PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – The race for the next Governor of Rhode Island is already kicking off after Secretary of State Nellie Gorbea announces her run for the 2022 election.
Gorbea was first elected into office in 2014 and has served as the Secretary of State for 6 and a half years. She joins the race as a Democrat and the first Latina in New England to run in a gubernatorial race.
She’s one of multiple candidates expected to run and the second to formally announce her stakes in the race. Dr. Luis Daniel Munoz, who ran as an independent in 2018, has also formally announced his candidacy as a Democrat.
