Coral reefs are in danger. Experts say corals are facing a number of threats, from change in climate to diseases. But there's a group of scientists in West Palm Beach hoping to teach future generations the value of the Florida ecosystem. WPBF was invited inside for an exclusive look at one of Mother Nature's miracles that not a lot of people get to see. Inside the Reef Institute is an intimate research lab. Executive Director Leneita Fix said most of the corals inside their aquariums were rescued from Port Everglades and Fisher Island just off the coast of Miami. Their DNA will be preserved at the lab. Their hopes is to return the offspring to the ocean. "We are the only facility holding this species of coral. It's called Favia Fragum — looks like little golf balls," Fix said. This is the first time "Coral Spawning" has been witnessed outside the ocean during the Florida Coral Rescue Project. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Florida has 2% of the living coral in the United States. The state's coral reef stretches about 365 miles from Dry Tortugas National Park west of the Florida Keys to the St. Lucie inlet in Martin County. Also, along the coast are some of the most sought-after beaches, But some scientists, like Dr. Charles Gregory, said a very common product used by beachgoers is killing the coral. Dr. Gregory teaches future scientists about marine life, like in the waters surrounding Peanut Island. "We got a lot of people wearing toxic sunscreen over coral reef. That reef is diminished at an alarming rate," Gregory said.A study from NOAA's coral reef conservation program and a team of international scientists showed oxybenzone, a chemical found in over 3,500 sunscreen products, can damage juvenile corals.Researchers suggest a 100% mineral sunscreen. The reef institute says it's everyone's responsibility to protect coral reefs."If you love the manatee, if you love the turtle, if you love the stingray — if you get rid of this, their ecosystem is blown up in some way," Fix said.
