There is no crosswalk or traffic light in the area of the highway that Martinez was crossing.
An ambulance took him to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick with multiple broken bones and internal injuries, police said.
The roadway’s northbound lanes were closed for three hours Sunday night while authorities investigated the incident.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation, officials said.
