As the bubble burst one hundred percent its burst and it burst a lot bigger fashion and a lot quicker than some people had anticipated and we saw the dow down eight hundred points between a week ago and monday and then another eleven thirty two or ten thirty two rather on on thursday and markets have not settled yet so well see where they go but definitely some of the air has been let out of this bubble is just speculation holland heres what the market has done in the past year everything except what you see on the extreme right is what President Trump was boasting about in the state of the Union Address objectively he was jumping in front of the parade as the two year chart demonstrates a trend already in motion and the past week has obviously been a wild ride dollar cost averaging is described as buying a fixed dollar amount of a particular investment on a regular schedule regardless of the share price. For most. Investors is this still a sound strategy it is and i want to talk about it but answer your question holland but just to take a half a step back president s have not that much to do with markets they often take credit for them as President Trump has but by and large unless they do something and the tax package is a good example markets are driven by the underlying economics so ive heard people say this was president obamas fault because it was cheap money and its a trump tumble by some ditzy democrats so the bottom line is its really about the underlying fundamentals markets will go up the go down but you look at the economy and thats also what i think investors to your point should be looking at when they put their money someplace gone are the days when you used to buy and hold when i was a teenager my my father gave me sort of as a. Task to try and look at stocks he gave me a couple of shares of microsoft and his advice was pretty similar to i think what many parents would have told their youngsters and he would say sunny boy girl ysu let me explain investing to you as a stockholder when you get older youll recall this chat about stock this and stock that you remember that i said with a grin that the shares of i dont know a t. N. T. Microsoft or something akin theyll be worth something then so were going to hold on to these bad boys and some day when then arise well be rich itll change our lives thats how wealth derives thats change buying and holding is not how investors should continue to invest they need to constantly be re calibrating their portfolios based upon their own risk tolerances they need to read up on the portfolios they need to know about transaction fees and they need to ensure that they are comfortable with losing things rather than just assuming theyre going to make money well the ledge is getting pretty crowded this week Glass Half Full version is theres got. A p some bargains out there well people say buy the dip but when do you know is a dip done and you know my guess is theres still a little bit more hollow and weve talked off the air about a correction which is seen as ten percent in a market and a bear market would be twenty percent well were a little more than the ten percent i dont think going to get down to the bear market but whether or not were at the bottom of that dip and now is a good time to buy im not sure but investors generally need to have a longer view about these things and not just because up in the daily mess but if theyre concerned now if your viewers are saying oh my gosh whats going to happen over happen over the weekend my thought is you probably have too much invested in the market wow well to quote one of the worlds richest men and most watched investors Warren Buffett be fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful and you said something to me when we spoke recently by what you know i got about thirty seconds explain what you mean by things that you feel comfortable with and you have to million already with average mom and pop investors should not be out there figuring out all the machinations of the machinations of individual stock pick one if its starbucks if its t. Mobile if its like these ties theyre really good ties invest in those Things Research those things that you know and love and feel comfortable its i think pretty good advice its worked for me dont squint to charge youre not going to beat the pros at the not never going to beat the pros never going to be those High Frequency trading cheetahs that are in and out of markets in milliseconds trying to scoop up micro dollars stick with what you know and bitcoin. Stick with what you know. You commissioner bart chilton host of boom bust here on r. T. America. In the one nine hundred thirty s. When jewish academics were being dismissed from teaching positions in germany and austria some came to the United States looking for work but jobs were scarce during the depression here africanamericans were persecuted what became known as the historically black colleges and universities and ruled students unwelcome at predominantly white schools and those jewish professors found the black College Environment comfortable and accepting in eight hundred thirty eight historically white Georgetown University sold two hundred seventy two slaves to pay the universitys debts for which georgetown formally apologized last year to their descendants among them our next guest now the director of special projects at the new Orleans City Council sandra green thomas welcome good evening its a pleasure to be here again how did it feel to be in that room that day at georgetown. You know i felt a tremendous amount of responsibility when i stood up at the podium and began to speak you know i knew it was an important opportunity for me to talk about the dissent and to talk about our ancestors and to convey to georgetown. How we feel and what our expectations are for reconciliation and for moving forward. I tried to give a speech that was personal and yet universal and i think it was well received and i hope i was able to live up to the expectations of everyone in the room i just felt a tremendous amount of missed the sponsibility on my shoulders your work there today in new orleans demonstrates that theres more to education than going to college with Police Brutality is such an issue i am struck by the concept behind your know your rights seminars tell us about that program. Well. Im lucky enough to serve under a Council Member nady in ramsey she partnered up our office partnered with the independent Police Monitor which is headed by susan hutson and her office and what we did do rather is we host seminars in which we teach young people about not only their rights but also their responsibilities when they have an interaction with Law Enforcement. We teach them of course that you know they have the right to a safe respectful and legal interactions with Law Enforcement but they also have some responsibilities too and if they live up to these responsibilities then it will deescalate or prevent escalations in situations you know we teach them that of course you identify yourself you comply with requests but you also have the responsibility of person know in your rights and protecting your Rights Technology is where the jobs will be what kinds of things are you doing there in new orleans to enable young people with the skills that are and will be in demand. Well the council is the legislative body of City Government and our Council Member in office you know she sees the best way really to support young people in families is through lead legislation so with legislation she was able to establish the citys first Youth Services and Empowerment Committee and within that committee she was able to get funding one hundred thousand dollars for Tech Training were partnering partnering with the local high schools and also with dr Calvin Mackey from stem nola and theyre creating a program where they take High School Seniors theyre going to give them Tech Training about the time they graduate and complete the program they will have a plus certification and. That will enable them to get tech jobs that are paying a better than living wage in fact d. X. C. Technologies has announced they announced in november that theyre coming to the city with over two thousand jobs and the jobs are going to start the entry level pay is sixty three thousand dollars and thats a tremendous amount of money for someone in young person in new orleans to be making and you know and were positioning these children to have success to be able to have a decent life to have a family to be able to support the family and raise children that will be able to be productive you citizens as well very impressive with every citys budget now under the microscope what can a city like yours do to support at risk kids and vulnerable families. Well you know i think my Council Member and our office that were doing a lot i mean we have a great presence at the local high schools the students the faculty and the parents feel supported by us we host Youth Empowerment days where we bring in mentors from all walks of life and professions. To come in to talk to the kids i mean really in a one on one setting and to advise them we you know we seek to move the focus from criminal Justice Policy youth policy from criminal justice to mentoring Health Services social Services Education and jobs and these empowerment days are also theyre not only mentoring but we also they also function as job fairs you know we have a very large Hospitality Industry and the Council District which i serve covers the French Quarter bywater and marinating and trim a which are where a lot of that activity goes on and we try to partner them with a Business Owners and get them entry level jobs in apprenticeships you know training them for the future well congratulations on all of the above and thank you sandra green thomas new Orleans City Council director of special projects. Thank you. Next week are black History Month salute to unsung medical miracle workers meantime after a short break stop hey whats that sound is Attention Span now oxymoron this is the big picture on our t. America. Its all t. We have a great team but we need to strengthen before the free world cold and your bets have been a legend to keep it so its at the back. In one thousand nine hundred two that must qualify for the european championships at the very last moment no one believed in us but we won and im hoping to bring some of that waiting spirit to the r. C. C. Recently ive had a lot of practice so i can guarantee you that Peter Schmeichel will be on the best fall since my last will come on that story three. Thousand zero zero zero zero hitter here i called russia. Dry. Left left left more left ok stuff thats really good. The every day information torrent can be overwhelming anyone can broadcast anything instantly online what to believe and how to cope with the every day info overload lets ask dr jean aloud and whom you know as a political pundit here and on the other cable news channels but tonight shes wearing her other hat her day job psychologist and news Media Consultant jim farley was both an a. B. C. And n. B. C. News executive and he and i are radio brothers we both managed washingtons top rated all news Radio Station w t o p the ultimate dashboard appliance so jim and i became accustomed to competing for mentally multitasking motorists attention thank you both for being here nice to hear you jim Media Consumption competition is fierce but i love that sign you hung in the newsroom at w t o p get it right then get it first now without editors or filters those feeding social media contribute lots of what we now call fake news how can the consumer know what to believe. A consumer simply has to develop a good healthy b. S. Meter and theres a fair amount of teaching we need to do to help them do it. We need to try to show them the difference between an Actual News Organization that has gatekeepers people like editors or Fact Checkers will say are you sure do you have a second source and by the way to tweet as not to sources. And the media itself has a job to do in reste or in its trust really lost trust when it totally blew the twenty sixteen election cycle yeah agenda are you uncomfortable with all these stories full of unnamed sources. Very uncomfortable theres no good reason for a lot of them to be named sources its just too easy for a journalist to do a story that way to persuade somebody to go on the record these sources could be cooked in the white house you know a white house source says that doesnt tell us anything or a source familiar with the topic that tells us nothing you know that our roads your credibility and i think one of the reasons that journalists are doing so many unnamed sources is that theyve moved from p. J. s proper journalistic skepticism to outright cynicism great quote from david broder is one of the most respected washington reporters he said cynicism is epidemic right now it saps peoples confidence in politics Public Officials and erodes both the standing and standards of journalism but wait for it he said this in the one nine hundred ninety s. Six president ial election cycles ago and its gotten more negative and more cynical ever since well and more partisan jeana news media play it straight less lately whatever one chooses to believe is validated by whichever news providers we choose are we now less curious about other points of view. We have become very tribal in our Media Consumption and i think that its very unhealthy for a myriad of reasons that the political reasons are right there as well but i think it causes a lot of stress and anxiety to the average person to be so angry all the time at anyone who disagrees with you and to be so intolerant as many have become to those who might have a different opinion than you i think one of the most reckless and you and ive talked about this on your show before holland but i think one of the most reckless things we can do is say you know we should never discuss politics or religion quite the contrary we should be able to be adults and engage in civil discourse and to disagree and friendly ways as you and i often do and its still be good friends or still claim to be relatives or whatever that is but weve really lost that civility in our culture and i think its very sad and i think that the mass amounts of media coming at us like a firehose are a big part of the problem because you cant Read Everything right so what people tend to do is to gravitate toward what they already believe and in psychology we call it cognitive dissonance and its putting the information that you gain into a file that you already have and where you come into conflict with your own brain is when you have new information that doesnt fit in one of your files we should be it we should be creating new files every day holland and i dont think we are well out to that point jim gray the media since you left day to day management of news organizations what do you now see and hear and read with fresh eyes and ears meaning the forest that you might not have noticed when you were there in the trees. Well i was definitely in the trees because i spent my entire career in the s. L. A corridor new york and washington i now live in florida and its very different. I like dr jean is word tribal in three different news organizations i was the news executive who would handle accusations of bias and what i came to find was that when there was an accusation it really meant that the message you were delivering was not comfortable to the strongly held opinions of the person complaining and thats why people who are conservative tend to go to fox news and liberal to m s n b c or c n n. They want something that reinforces what theyre thinking that tribal word is really good to describe what the media has made the audience now i really think theres a lot of media responsibility you speak to the quality gina what about the sheer quantity has all this stuff coming at us made us more susceptible to diversion and distraction you spoke about anxiety have we become a short Attention Span society. The bad news is that the answer to that is clearly i dont think if there is anyone out there that would disagree that that is the case but necessity is also the mother of invention as we know and so the fact that the news is coming at us in such a firehose manner it also does force us to look more skeptical more skeptically at the information we consume that can be a good thing because Critical Thinking i mean nobody wants an entire viewership our audience that isnt thinking for themselves so as we start to realize that we cant consume all the news coming out of us we have to become a little more skeptical perhaps a little more cynical yes and i hear that but the flip and better side of that is that we do have to think first and were not just believing everything that were hearing on the news i think back to when i was a little girl and there were basically three networks and thats where you got your news and that was the beginning and end of it so everybody just kind of believed everything that the news media said thats not the case anymore and i dont think thats all that so there is an upside here youre right uncle walter said thats the way it was and he was trusted when he was trusted yeah go ahead jolly lets take a look at where the news is coming from weve lost over two hundred thousand journalism jobs in cities and towns theres been a net gain in digital news jobs but where are they theyre not in hiawatha kansas theyre in new york washington or the pacific crescent so arent the Major National news media including the new Digital Media live either in the excel a corridor or the pacific crescent its a coastal bubble and its a liberal bubble and i think that local news well covered is all the more conspicuous but youre right the firings have really clobbered a lot of the depth and perspective jim has President Trumps outspoken disdain for unfavorable coverage and Rush Limbaugh characterizing legacy publishers as drive by media cause people to be skeptical about institutional news providers. I think it certainly hasnt helped journalism but the cynicism the skepticism on the part of the audience for what the news messages been started long before there was a fox news its not new a lot of this is the perception and you can find polls going back twenty thirty years that people think that there is a bias in the media and just fed into that and limbaugh feeds into it gina. Just enough time to voice a real pet peeve and i think you and i may have talked about this off the air i find instant messages annoying because they make my phone beep their interrupt of unless its urgent i prefer people email me but in todays instant gratification hundred forty character culture our social graces suffering and will manners be all the more conspicuous so thats a great point and thats another case holland where you so eloquently described that theres an upside and downside to most of the ways media is changing look media is going to change theres nothing we can do about that people are going to communicate and you know zero time its all going to theyre going to expect turn around on a dime so theres nothing we can do about that but the good news about that is that we can get more information quickly we can study up on a topic you know where you have to go to a library and dig through a card catalogue know how we can get that information in zero time and so so theres a good site to refer to try to look at that well since the doctor is in lets all just jump on the couch for a second via have any professional advice for unplugged and distressing. I never did unplug so if i did id have to take my own advice im not good at it i love the challenge of the day to day i love the news cycle but here is my challenge to your audience holiday that is try at least spend five minutes a day or five percent of your News Consumption listening to somebody that disagrees with you rather than constantly listening to the yes men out there the curious jim i got about a minute left experience what is your advice to your clients the news organizations that you consult about conveying their credibility to the audience how do they say believe us theyve got to be relevant and theyve got to be good storytellers its got to be relevant to the audience they dont want to listen to angry guys arguing they want to hear whats important in their own lives whats going to save the money what good things are happening in their schools are their family safe or their Community Safe this is the kind of thing people care about and im sure hoping that they can fix the Business Model for local news organizations newspapers radio and television because thats where we can get a return to a decent believable journalism with credibility local is conspicuous so Warren Buffett has been buying up all those small newspapers because of High School Sports its a real franchise hey thank you dr gene allowed and jim farley and folks to bear in mind what youve heard here and be a careful news consumer thank you folks. Thats all and tonight the winter Olympic Games are underway in rigid south korea where things are at least a little warmer as athletes from north and south korea compete together that still big picture if you missed any part of this weeks show or if youd like to share it hit youtube dot com slash the big picture r t where you can find all our shows and you can watch them anywhere any time on any device im at holland cook on twitter and if you follow me ill follow you until next week question more. The Second World War was a human tragedy that left millions dead or injured. But who ever wonders how life may have continued for the victims. Victor took out and volunteered for the front and was captured by the nazis he survived seventeen concentration camps and could barely move when he was eventually freed.
