cells and his legal papers take taken away from him so. I had an afternoon in the courtroom where you know the lawyers were made a petition for him to come and sit in the next you know next to the lawyers in in the benches to remove him out of this glass stock that hes been sitting in the back in the back of the courtroom you know where hes not able to hear the proceedings not you not able to take part. You know we had about 2 or 3 hours of legal discussion about this where the lawyers presented evidence in precedence for other cases where defendants were able to sit with their lawyers. And despite all these arguments despite the prosecution saying they had no problems with Julian Assange sitting with his lawyers. The judge the district judge nessa braced she century read off of a piece of paper that was already with her prior to that evenings arguments it was like. Her decision had already been made so it was a very clear sign to those in the courtroom that you know this is you know nor case where due process is being followed unfortunately while in the crux of this case where i found it depends dean is proving that a 1000 is being persecuted by the United States for political reasons and not criminal with us because according to the ignition treaty between the u. K. And the u. S. Extradition rules out political bent how about that that hasnt found is it depends in making that case. Well this again its a very similar situation where this is precisely the the argument that the defense relied on and discussed in court they said that this is clearly a political offense numerous examples of this. The judge didnt you know didnt seem to be moved by these arguments despite the extradition treaty as this political. Political safeguard in for you know Political Prisoners which this case clearly is you know we can discuss some of the things going on with. Former congressman rob. Her in the new director of National IntelligenceRick Grinnell donald trump all these people these figures are involved in this but. Nonetheless the lawyers didnt know the sort of the judge didnt seem to be able to move by those arguments whereas on the other hand the u. S. Prosecution is arguing that. You know the political system Political Prisoners safeguards that are in place in the treaty should not apply in this case even though almost every u. S. Extradition treaty in the world has this political safeguard its in the u. N. You know model treaty example of what you know what treaty should look like its in the in supposed conventions on treaties. And you know the judge seemed to be fairly happy with this with this on human whereas you know is will those completely nonsensical to have a extradition requests that is trying to ignore the actual extradition treaty that its based upon the judge gave the prosecution very little pushback on this but you know gave a lot of resistance to the defense lawyers for saying a very basic legal arguments that the extradition should follow the rules of the extradition treaty or should follow the rules of the European Court of human rights which you know makes similar similar arguments against political extraditions you know im not a warrior and im definitely not a solicitor in the u. K. But to me its a kind of obvious i mean to anyone looking at this case that this is a Political Base case thats not really about crime its about going after assad for his political inspired actions at the end of the day i mean its kind of ridiculous to me is that not i mean just from someone outside looking in that the way it was proceeding here and for those of us not familiar with u. K. Courts and how they operate you know is this kind of is the operations inside the courtroom true typical of what you normally see in these kind of cases. I mean i havent kind of attended too many extradition hearings other than this one but i think its very clear to say that what is going on is ridiculous you know i was speaking to lots of journalists in and around the courtroom and you know theyre all discussing how they were you know bringing up the case with their taxi drivers or you know as a making their way to court and you know sort of just your basic person of the street was able to say that whats going on with Julian Assange is ridiculous i dont think theres any controversy about that but i think its a clear sign of whats going on. In the u. K. And in the west in general that we seem to be you all of kind of ruling society this for say lack of a better word is seem to be very happy to kind of disregard due process and basic rule of law just to kind of secure this prosecution. Is setting a very very dangerous precedent i believe. To rick where do you where do you think these hearings go from here what is the consensus so far on whether or not assad will be extradited to the u. S. Wards its still very difficult to say its going to be a very long process which i think thats something a lot of people need to be aware of so were going to have 3 more weeks of evidence in may and the thats going to be the bulk of the evidence. But regardless of the outcome of what happens in may this will be appealed you know if if the prosecution wins its case the. Julians lawyers will be appealing and if the u. S. Government you know loses extradition requests they will be appealing i think its going to be a 2 or 3 year process. But you know i think personally i think the only solution to this is going to be a political solution we need pressure from the outside to kind of say this is clearly a political case this is clearly someone whos not ever commit. Any crimes they are john list and if for if we kind of pretend that all countries are based on these principles of democracy in open access to information the absolutely no reason for him to be in prison the way he is. Thousands of american men and women choose to serve in their countries military and the decision that has shattered lives are bringing. A complete. Mystery and be instructed you know told to shut up what theyd kill me and i see how it destroyed my life any screamed at me me me come in a gram ion even eat meat. I think if you take into account that women dont report because of the extreme retaliation its probably somewhere near about half a 1000000 women have now been sexually assaulted in the us military rape is a very very traumatizing happened but ive never seen trauma like ive seen from women who are veterans who have suffered military sexual trauma reporting rape is more likely to get the victim punished in the offender and almost 10 year career which i was very invested in and i gave a sex offender who was not even going to justice or put on the registry this is simply an issue of our in violence male sexual predators for the large part of whoever is there to prey upon whether thats a man or when. Shes out of the democratic race for the white house before departing the nurse amy club which are made headlines as protestors spoke out against her starring role in a high profile case even to the conviction of my own he was finished to life for murder he says he didnt commit and there is every reason to believe him after all there was no murder weapon found no bigger prints or d. N. A. Linking him to the crime scene and my own alibis were never even checked but some innocent black to jail is as american as apple pie. The us has an unmatched way of challenging progress at the expense of equity Voting Rights is ground 0 roadblocks to limit black voting were things like the poll tax a literacy tax and when all else failed fear tactics of domestic terrorism the murders of people like Cheney Schwerner and goodman activists who lost their lives for simply registering black voters and supporting their quest to exercise their Constitutional Rights the Voting Rights act of 1965 spurred by the threats and ramped up violence against black voters gave the Community Hope it helped secure Voting Rights for hundreds of thousands of people today those that act 2 is a shadow of its former self threats to voting if youre poor or person of color are just as blatant in 2020 though theyre taking shape in different ways. Theres redistricting and partisan gerrymandering and just plain not having a place to vote at all or than 1600. 00 polling places have closed since the roshan of the Voting Rights act began displacing and limiting access for the most underserved communities across the country with a keen focus on the American South a report released by the Leadership ConferenceEducation Fund titled democracy departed polling place closures and the right to vote breaks down the issues currently facing minority voters and whats underway to stop mess voter disenfranchisement here to tell us more is civil rights attorney and kima levy on. The team always a pleasure having you on the show thank you for coming on i want to start with you know look black youth getting a harsh treatment in the criminal Justice System specifically you know being tried as adults for facing life terms is devastating and tragically it seems pretty common i want to ask you how common is this practice where youre seeing these black black teens getting jailed like this. Unfortunately its very common if you think back to the practices what then the criminal Justice System beginning specifically in the 1980 s. With the war on drugs with the focus on mandatory minimums and this notion in the 1990 s. Of black youth particularly young black men being super predators we have seen a significant increase in the incarceration of these young black men as a result and it has devastated the africanamerican community. And they came up or else it was overturned by the Minnesota Supreme Court and he was convicted again in 2008 for the exact same crime even though everything we logically consider as evidence wasnt present in the case do you think race played a role. I absolutely believe that race played a role in the way in which my own barrel was railroaded by the criminal Justice System and hip and county of minnesota it is unconscionable. That a 16 year old would be brought into the system and they would use jailhouse informants really no evidence to convict this young man and sentence him to life in prison he has spent nearly 18 years behind bars for a crime he did not commit and he has maintained his innocence from the very beginning its really unfortunate that his family has had to cry for justice for so long and have their cries fall on deaf ears until recently when the senator amy clover shar decided to run for president of the United States given the fact that she was the initial prosecutor in the case when she oversaw the Hennepin County attorneys office. And them our role in the protests that really came about you know against her think played a critical play that these unroll. Had a decent place in getting her to kind of step down i think because i think when they saw that coming down the line its like ok im going to touch this with a term of poll i better just have the softer joe biden write her out a lot faster than think it was ready to go i want to ask you though this interesting thing about Voting Rights and that is challenges to Voting Rights continue to bubble up over and over again we saw long lines in texas on super tuesday were some voters of the wait 7 more than 7 hours. Lets be honest is there ever did you ever see an end to what really to me seems like intentional Voter Suppression because if you dont let these people vote then they cant get in and start changing things that keeps their young men and women out of jail because thats the case here. Well unfortunately Voter Suppression is as american as apple pie so aciphex lee when it comes to africanamerican and latin next people who are trying to use their voices as their votes and play their part in ensuring democracy as you mentioned earlier there was at least one voter in texas harvards rogers who waited in line for over 7 hours just to exercise his right to vote he did not vote until 1 30 in the morning and when he left the polls he went straight to work that is absolutely ridiculous in a country that prides itself on having a lot of wealth and access to resources and claiming to value democracy it is unacceptable that we are depriving black and brown people of the right to vote since the u. S. Supreme Court Decision in Shelby County or county versus holder we have seen 1600. 00 polls polling locations close around the nation and those particular polling locations are disproportionately located in black and brown communities people of color already feel as though we do not have an opportunity to voice our perspectives participate in democracy at the highest levels run for office in the way that we should and now merely going to the polls and exercising our right to vote is being seen as a threat by the powers that be and impacts their Decision Making with regard to where they locate polls whether they have equipment that is operational at the different polling sites whether they have enough workers and whether theyre pouring another. Resources into the various polling locations to protect our right to vote it seems to be a conspiracy if you will to silence the voices of black and brown people and i definitely agree with you there and hema and we know from gerrymandering and redistricting which is literally people drawing elected officials often drawing the lines and choosing their voters instead of voters choosing their elected leaders to what you just mentioned all of the polls like closures also relatively bringing back poll taxes in certain states the efforts to stop black and latino voters are just as prevalent today as we saw before the Voting Rights act passed do you think theres anything boaters of color can actually look forward to because a lot of this is extra depressing we just saw the extremely long lines on super tuesday will things ever change. I think that things will change when more americans become involved in fighting for equal rights and equal justice at the polls we should not just allow what happened at the Supreme Court in the case that i reference to be the end of the story we have an opportunity to reach out to the folks in congress and to demand that they ensure equal access to the polls for all american citizens who want to exercise their right to vote but unfortunately too many of us are complacent and were indifferent with regard to these voting irregularities that are happening across the nation i really hope that what happened in texas in california with those extremely long lines and all the people who are not able to vote is a wake up call for the people who run this country who we voted into office and who should be adamantly and fervently protecting our right to vote they need to put the resources into these systems and they need to hold people accountable who are running these polls to make sure that the equipment is working thats the bare minimum of what should happen most of the time when we go to the. We already feel as though were voting for the lesser of 2 evils right and so we have a lot of work to do and were going to strengthen our system of democracy which in turn will strengthen Civic Engagement i think you put them you know you have to mail them ahead with everything you just said i could not agree with you more i think you know not only do we have to put pressure on our elected officials but yeah we also need a Major Political change in the 1st place just so we dont feel like were always voting for people who dont represent us and dont represent our community i think thats thats a very great point you made there in the key thank you so much for coming on and educating our viewers and keep up the great work up there. Thank you. Its not just the failing peace deal that has afghanistan and the United States once again making headlines this week it appears that the once halted inquiry into the many war crimes that have taken place there during the war has been given a green light again yes theyre investigating r t americas Rachel Blevins has more.
