Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, December 21) — Rescue operations at a collapsed mining pit in Toledo City won't begin until Tuesday morning, according to local authorities.
John Rosello, Toledo City's public information officer, said in a telephone interview that authorities have already positioned the equipment needed for search and rescue efforts, but the operations will only start at 6 am of Tuesday since the site is still unstable and dangerous for rescuers.
In a statement, Carmen Copper Corporation, the company behind mining activities in the area, confirmed the incident occurred at its Carmen pit at around 4:15 pm on Monday. It said "incessant rains for the past several months and aggravated by Typhoon Vicky which hit parts of the Visayas" caused the collapse.
