Javier Prado y Ugarteche nació en diciembre de 1871, hijo de Mariano Ignacio Prado, quien fue presidente durante la guerra con Chile, y doña Magdalena Ugarteche y Gutiérrez de Cossío. Entre sus hermanos figuran el expresidente Manuel Prado y Ugarteche, quien gobernó el Perú durante dos períodos, el empresario y académico Mariano Ignacio Prado y Ugarteche, fundador del Banco Popular; el diplomático y político Jorge Prado; y el héroe de la Guerra del Pacífico, coronel Leoncio Prado. Javier Prado fue un destacado político y un importante catedrático de la Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, que falleció de forma súbita el 25 de junio de 1921, a los 49 años.
