Parties in the United States have decided that the social media giants out of Silicon Valley are playing far far far too big of a role in influencing politics but my friends is that really the case and speaking of politics social media and amending change this week n. F. L. Quarterback collin capper nick recognized the 3rd anniversary of his now historic act of protest by taking a need during the playing of the National Anthem during the n. F. L. Games capper nick tweeted today marks the 33 Year Anniversary of the 1st time i protested systemic oppression i continue to work and fan with the people in our fight for liberation despite those who are trying to a race the movement the movement has always lived with the people so today lets discuss the influence of social media in our politics and the 3rd anniversary of taking in the as we start watching the homes. You want to hear what. The bank. Its. Like you know that i got. Was that we. Would. Welcome one and all the watching the hawks i am and i robot are and today we once again with dialogue over debate about the wallace and myself bring you 2 distinct and informative discussion discussions between a variety of topics and guests with unique political viewpoints starting my very own perception and perspective. And joining me today to bring their perception of perspective along with my own is the founder of truth in media journal of Friends Community activists in washington d. C. Advisory neighborhood commissioner one perry red and our to america producer brant board thank all 3 of you for coming on i want to start with the accusations being leveled at the Major Social Media Companies of political bias by the republicans they held this summit i want to ask you do you feel and ill start with you bret do you feel that there is a conservative there is a bias against conservative viewpoints social media and websites by of those who run these social media sites look i mean if youre going to say that the folks are probably not lefties that thats probably a stretch because they are however a lot of these people who are being banned from social media on the conservative side or the likes of laura loom or who just throw out racist and just flat out wrong conspiracy laden things and so thats why theyre getting banned so i dont necessarily think theres a specific bias against right wing people on social media i think that there are a lot more open outspoken people who are so. Saying things that are socially acceptable anymore say anymore unfortunately with simply acceptable and so thats why theyre seeing them being blocked but i think if you see people on the left kind of a spouse saying violence or or just hatred in a way against somebody is race religion or anything else theyre probably also going to face the same backlash but i want to want to throw over there do you do you do you feel that theres a gee are we seeing a censorship through google and other such sites against you know conservatives conservative activists things like. Yeah i definitely think there is but here is what i think is the misnomer i think a lot of conservatives think theyre the only ones this is happening to and thats where theyre wrong its anyone whos anti establishment on the left or on the right but its much sneakier than an outright ban so brant is right when he says you know that the people who are being outright banned are the ones who have to be easy targets the alex jones the lower limb are those are people are easy to ban because they dont really have a sympathetic ear out there but its not the banning that is the problem it is the shadow banning it is the algorithms that steer people away from content it is the attempts that have been they even like with someone like its also gathered by who you mentioned in your lead up here who google has suddenly has a problem where they can run her ads where twitter it just came out was posting articles about her that were 8 months old that were negative that was the number one thing on her twitter search when everyone else every other candidate for president on the democratic side is getting up to the minute whatever the news articles are so there are algorithms in place that make no mistake are intentionally taking attention away from non mainstream sources on both the left and the right Green Party Libertarians those are the people who are being severely impacted by this and what do they have in common they are anti establishment antiwar and theyre against the way that things are currently set up right now perry you know youre youre in that you know as a as a theres been a candidate in your view been an activist i mean juju feel about kind of censorship on social media to the bench describing for those people who are you know not your mainstream candidates not your main with the mainstream political message from our experience activists have have made this cry for years far as conservatives crying that you know theyre the ones its one intellectual term that out and used to describe conservatives. Where they are always plan to eat. It is like they are the only ones now watch this our organization suffer from the i. R. S. Over scrutinizing when the tea party the Southern California tea party they complained about being being scrutinized for 9 months by the i. R. S. And they soon well we joined that lawsuit and even we won we received a settlement from the lawsuit from the i. R. S. We were scrutinized for years a crowd about 9 months we were scrutinized before years put in a dorm oil hold stands so conservative they elevate things into reminds me of White Privilege in this country because what his wife close is a problem is that everyone knows and thats how conservatives are conducting their their campaign then what point out the algorithms man if thats not the truth you can have you can have your your your your your your your issue whatever the case may be in google will drop it down to page 8 so you know and its problematic facebook for example the friends used to have you dont have any more where to go facebook you know its interesting i can i just say i mean of course about that too but i think its important you have to separate a and untrue paradigm right media wants you to believe that we live in a left right world there are people only on the right and only on the left and everyone in america and everyone around the world is divided into those camps and thats not true people really across the board are crossing over into many different camps and so what perry said about activists the Number One Group that is being targeted by these algorithms are activists right left wherever you want to fall in the paradigm if youre a person who wants to take action google wants to hype well and i was going to say im sorry to type on that point i think if you look at it from a business perspective im not here to defend Facebook Google wherever they may be but if youre looking at it on a business perspective they also dont want to be seen on the outside so these companies themselves. Maybe its not a political move on their part to say oh we want to make sure its a left right paradigm but more so theyre saying we dont want facebook we dont want google to be seen as this outsider group this outsider web site this web site for activists this web site for green party or this web site for whatever because then they go well were not for everybody now because this country is so far into that left right paradigm and thats the sad case because i think a lot of the great activism on the my father would have been able to become governor if it wasnt for his use of social media when he was one of the 1st to do with and you know i think thats one of the sad things is that youre going to lose out on getting really solid strong grassroots candidates coming up who can use those rigs as a benefit we talk a lot about the ills of social media but also the benefit is it does get voices out into the public gets them gets them and speaking of being heard i want to move to the 3rd anniversary calling cap an expro test i want you to take a look at this small clip of this 3 minute video that he released today on his twitter take a look. The stand wasnt for me this is because im seeing things happening to people that dont have a voice when its a bad name its a need for much more lets go back to knelt instead of standing there in the National Anthem at last nights game is expect once again just 20 says more socially just to africanamericans i received. This platform to be so many people he took me for and people see a small piece of the 3 minute video that he put out you know and it featured a lot of the parents and the supporters of a lot of the young black men and women whove been killed over the years by Police Violence and things about nature i want to ask you all start with you perry is has has that systemic oppression that copper next been fighting why he took that need have we seen a change or effect from not only his protests but when you look at the entirety of the black lives have we seen enough of a change as the needle moved a little bit oh absolutely not but what we have seen is an elevation of those issues and theyre all on the on the tip of tongues of americans all over the country whether appalachia well whether on wall street and so from the occupy movement to calling cap and this is this resistance to a systemic injustice and inequality was necessary i know im thankful and i have a grandson whos about to enter one a football. One a football and and. Calling captain nick being the sacrificial lamb was so very important and i hate where we are today is the n. F. L. And its only just move thats interesting to you brett ben i ask you you know weve recently seen the n. F. L. Now kind of cozying up with jay z. And that kind of a deal a hey look we moved even jay z. Said oh look weve moved on and said were going from taken to mean now and move forward do you guys feel thats thats accurate i mean it was. The 1st billionaire in hip hop music correct or i mean im not saying that he isnt and he doesnt speak for the people or anything but a bunch of billionaires accepting another billionaire i dont know if that really means that theyre ready to change and look calm capper nick made a huge statement with what he did and he paid the price for the loss i mean you know if youve lost his career hes obviously been able to go out there and make change but hes not playing football anymore and i think thats something that he should wear more as a badge of honor to then coming out there and saying oh you know what they dont want me to play because of this the should take that as a hey you know what im not playing in the league because i stood up for what i stand for and how many of you guys can say that on that note i got to say i dont regret been. Told they agree with that you know but there are a lot of activists out there who have sacrificed a lot more than some like government can still makes millions to nike who have sacrificed a lot and they are really Unsung Heroes of this absolutely could point to all right ben swan i want to thank you so much for coming on perry road always a pleasure bridgework thank you all 3 of you for bringing your ideas and thoughts to this program always a pleasure all right as we go to break watchers dont forget to let us know what you think of the topics weve covered on the social media be sure to check out watching the hawks the podcast now theyll be on spotify apple juice and everywhere you listen the podcast coming up my fantastic cohost have awhile it opens up a gallery a big media has been scanned and they Weight Watchers. There are some people because of what they have given up their rights. Somebodys been proven. True and how many more. Before we. Realize that this is not working and we actually do something about. The over here they. Go. These days most political panels on cable news seem more Like Group Therapy sessions than experts and journalists conferring on news reporting and you think you think this is a new phenomenon in the world of try. Youd be very very wrong you can even blame it on obama way back in 2010 in a piece for p. B. S. Media shift Scott Rosenberg wrote journalists typically and rightly see themselves as bearers of public accountability holding the feet of government officials Business Leaders and other public figures to the fire of their inquiries yet remarkably a surprisingly small surprising number of journalists still find it hard to accept being held to account themselves this week proved that after almost a decade these words were written the problem has only gotten worse the New York Times deputy washington editor Jonathan Weisman was demoted this week after he was criticized for his reaction to criticism of his tweet calling the justice democrats for as he put it seeking to unseat an africanamerican democrat the opponent in question is also africanamerican which of course led many online to discuss the issue and express their opinion on it one of those people was New York Times best selling author roxanne gay who received numerous emails from Jonathan Weisman one which stated i believe you owe me an enormous apology and if you would hear me out i think you would agree also this week c. N. N. Anchor and definitely not a godfather character chris cuomo was caught on film threatening to throw a man down a set of stairs because he jokingly called him fredo after the godfather character this is an aberration that was one can see tweets over the years from cuomo to random practically anonymous twitter users like this one in which he wrote maybe you were hit with a rock that made you confuse facts. Has the email journalists replace the Walter Cronkites of the world who held back 30 years in rage in order to be a sense of strength for readers and viewers in other news Weight Watchers now known as w w released crowborough a weight loss app for children thats right now your young son or daughter can get a jump start on their body dysmorphic disorder for as low as 12. 00 a week are we over protecting the adults while forcing kids to grow up too fast well lets find out and step into the gallery. Right. Thank you. Joining me this week in the gallery are artsy america correspondent rachel flovent and host of boom bust christie i thank you so much for joining me today joining me today. So i guess the 1st New York Times editor Jonathan Weisman he sort of initially got trouble because of the doubling down it wasnt even that he just posted something silly which he does a lot of just bad takes in general he gets attention for it he sort of doubles down and he is theory that he was doubling down on with saying this opponent being africanamerican was a problem is that he said that p. P. Was essentially saying people of color dont represent people in cities. Like cities in the midwest or in the south and all of this. Ok its not racist but is it not kind of racist adjacent to sit there and say these things to bring up this and is absolutely completely like i feel like he even if you was thinking that that should have been that shouldnt have been something that he should just put on twitter i think actually lead by example and everest and trump started putting all of his policies on twitter every single other person thought that oh its appropriate to put our personal thoughts and opinions when they actually should be accountable to a higher standard the president of the United States should not be on twitter putting out official policies like doing tears and all those things those should be done through like their p. R. Team like p. R. Exists for a reason because they know how to handle messaging twitter doesnt really do that doesnt allow for that so i think like ever since then everybody thought hey we can express whatever we want were when in this case people should be can help to kyra standard people should be accountable for what they say and i think especially in the world of journalism you look at it from the standard you are wanting the public to trust youre wanting them to think that what youre reporting is accurate and its factual but if youre coming on there and youre giving not only your opinion but youre actually pointing them in a way that is harmful to other people or in this case hes pointing them towards one candidate in a way from another that really stands out and thats something that weve got to watch out in addition to the fact that its on twitter i mean i remember when i was in college my professor specifically said watch where you put on social media because your future employers are looking at that theyre not just looking at your resume theyre going im looking at your twitter account but now were in an age where someone who is an editor at the New York Times you may think that hes above that but in this sense it will be interesting to see exactly what happens to him because that is the ning a very dangerous message in these these 2 people who are very i mean even in the video with chris cuomo he sits there and says like on c. N. N. Anchor. I find it a bit amusing i have to say that i keep hearing about you know. C. N. N. Anchors are fox news anchors or are these people that are getting accosted in restaurants and being told how horrible they are and i dont know ive worked for 2 years when i only have people come out to me and say thank you so when i saw that it was really part of it its like maybe your message is really not that people dont trust people and have that because they do i dont have people coming up to me in restaurants or any of that its its when people do Say Something to me its like hey love your show hey watch your network you think part of it is like maybe people dont like you and your message very much and i think it also has to do one was ego for a big portion of it because its like if someone calls you for it you might not like it but that doesnt mean you have to have an outburst about it but generally on the flip side of that even if you do have an outburst over it like youre human you made a mistake and i feel like the entire thing is actually blown entirely out of a portion like people get angry he is human he was with his family and everything so it was an inappropriate time for someone to try to get him riled up so i think theres 2 sides of the story and i think the media just shows him as like a fool and he he should she should not have done Something Like this when in reality hes like a pot and he made a mistake he should have said that it should be true neutralized not that big of a deal i think its crazy how quickly it was trending on twitter i mean i saw the video and just kind of scrolled past and thought oh thats interesting not really something i would share but then all of a sudden its the number one trending topic on twitter and there were a lot of people questioning the validity of and wondering ok wait a 2nd why is this getting pushed to the forefront when reality is something some people might watch but its not exactly something that the entire world is going to be talking about more so than anything else on twitter and i think thats the thing its the personality is. That are your big. Egos its because there are brands the anderson coopers the Tucker Carlsons their brand and that becomes you have to do that i want to take now to move on to curb the sound to life will curb go as a curb your way cravings. For children ok so one of the Things Unknown is according to data from the National Eating Disorders Association it says the best known environmental contributor to the development of eating disorders is the Socio Cultural ideation idealization of cygnus and also 79 percent of Weight Loss Program participants reported coping with weight stigma by eating more food and here we are with Weight Watchers sorry w. W. Rebranded it. With their app which looks like every other eating program it looks like deal a meal its like heres theres green food for the elephant and red foods and log everything and become obsessed and take away yourself and take pictures. You know i like a lot of people have had issues with eating disorders all of that stuff that stuff starts at a pretty impressionable age and when i was looking through the web page of curb i found one that was an 8 Year Old Girl celebrating that she had dropped her b. M. I. Her body mass index by 11 points and she had so much more energy shes 8 how am i just being too sensitive and my being grazie i dont have kids i dont is this weird it is weird but i think the focus is wrong the focus should be on the idea of the ideal of the having the perfect body like everybody is obsessed with that social media kind of trends that like you have all these filters you have apps to make people thinner than they actually are real life and people look at these images on instagram kids are very impressionable and they look at and theyre like i should be like that like i feel like that is the actual problem the Weight Watchers app program i feel like theyre targeting the targeting in the messaging wrong like kids should not be trying to lose weight they should be encouraged to have a healthy diet because on the flip side is that america does have an obesity problem like that is a fact like americas number one in terms of obesity and obesity can be countered from a very young age so kids should be taught to have a healthy diet one that doesnt lead to any other eating disorders carry with i completely and i also think if youre. Looking at an 8 year old if they are truly overweight a lot of that is on the parents i mean what good is a parent giving them its not like the 8 year old is just walking to the store and deciding exactly what theyre getting its on the parents to really look at their diet and what its including and they also have to realize that kids Pay Attention to a lot of what parents say so if you have a parent coming and going oh you need to lose weight you need to do this thats going to give them a terrible body image thats going to last for the rest of their lives whereas if the parent looks at the numbers and then comes in and says hey lets add some more fruits and vegetables my daughter that kind of thing and makes it a positive thing then theyre going to help the child go for a company to now come out and say oh we need this app to teach your kids how to lose weight and then theyre you know pushing 8 year olds with that does send a very dangerous message and could end up sending a lot of customers away from Weight Watchers or w w because they dont want to be a part of that and they dont want to contribute their money to the i want to say this are absolute we have about a minute left and i want to say our absolute curva just a sign of the times where actual Proper Health care from a doctor is not available because in a in a world with health care if your child is having obesity problems or anything you go to your doctor and they would say hey you know what you need more this more lets focus on these sayings fruits vegetables that kind of stuff nutrition is that is that a sign of the times that people cant even we have to do everything through an app because we dont we cant afford to go to a doctor pretty much like the app is just simply a tool and going on what you just said like it the responsibility should fall on to the parent the responsibility should be followed to the doctor to actually like maintain a health the app is mainly a 20 cant really blame an app for problems that in my create are not. Absolutely and i can see how they may think oh maybe if we make an outfit will make it fun for kids and that kind of thing and they can look at their green foods and Different Things that theyre eating but i think overall thats especially something theyve got to look at the relationship portion of it and the plays into it especially for Young Children theres a lot to happen there thank you so much that we got there a lot well see you guys all back here next. Thank you so much r. T. Why a paradise with some ground turned into a round the experimentation field for agricultural chemicals we know that these chemicals have consequences they are major irritants theres no question otherwise why would the Chemical Company workers themselves be geared up that suited up locals attempt to combat the on regulated experiments that often in day you have many of these people one foot into the biotech pharma and the other foot in the government regulatory bodies this kind of collusion is reprehensible while the battle goes on the chemicals continue to poison hawaii and its people so one has to ask the question whether there is a form of Environmental Research going on in hawaii whether these Companies Feel they can get away with this because the people have less political power.
