It has been 50 years since the Great Blizzard of ’71 swept into southwestern Ontario and paralyzed the region for three days.
Thousands were stranded for days at home, work and school without heat or hydro. The Great Blizzard of ’71 has become the gauge by which every other storm has been compared by Huron County residents.

As forecasted, the storm blew in from the east on a 30-50 mph wind at about 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 28, 1971. Yet despite the expectation of the storm’s imminent arrival and the rapid drop in barometric pressure, schools and motorists were caught completely off guard.
