Computers are being taught to spot the egg pods of spotted lanternflies on vehicles, trains and cargo containers by researchers at the Academy of Natural Science and Drexel University in Philadelphia.
Those are some of the primary vectors for spreading lanternflies. They also present areas that are difficult to inspect for the insect’s eggs.
Spotted lanternflies, which are native to Asia, were first found in Berks County in 2014 and have since led to quarantine for 26 counties in Pennsylvania. Record numbers of reports have been received by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture this year.
