Read it for yourself: HR-1 is 'For The People' indeed!
Bobby L. Mays
Recently, I read the “opinion” piece of Perry O. Hooper in which he callously, and mistakenly, referred to HR-1 as a disaster. Sometimes, in determining exactly what something is, it helps to compare it to something else. Let us make some comparisons now.
Hooper claims that “The Democrats completely disregard the Constitution in this power play in the form of so-called election reform.” Not true. The 14th Amendment to the US Constitution granted citizenship to all persons… in the US, including former enslaved people, and guaranteed equal protection of the laws. This Amendment also authorizes the federal government to punish states that violate or abridge their citizens’ right to vote. Almost any reasonable person who can read will readily see that Alabama, Texas, Georgia and many other states are doing just that — now that the results of many elections of 2020 have withstood the baseless challenges alleging voter fraud and stolen elections.
