Very good evening and thanks for joining us here on r. T. International. Dozens of people convicted of terror of fences in the United Kingdom who were released early are said to have their cases reviewed thats according to the Prime Minister Boris Johnson comes after it was revealed fridays London Bridge attack had himself been released early. Any other legal are in the same he would show load out and there was no in this has nothing to do with parole it was nothing to do with probation how many legally the same as legally there are for everybody so this is really become a talking point over the weekend since that attack on friday on London Bridge towards the side where the city of london financial district is now of course the person involved car somebody who had already been found guilty of involvement in a plot to blow up the London Stock Exchange but then was released as part of a scheme and there were attempts to try to rehabilitate him and put him back into society if you will that it was actually one of those events which were organized for not just him as a convicted terrorist but other acts offenders to attend and it was that of reportedly that he decided to launch his attack an attack killing 2 people in injuring 3 others on London Bridge and as i said that has over the weekend sparked a number of political accusations back and forth about whos to blame for this terrorist being on the streets these people darron should never ever be let out of prison unless were absolutely convinced they do not have the jihadi virus people dont want history lessons after this terrorist atrocity what people want is to put victims 1st and keeping Community Safe 1st and if he had been sentenced under our rules he would still be in jail today no terrorist should be released without it being properly assessed whether or not they still pose a risk to the public scotland we have indeed automatic Early Release for prisoners sentenced to more than 4 years in prison so theres plenty of political fallout as the different parties point the finger at each other the conservatives try. Say that this Early Release scheme is ultimately the responsibility of the labor party while the labor say well firstly it was a conservative government under which this terrorist was released but also that the conservative budget cuts impacted policing meant that terrorists like this much harder to find now Boris Johnson over the weekend has been advocating for a policy of locking terrorists up and throwing away the key if you will even his own foreign secretary dominic robb confirms that the conservative party have a policy of a minimum 14 years sentence for dangerous terrorists and theres no guarantee that even would have made a difference in this case because this man was sentenced to 16 years and were released early so there will be those who are calling for that to be changed while the leader of the Labor Party Jeremy Corbyn is arguing that each case should be taken on its merits and that you cant apply a blanket scheme all round so many different opinions as we head towards a poll in just 10 days now that will decide everything from meet the u. K. s education and environment policy and also how to fight crime and terrorism. We put the issue of Early Release for debate. Since september the 11th weve released 500. 00 terrorists who have committed acts of terrorism in the u. K. That these 2 men a and clearly we need to toughen up our laws but whats at the end youve got to remember that these people are quite quite unusual of whilst we need to control them we also need to be very clear that we cannot infringe on civil liberties. Because they are so important because these post isis post liberal post in lighten if you like terror attacks happening on home soil theyve often come home grown terrorists radicals criminals whatever you like to call them but they have been institutional failures the state Security Apparatus can do better should do better and isnt doing better and we have to ask questions why i remember the police the Security Services the courts are attempting to prevent these violent terrorists from attacking this country the question here is what are we doing about those people who are involved in terrorist organizations but have not yet committed serious terrorist offenses i say membership of any terrorist organization should have a life imprisonment or if that would resolve the what do you mean member should know even know who carries a good. Luck bus a heart of terrorism friends on drawdown going on there you know be under its own country i dont have a terrorist organization ive got no problem on terrorism the hard line thing to saying like throw away the key or terrorism should terrorists go to prison forever thats absolutely fine you know or even open up a dialogue on is Capital Punishment appropriate some people in some cases ok however what we have to do is ply apply fairly across the board if we are allowing entrapment cases where people are sent to syria and they come back we reduce their citizenship we transduced their rights you talk about civil rights and human rights what about the Bethnal Green schoolgirls who at 14 or 15 were transported to syria if you join a Terror Organization we have to find out why. I mean to tackle these issues properly were talking about people going to syria or going to Training Camps in pakistan people who are engaging in acts of terror whether that be fund raising where that be terrorist training or whether it be actual acts of terrorism in terms of violence those sorts of people should know more p. Treated reasonable and then somebody who turns around and says i only murdered this woman because it was a crime of passion the law needs to change membership of terrorist organizations needs to hold a maximum penalty of life in prison and then judges can choose whether that maximum is appropriate on a case by case basis that to me seems sensible. Moscow and beijing have launched a 3000 kilometer pipeline to the power of siberia that will carry russian natural gas to china. Today were marking a significant truly historic moment you not only for the Global Energy market but for us china and russia. Our Relations Center in the new era and i hope russia and china will do more projects of the sky and projects that will serve the interests of both countries and benefit old people. In the pipeline took 5 years to build and is the biggest russian Gas Investment project yet hes around cost of reports from beijing. The 3000 kilometer long power off siberia gas pipeline and has been commissioned by russia and china on a monday the ambitious project has united the Northern Hemisphere 2nd largest gas producer along with the worlds 2nd largest gas Consumer Market economic unity and friendship between neighbors or russia and china. And for china it couldnt be more timely the country has been using increasing amounts of gas and its a trend that looks set to stick around for. The shes a major strategic project for Bilateral Energy cooperation it is of great significance to deepening incorporation between the 2 countries and integrating our interests now russia is also quite pleased with this project when this name we have started with the biggest restructuring projects in the world there will be nothing bigger in the sphere for years to come because this is not about breaking records this is an extremely important project for this russia and china but we all know that energy is as stake its all fake and there is no pleasing everyone especially when someones been cut out of the deal now the Worlds Largest producer and consumer of natural gas the United States is now perhaps regretting driving su outcasts countries together after waging an economic war with one and slapping sanctions on the other the us ongoing trade war with. Has driven beijings consumption of americas flagship liquefied natural gas right down to gas like no other apparently this one has a uniquely american flavor increasing export capacity from the freeport liquefied natural gas project is critical to spreading freedom gas throughout the world by giving americas allies a diverse and affordable source of Clean Energy China and russia as energy corp is a double whammy for the United States which is also seeing some of its other gas consumers surging their backs on it in a matter of months and all their Energy Pipeline north stream soon will start flooding europe with russian gas at a faster cheaper and greener rate that is american alternative washington must be scratching his head at how some european leaders could shun its uniquely flavored gas in favor off a closer ties with moscow despite its best efforts to convince them otherwise were taking germany were rejecting the french would take both of these countries and numerous other countries go out and make a pipeline deal with right where this thing is in dollars into the coffers of russia thats one of the concerns that President Trump has about nordstrom to why your would voluntarily tie itself even more to Russian Energy supplies and we make a tough case about ensuring that germany doesnt become dependent on Russian Energy we dont want europes Energy Supplies to be depended on platter mere putin. China has slapped sanctions on a number of u. S. Nonprofit organizations adults who put on a u. S. Navy visits to hong kong on hold the move comes in retaliation for some recent steps by washington which a viewed by beijing as hostile. Cindy may find response to americas unreasonable behavior the Chinese Government has decided to suspend only u. S. Navy and afterwards visits to hong kong. China will also impose sanctions on the National Endowment for Democracy National Democratic Institute for International Affairs International Republican Institute Human rights watch Freedom House and other n. G. O. S are actively involved in the hong kong riots as to when it will end it depends on americas behavior. This comes hot on the heels of trump signing into law last week the hong kong human rights and democracy act the new legislation would sanction any chinese and hong kong officials believed to be involved in Human Rights Violations in the special Administrative Region times decision was met with jubilation by protesters in hong kong they swarmed outside the u. S. Consulate waving american flags and thing in the u. S. National anthem. Dr pack known juan is a senior lecturer in politics and International Relations at the university of bath and kearney joins me on the line now very good evening to you tube and what were witnessing now Donald Trumps move chinas countermove is this is all part of the dance of of an ongoing trade negotiations or is it a sign that things arent going well. Well i think i agree with your disses. Tree in the tree is also a bold us china competition. I think all this has been triggered by the reason a little sledge the legislation all the hong kong human rights and democracy act. Or we tie asian again is the washington d. C. Has to do with the act which is being perceived by beijing is interfering and breaching all the chinese saw frontier over hong kong. A few years ago or the beijing or 40 or the same state of the world out beijing has all for jurisdiction over hong kong and because the act having certain impact and construct over how Hong Kong Government will conduct is only turn off here so does this being perceived by beijing as completely breaching the chinese sovereignty over on cop did you think when trump signed the hong kong human rights and democracy act into law or do you do you think he really thought china would just sit there and accept it. What i think what mr trauma storing hes trying to or increase more bargain in troops in his hand in trying to get a good deal with china are trying to close up the to close the trade negotiation with china as soon as possible unfortunately. North very optimistic about what is going on and obviously ward china is doing is trying to tighten and to tough on up more measures on to hong kong and unfortunates the hong kong looks like to increasingly become a battleground between u. S. And china can with and im afraid to hong kong where were likely to be sacrificed because of these a confrontation between and us china because hong kong has been very sensitive and has been receiving a lot of Foreign Direct Investment also from the u. S. Because try the chinese altie we were not just back down and we were true toughen up the measures. And eventually the whole call rule be. Backed by china into closer to ease. And then so you saw in this case i think the result would be just and timely and obviously of what with with what washington d. C. Was all region really intended to do. Ok wrap it up there many thanks to my guest dr pack knowing well hes a senior lecturer in politics and International Relations at the occasion university of bath thank you thank you. Ok plenty more coming up this hour to stay where theres a bit back after this short break. Join me every thursday on the alex salmond short and ill be speaking to us from the world of politics sport im showbusiness ill see you then. Welcome back the retail giant amazon is facing a backlash from the Auschwitz Memorial after it offered for sale a range of christmas ornaments that contained images of the former concentration camp the products have since been removed Christmas Tree decorations trinkets and bottle openers board images of the camp you know morial called the items rather disturbing and disrespectful and asked for them to be taken down but some think not to blind. I think or hope this isnt a deliberate listing rather a computer grabs images and puts them on generic ornaments if god forbid someone were to purchase them then they would make one whats wrong with people who would buy that let alone make it looking at their products i believe its Computer Generated and they havent realized what image is being used. Ok we did ask amazon for comment on the story we await their response in the meantime lets get some reaction now from mark shulman hes newsweek columnist and editor of history central dot com good to have you on. Just to look at the less obvious angle to this lots of people on social media saying you know this isnt really amazons fault they said the images were automatically generated by computers effective this saying this was a service that was abused whats your take on it. Well its partly yes and partly no the issue with amazon is it has thousands i think actually millions of merchants who they sell for on their platform and the problem amazon has is they do not do a very good job of policing those merchants and so therefore anything can appear on their platform and they do not do a very good job of finding those things and removing them quick enough its a similar problem they have with all sorts of counterfeit goods as well so you know its a general problem with all these big high tech giants with their biggest concern is Growth Growth growth and they dont spend the effort of policing their own platforms as necessary and this is a perfect example that it shouldnt require people speaking to amazon to take it down amazon has enough computer capacity and Everything Else to were able to have found this by themselves and not allowed it to appear on their platform at all but they didnt spend the effort to make sure it doesnt happen. Yeah mom is on as i understand theyve removed the products from site but there have been yet more complaints products like mouse pads showing the memorial cropping. Online now so is this what youre suggesting that actually its going to take quite some method for amazon to change the way it operates in order to stop this happening regularly. Why i think so i think theres no reason with Artificial Intelligence that amazon has in it say the u. S. Division that they can automatically skin when anything comes up on amazon for when someone enters anything for sale they can automatically scan for what it is and whether it meets certain guidelines and certainly anything that relates to the holocaust in any way of that kind should be automatically banned and this is not something that be very difficult for a very for to be able to do with ai it just requires putting the effort in to make sure its done i mean amazon cares about 2 things it wants the Largest Selection of products possible and who are the ones to make sure the products get delivered on time using amazon prime or other systems and what they need to do is be much more selective in the things that they carry and therefore they wont have this problem i think. It seems like a fairly old vs but if we look at the ethical situation here people say its disrespectful its just outright wrong that people should be allowed the chance to buy items such as this but should they be allowed i mean from a legal aspect should they be allowed the option. Ok lets talk about 2 things in terms of legal option were talking about free speech but amazon is not the government only the government has to require free speech and of course the free speech is the United States issue is a little bit different in other countries so yes the government can say that you cant have something thats makes fun of the holocaust however amazon is a private company a private company does not have to abide by the 1st amendment it can only allow things on its platform that it thinks is appropriate i mean they dont sell items of nudity for instance on the amazon platform that would be inappropriate for that from their standards so again this could be part of a question of what the standards and whats know that you can have anything about the holocaust being sold obviously a books about the holocaust its very appropriate it may have photographs you have videos and all sorts of things that are appropriate to sell about the holocaust however putting it on a Christmas Tree is a decoration thats clearly inappropriate and again. Has the ability to block those things and it has the moral right to do so and you know we give these pleas tech platforms so much power they have to have the power to to enforce standards and decency what society requires also and i think thats very important again they didnt theyre not the 1st amendment they dont have to keep by the 1st amendment they dont have to allow free speech on their platform they are a private company they can sell what they wish to on a friday as a private company and if they start selling things that are inappropriate we as citizens can all say well were not going to buy from amazon anymore were going to buy from walmart of one of their competitors and thats what that what they want to see happen so they must spend the effort time and money to make sure that the things that are sold on their platform are appropriate. Request them some you know small percent of their profits in order to do that but they certainly have the technical ability to do so all they have to have is the will to do so it should not require people complaining before they remove a product like this they should be able to scan for it or to magically and never allowed it to be on sale at this early stage do you think this incident has done any damage to the image of the company and. No probably not there are so many different stories about amazon and so many different issues i think its just one more cup you know all the Tech Companies are taking their lumps at this point obviously and in different ways and i think this is just a little lump in terms of amazon i dont think will make any long term difference to their growth or to the way people see amazon again they they dealt with it appropriately and the fact they did take it down if they would have not taken it down then i think would have had a much deeper impact on them theyve taken it down the question though is where what do they do Going Forward and that has to do that with tech platforms and all these issues of what the responsibility of tech platforms ought to fake items you know this whole issue of fake speech all these things fake photographs fake videos these are all very difficult items very difficult issues but the platforms have to spend the time and effort in dealing with them because theyve become so powerful that we will not be able to tell the difference between fake and real very and its the responsibility of these platforms who promote these ideas remote these videos sell these products to take the lead in finding ways of making sure that whats real is real and making sure the products that are inappropriate dont get sold. Marc pleasure to speak to appreciate you coming on r. T. Mark shulman my guest newsweek columnist editor of history several dot com thank you. U. S. Journalist claims his friend and former boss Hillary Clinton distanced herself from him over his investigation of the now disgraced hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein. Its remarkable how quickly even people with a long relationship with you will turn if you threaten the centers of power or the sources of funding around them ultimately there are lots of people out there who operate in that way theyre beholden to powerful interests and if you go up against those interests you become radioactive very quickly. Only affair of their workers clintons special advisor for years including while she was secretary of state of the weinstein meanwhile donated tens of thousands of dollars to clintons 2016 dooms president ial campaign before the Sexual Assault scandal that unfolded ortiz storm of course a look at how Investigative Journalism in general is becoming harder in the age of big corporate media. Ali what often portrays investigative journalists as knights in shining armor risking it all to protect the truth is that legal what is it is that we do it for a living. We dont. Leave the country. I was doing my job you never want. Your gas tank here and we can tell this story were going to tell it right and reality though snooping around the lives of influential people could have serious repercussions it could land you in trouble even if were talking about hollywood royalty like ronan farrow he was essential to the new yorkers 2017 investigation into rape allegations against Harvey Weinstein the same one that received the Pulitzer Prize and through the me too movement into the mainstream before his journalism career farrow worked as a lawyer at one point serving under the then secretary of state Hillary Clinton as her advisor for global youth issues they made quite the team that is until farah began digging into weinsteins dirty laundry did you feel pressure from Hillary Clinton on and her staff raised concerns about the fact that i was working on this story about one of her most significant donors that they had bungler of hollywood money not to mention pharaohs original collaborator and b c refused to publish the weinstein revelations all together but this isnt even the only major story that the Mainstream Media big wigs have tried to smother a. B. C. Anchor amy roebuck recently went public about her investigation into geoffrey epsteins pedophile operation which was killed by the network 3 years ago it was unbelievable what we had we had everything. And i tried for 3 years to get it on to no avail and now its coming out and i think well of revelations what we had it was unreal there were going back to you know. Get it all years ago so is that it have the rich and powerful become so strong. That Investigative Journalism has no place in the 21st century you probably cant reach. You know 1020000000 people with investigative stories that really attack it wealthy and powerful when you do Investigative Journalism which i do for a career in a living and you bump up against the rich and powerful especially if if your publisher is friendly with those who are rich and powerful you. You know you pay a price you either are taken off the beat and given Something Else to do like write a bit you areas or you are you know in the worst case youre fired. Or youre sort of let know that you know your career is not going anywhere there so you should look elsewhere. Ok i appreciate you staying with this hey this is all to international.
