Rio Tinto has promoted its chief financial officer Jakob Stausholm to be its next chief executive, resisting pressure to appoint an Australian citizen as part of efforts to boost its engagement with the nation that provides the majority of its earnings.

A Danish citizen who stands almost two metres tall, Mr Stausholm said regaining the trust of traditional owners in Australia’s iron ore heartland would be one of his “key priorities” when he officially replaces Jean-Sebastien Jacques on January 1.
Mr Jacques tenure was cut short by this year’s Juukan Gorge scandal, where prized cultural heritage was destroyed to the dismay of the Puutu Kunti Kurrama and Pinikura (PKKP) traditional owners.
