A group rallied Saturday afternoon outside the Maryland Department of Labor offices in Baltimore over issues with unemployment benefits.More than a year into the COVID-19 pandemic and many people who became jobless are still reporting problems with getting their unemployment payments. Many people across the state were put out of a job due to the pandemic. The People's Power Assembly, which organized the rally, said funds from unemployment and coronavirus relief act benefits are a right to taxpayers who lost their jobs due to the pandemic, saying some people are reporting slowed payments and others who said they haven't received any payments."We have filed a Freedom of Information Act request in the Maryland Department of Labor requesting how many current, unprocessed and unadjudicated claims there are. They have not been transparent about the number," said Andrew Mayton, a demonstrator."People need either jobs or income, and that that CARES Act money, that money belongs to us," said Sharon Black, with the People's Power Assembly. "That money and unemployment, nobody should feel ashamed. It was our hard-earned working hours that put money into the unemployment insurance program to begin with."The rally comes after 15,000 people filed for unemployment benefits last week in Maryland, which is up from the week before.
