have been saying it's vital not to distort. the pot's. people. know liberation they really say that without the red army there would be no me my mother or other prisoners. also coming up on the blocks also trade. i run the clock across the world this is your artsy international from the team and myself you know neil alone welcome. dozens of world leaders and dignitaries have gathered in jerusalem to commemorate the holocaust then bring attention to a rising wave of anti-semitism it's time to mark the 75th anniversary of soviet forces liberating us which the infamous death camp in nazi occupied poland. my dear family i'm writing this letter before my death i don't know exactly when me and my relatives are going to die just because we're jews i'm in a concentration camp before all of us will be shot in a shelter thursday 4 am 16942 farewell to you all. but of the premise that due to that i figured out i was. a couple i got several drugs from birkenau in auschwitz one of the jobs was clearing the ashes from where they burned the jews through tunnels to a small river and i worked there with another guy who's already he was 32 now i was 16 i didn't know what these actions were one day when i saw it in daylight i asked them what's the job with doing so he told me what it was i promised myself that my ashes never be. over do you want that. it's something that gave. me a lot of forget it every morning praying i look at my hands and see well i have the number here and i see it every day and i think the time that i was with again. a world leaders out the holocaust memorial for giving speeches about the importance of remembering the horrors of what up. that's the international destro of world were nonconductor of love and mercy because they performed for an audience that heard among other things israel thanking the red army for its role in the victory over nazis and while in his address president putin the scribe the holocaust as one of the darkest moments the world has ever seen. it by your skill. before my visit to drusilla i looked through the official documents and reports of red army offices after the liberation of auschwitz concentration camp i must say dick colleagues it was impossible to read the details of how the merciless machine of people extermination worked these crimes conducted by the nazis were deliberate and well planned what they called the resolution of the jewish issue is one of the darkest emotion full pages in modern world history israel is hosting its largest if it international forum more than 45 world leaders are here in jerusalem attending the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the liberation of auschwitz now amongst those who addressed the crowd was the russian president vladimir putin he said it was the soviet army who brought to an end the crimes of the nazis but that it came at such a huge price some serious some $27000000.00 soviet citizens who had died at the same time he said that russia stands for truth and justice and invited those countries of the world who have held those bally's to stand alongside with ed he proposed to me shin of the payment and members of the un security council to be held this year and he offered russia as the host country to deal with these kind of issues and make sure that such horrendous atrocities do not happen again. first of all it was the soviet people who ended the barbaric plans of the nazis as it's been already mentioned here they predicted their own land and liberated europe from marxism we paid for this with the price that had never come in the worst nightmares of any nation 27000000 people killed we will never forget this. but despite a 2nd says there are those who do not see the soviet union as a liberator in a somewhat damning opinion a piece of the polish prime minister say that russia was not a liberator but had actually condoned and assisted nazi germany now the polish president declined his invitation to attend the ceremony because he was not afforded the opportunity to speak likewise the russian president and others the official organizer you have a shame say that he had been asked to speak at a separate event the russian ministry of foreign affairs has come up quite strongly against the canes made by the polish media is saying that they are essentially rewriting history and that it's a known fact that russia was the army in the country responsible for liberation both auschwitz and poland and the israeli foreign minister agrees i want to personally thank you for the fact that the red army freed outfits and helped in the victory over the nazis because my mother was one of those detained and was liberated by the red army relatives of those liberated from the camp know who freed them the israeli president has said that the history of the 2nd world war and the holocaust should be lifted historians one moring statistic to come forward is the fact that a large number of youngsters have heard seen the show or know very little about the 2nd world war auschwitz and the holocaust caught up with it in here in israel who are trying to change that from the ashes of the auschwitz concentration camp emerged to woods never again. through the generations as warning in a few days when it comes from members day will be commemorated around the world the tragedy of $6000000.00 jews who were tortured gassed and burnt in concentration camps will be remembered but for how much longer according to recent reports as many as 66 percent of millennial cannot identify auschwitz and almost hoffa cannot even name one concentration. some don't even know what the holocaust was these be multiple cases of people disrespecting concentration camps with the sophies something that some people named and shamed by the controversial you look aust project increasing needs falling on the younger generation to make sure the atrocities of the holocaust are not forgotten like it was going over its whose grandfather was a survivor outreach by recent studies showing the ignorance of 1000000 meals he set up a project called humans of the holocaust what i'm trying to do this project is actually you know to drill for and to better educate people about what happened in the holocaust and i'm trying to do it in a different angle trying to because we're speaking about me larry was you know today you have twitter and you have instagram and you have tick tock and you have so much information flow and you have to get the attention of the young generation humans of the holocaust is a project that tells the stories of survivors and the children who speak about the years in camps and how they lived with this experience off towards some young people have come up with unusual ways of remembering the relatives my grandfather was. a hero for me he was a very very big part in my life from when i was a baby i asked him before i did that he asked why why you are there like you want to do number of holocaust in your head and i thought him if i want to keep the story alive to tell my kids to tell my grandkids someday could move its wants to expand his project with more human stories so the world we remember and never forget i would you for example add there is a holocaust survivor named google like you know he told me that the only thing that actually kept him going while he was in the holocaust was a sense of humor and he suggested we will take a speech or holding a yellow boom in the shape of the yellow badge the jews were forced to put on their sleeves. during the holocaust and in the beginning i wasn't sure that this is exactly that picture that i want to portray you know it is a submission that when we took the picture and when he actually you know the rooney actually embraced it and he was so happy he had the this huge smile these face and you know everything connected because his message is that is no matter what is happening actually in your life if you will to use your sense of humor you will find the resilience to actually you know to keep forward i'm sure when stories that people will be able to actually to release and my hope is that you know the people you know with will see that exhibition they will do their own research and it will try to figure out why the holocaust happened and what are the lessons that we are all supposed to learn from you know from the history. and running during which time will tell. us leader with the report on monday poland will commemorate the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the ice which death camp the following is a story of a man who survived the horrors that are bloodless love of music was actually born in the concentration camp and managed to survive along with his mother we spoke with him about the liberation of ice which. people tell us but there was no liberation they say so if there was no read only then there wouldn't be me or other prisoners oh my mother i have never questioned the merits of the soldiers i have always been grateful the prime minister and the president criticized the red army equally it was the same under the previous authorities know the admit there was a liberation of auschwitz but at the same time they say there was no liberation of war so we call that the 2nd ok patient. was liberated but that was so and other cities will not i don't know maybe the americans liberated them. to talk more about today joining us live on the program marc shulman and tell of eve marks editor of history central dot com usually magazine columnist to mark good to see you mark firstly what does this oliver street mean to people there. well look and then a verse 3 was a significant one the fact that all these world leaders came was very very significant it was a great biggest gathering of world leaders in israel in israel's history actually other than for funerals and this was not a funeral although in some ways it was look we're reaching the point where there are very few survivors left there are no perpetrators left we are reaching into a different generation and the holocaust is moving into history and we have to worry strongly how that history will be remembered we have to think about what will be like when there are no more witnesses that you can interview with real live people and all we can talk about is the films that we have in the books we have and the other artifacts that we have of this time and i think it's really important at this point and i think most israelis share this to understand how we frame this in the historical record because this is the 75th what happens in the 100th anniversary how far back in history will people think about it for the jewish people it was a calamitous event. and of course it is marked a major change in the trajectory of jewish history where jewish history which had been primarily a nation living in diaspora has now of course moved to being primarily a nation living in its own land and of course to many israelis that is part of the lesson the strongest lesson of the holocaust is that in order to avoid a future holocaust one has to be in one's own land where one can have one's own army and have power over one's life. mark we have seen a lot of politicizing of today's events we had the polish president refusing to attend because lemaire putin got a chance to speak and he did not your initial thoughts on don. well it was just it was almost silly and it said i mean clearly the fact that poland wasn't there was missed the fact that he wasn't there a little bit less so israel and the holocaust relationship with the polish president has been kind of tense over these last 2 years the whole issue of laws that passed that said that you cannot say that anyone poles were involved in the holocaust and you know making sure that is a distance between the holocaust in the polish people and all those and all those other things have created a rift shall we say but you know it was really on his part i think rather small minded and from not the calm i mean clearly yes it may have felt he should have spoken but it really was it was the it was the russians or the soviets at the time liberated the camps it was the americans who came from the other side it was the british who came it was the they're the ones who fought world war 2 poles died as victims there's no question you know both the jews who were killed were polar citizens after all but the poles with the victims of the holocaust as well as many others. but it was the liberating armies of the united states of the soviet union of england and a few of the other allies that came and forth and liberated and ended nazi rule and ended. holocaust we have also seen attempts to save up the soviet union was a facilitator of nazi germany despite losing by some estimates 27000000 people during the 2nd world war russia has already called it rewriting history quite direct in the take what do you what's your take on them. was a complicated story i mean after all you had a situation where everyone wanted everyone's afraid of nazi germany and everyone wanted to enter into some sort of a group treaty with them so they would not attack both the poles and the russians both. entered into such treaties especially after munich when the soviets saw that the british and the french were not willing to stand up to hitler and so they entered into a pack so that they would not attack so the nazis would not attack them so in that level you could say you know they were for seoul the apollos till date or anybody who entered into a treaty with the nazi germany was to some extent but so you was mostly concerned about building time having time to rebuild its armed forces which were not in the greatest of shape $138.00 in 1989 and probably if it were attacked then not sure what the results would have been those extra 2 years were vital for rebuilding the soviet forces so you know people do various things when when when you forced in terms of a war i don't like any of the looking for you know there was one person whose response of world war 2 and that's not a federal or there is one country that's responsible for world war 2 and that's not true germany is one of those few cases in history where the war didn't take quite accidentally it wasn't a mistake it was like world war one world the armies mobilized in back so that the thought of war was a misconception out of hitler started the war when he invaded poland he tried to invade england but his 1st evaded france and conquer france he couldn't. invade england for return to the tensions of the soviet union invaded the soviet union he is responsible for world war he and the german nazis were clear response of world war 2 it's one of the clearest cases of good versus evil so one case we see absolute evil and thankfully evil did not triumph it is a very proud moment for people in russia. directly related with their families and in general as well so when the rage dollars over the red army is rolled being talking about it in liberating ice which it is a very sore point not just here i think but but across people that are educated about it but they don't seem to be happening more and more why do you why do you think it is. we have a fit situation in the world frankly where facts don't seem to matter anymore it doesn't make a difference what the facts may be you know there is a us senator named patrick moynihan you used to say you're entitled to your opinion but not to your facts and so people are rewriting facts just to fit their particular narrative and we find that particularly among the nationalists of polish nationalism is rewriting a little bit of history to better look upon the polish people other nationals doing the same and people are ignoring the real facts i mean listen the soviet people bled more than anyone else during world war 2 the soviets gave up more in terms of men fighting and civilians who died than any other country during world war 2 and if it wasn't for the soviet union i have serious doubts whether had loaded been defeated and i don't think anyone can really question that in terms of historical fact everything else is. it's a sham frank quite frankly to say anything else but that yes the united states was also of course key and it wasn't for the united states is industrial might the soviet union might not have gone during the war but the united states provided the industry and invited soldiers to obviously many americans were killed but the united states survived the industry the planes the tanks etc in the soviet union bled and for and bled and defeated the nazi. on the battlefield in tremendous battles that you know as an american we don't even learn very much about frankly and i'm sure most israelis don't know much about but these were huge battles they were 4 by millions of men casualties ran in the hundreds of thousands in each of these battles but in the end the soviet union won those battles and because they won those battles not the germany was defeated just touching another aspect of today before we go the matter of a round was tackled by american vice president mike pence while he was speaking out the commemoration event do you believe it is a proper venue for such honor of dress. code also promised and then you know who has repeatedly in israel we have a day called you on the show of the holocaust remembrance day and every time he speaks he actually speaks about iran because his point of view is the one country that is threatening another holocaust is iran so from that perspective there's a certain it makes a certain amount of sense on the other hand i do not like the fact that today was politicized at all frankly and iran is a political issue to some extent i mean on the other hand it is an extension threat to israel but today should have been a day we took purely about 2 things the holocaust on the rise of anti-semitism in various parts of the world mark thank you very much for your time and your thoughts certainly a lot of food for thought and a conversation marc schulman editor of history that the big 4 that google amazon facebook and apple are trying their best to cozy up to. i don't think it's a good idea to talk about politics or policy with a glass of wine in your hand and excellent food offered by a person who has clear interests to represent and then there is a little less transparent lobby because there are members of industry associations well they have consultants working for them so you talk to people and you don't realize if they are representing the interests of google or facebook or silicon valley because the names are different these lobbyists seem to have some very deep pockets according to transparency international in 2019 google spent some 8000000 euros trying to get into brussels good graces while the lobbying budgets of the big 4 have. since 2014 so why is this new digital tax regime causing them such a headache well until recently most digital giants pay their tax bill in the country where they're registered but as they've grown questions are
